If this is how you reacted to the lyric version, you definitely should have done the video version, guys. It's a great video. A new take on an old classic, and a great take at that....
"You saw what happened, yet, within your silence, you did NOTHING." A US Army Captain addressing German citizens who lived outside a German Death Camp. One lesson is that we should never hesitate to speak out in the face of evil.
Paul Simon is a musical genius and wrote this masterpiece when he was just 21 years old.. It should be noted that “the sound of silence” is not a good thing. Rather it is indicative of people being unable to effectively communicate with each other, particularly on an emotional level. Yet the implication as presented is that these people are not cognizant that such an effect even exists. Or rather the reason “the sound of silence” is so strong is because people deem it to be more important than its aftereffect. And in that regard it has been theorized that Simon & Garfunkel are issuing a warning against the threat of mas mid-20th century social isolationism. In other words, a form of media which may have been deemed as propagating introversive behavior back in those days was the television. And as such, it is feasible that the “neon light” referred to in this song is in fact an allusion to a television set or something of the sort.
It is amazing how tones of the past continue to ring true in the now or future...interpreted in today's time, this could be about cancel culture or political correctness.
Simon & Garfunkel wrote this song as a warning to communication breakdown in society. The inability of human interaction and communication. Disturbed brought this song back to our ears and attention...not only to remind us of the lack of communication...but you can hear the anger and pleading in David Draiman's voice because the warning has gone ignored for nearly 60 years since the original version hit the airwaves. The addiction we have to our cell phones, to me, is a great example of the lines "people talking without speaking...people hearing without listening"....This song is an absolute masterpiece

David Draiman, the lead singer of all of Disturbed songs has an amazing vocal range. He was actually classically trained in his youth which explains his ability to hit the range from soft classical to heavy rock. He is an amazingly talented artist who doesn't get enough credit among first time listeners, especially if their only exposure to him is through "Down with the Sickness."
The best of all the Disturbed versions is the live performance they did on the Conan O'Brien show from 2016... That performance was nothing short of perfection and it was when David Draiman was sick with some flu or cold... You HAVE to react to that version too... Great reaction on this video too!

I grew up listening to this song by Simon & Garfunkel & have always loved it. I had a lot of their records. Many people have covered this song. Disturbed's version is a much darker take on this song. Peter Hollens & Tim Foust (from Home Free) do a great version of this song. Their voices complement each other perfectly & the layering of their voices is amazing. I hope you will check it out.
Listen and watch Simon and Garfunkle do this - they were the original composers and performers. As others have said, they did it as a possibility and Disturbed did it as a reality
I was a kid listening to and singing along with this song in the 60s when Simon and Garfunkel did it originally. I was driving home from work when I first heard the Disturbed cover on the radio. It gave me chills and I'm pretty sure my jaw was dropped by the end. Absolutely amazing cover and even better than the original, imo.
LOVE his voice in this song. I'm a rock/rap fan but grew up on country bc of family. I watched your livestream last night and you was talking about Reba McEntire; she has ALWAYS spoken to me. She is a phenomenal story teller. You talked about a "Reba night" I STRONGLY recommend "Reba McEntire - Fancy" You WILL NOT regret and will love it. "The nights the lights went down in Georgia" is another good one.
Paul Simon started writing this song in 1961 and did not finish it until after JFK was assassinated. 60 years later the meaning of this song is still with us, A society with vast differences and because of those differences we are unable to communicate with each other.
I got excited when they said let's get into the video, then saw the words....the Conan live performance of this is amazing! The old saying not to judge a book by it's cover!? The lead singer is classically trained just like a few other rockers that you've reacted to. The song in general is talking about remaining silent when you see tragedies and evil committed to others and remain quiet. From the genocides to civil unrest etc.your non words speak volumes. You're agreeing with the behavior of evil by remaining silent.
He was classically trained singer. And is very eclectic in the music he likes. Live he sings covers of other songs as well that are really good. It’s hard to believe this song is like 50 yrs old
This song was written by Paul Simon of Simon and Garfunkel in 1965. Paul Simon was one of the most prolific poets of the 60s, writing often about the human condition. Paul Simon said that this was his favorite cover of his song. Its mine too as Disturbed's delivery is powerful. In another of his songs The Boxer, Paul Simon says "a man hears what he wants to hear".
David Draiman has vocal training in his history. He has an exceptional voice that allows him to travel the range scales and to hold notes well.He fits into metal very well.
The live version from The Conan O'Brien Show is fantastic, as well. You really can appreciate the vocal range seeing it live. And on top of that....he was sick when he performed the song.
I really like this version of the song, and have great respect for the delivery, but never forget that the words are Paul Simon's written and recorded in the early 60s
This version blows Simon and Garfunkel out of the water! This is the best version of the song! The lead singer David draiman has an incredible voice! Even with his other songs! Even though mostly every song has the f word in it! Sounds of silence I still believe is disturbed's best work
I love how his voice starts out in the basement it’s so low and then he climbs however many octaves just beautifully! Watch him sing it on Conan- you’ll love it! Best group on a late night talk show ever in my opinion!
This song was written before cell phones, but I think it's about a society overrun by them. Talking without speaking, hearing without listening, texting. Everyone is silent living in their neon phone screens.
I really enjoyed your reaction to this amazing cover of a classic song. Too many reactors just ramble on, but you were both very insightful and really nailed the meaning of the lyrics. Thank you!
Even as a 10-year old child, the lyrics of this song deeply affected me. Disturbed's version of the song is a cover of the original by Simon and Garfunkel. The original is a poignant, prophetic warning of a future that might come to pass. Disturbed's version is an epic Jeremiad, calling out those who failed to heed the warning.
No. No its not. I dont know how people make that correlation. The lyrics are the exact same as they were when S&G wrote it originally. STill the same message, and that is people fail to communicate properly because of outside distractions. How is it a warning? Where in the lyrics does it say its a warning? WHen did the original writers say its a warning?? When did Disturbed say they were calling out those who failed to heed the warning? Where are you getting this from??
@@jasonharter4876 Sorry, but no. I made absolutely no claim that the lyrics had changed at all. My comment was about the emotional tone of the performance. Nothing more.
@@jasonharter4876 Right. Because every major, original artist just knows that others will cover their songs, and some will change it up and make it their own, one way or another. Perhaps by changing a haunting folk ballad into an angry jeremiad.
@@Grumpy_Rabbit or...if you listened to the interview, disturbed performed it the way they did because they couldnt figure out a way to make it sound like their other disturbed songs. Neither band had any intention of making it a warning, or fulfilling some sort of S&G prophecy. Your statement isnt even original. I call bullshit on your supposed deep thinking.
Shout out to "Simon and Garfunkel" who released that song of pure wisdom in 1964. The message of that song was relevant back then as it is still today.
@@mikeroth7080 David has several interviews out there that detail his level of vocal training. You don’t last as long as he has in the industry especially using the vocal fry he can produce without having extensive training. You can argue semantics all you want but it’s obvious to even a novice that he has received extensive instruction in a variety of disciplines.
Disturbed's version of this song is a reversal of its original message. He sounds full of passion and anger. He's ready to kick ass. That is the opposite of the song's original meaning, which was hopelessness and despair, no escape. They say Simon and Garfunkel both like Disturbed's version, I don't.
This is an amazing cover. The original was great but so different. The original writers love his version. He is amazing live. Got to see him at a music festival this past fall and he was amazing
I've seen many other reactions and you two nailed the basic idea behind the song. Paul Simon wrote it back in the mid '60s and had a huge hit with Art Garfunkel as a ballad. They sang it as a warning as to what was starting to happen. Disturbed perform it almost like a "You didn't pay attention and look what's happening!" If you can, catch the live version on Conan, absolutely chilling (and David Draiman was sick that night!)
I think the best comparative description I've seen was Simon & Garfunkel's version was a optimistic warning and Disturbed's version is angry the warning was ignored.
This song was written in 1963 as a warning of the future. Here we are in 2022 and now with social media we are living the world we were warned of. We all have different opinions and I’m pleased this song makes you think of your lives today Paul Simon contacted David and said that this song is now his. No greater honour
Garfunkel, introducing the song at a live performance (with Simon) in Harlem, June 1966, summed up the song's meaning as "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly intentionally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other."
David Draiman was classically trained to be a Jewish Cantor. This song was written by Paul Simon in 1964 just months after the JFK assassination. It was the song that launched the career of Simon and Garfunkel. Simon contacted Draiman after they released this cover of his song and endorsed it as the best version ever.
I love that Asia likes Disturbed cuz that's my favorite band like ever you can literally play any of their songs from any of their albums and it's awesome
Around three quarters of a billion people have watched the original video on RUclips which is amazing, but there's also a live version from the Conan show which is completely mind blowing too. Apparently, Paul Simon loves this version of his classic song too, which says just about everything.
Before Disturbed released this version of this song they played it to Paul Simon of Simon and Garfunkel. Paul Simon said it was the best cover he has ever heard
And this was written 50 years ago. I grew up on the Simon & Garfunkel version, but the song didn't hit home until Disturbed' version. You want to hear their primary sound try "Down with the Sickness."
He is also the lead singer in his other band, "Device". He started Device to do a different style of work outside of Disturbed for some time. I feel he really got into more vocal based work within Device durring that time. Hes VERY talented in vocals. If youve not heard of Device, you should check it out. He would get major lead vocalists from other bands to duo with him on there. Izzy Hale, M Shadows, lots of great other lead singers duoed with him on Device.
Yeah, even Paul Simon (originally his song), said that going forward the song now belonged to Disturbed. I thought that was the biggest compliment imaginable. Great reaction, guys! Y'all should check out the original by Simon & Garfunkle.
One of the greatest composed lyrics pen put to paper. As other people have noted, I feel this is the greatest cover version I have ever heard of any song.
Another version of this is by the metal band Nevermore. It’s more of a metal version of this song by Simon and Garfunkel. And they do a fantastic job also because Warrell Dane has an amazing metal voice
Asia and BJ I have only been listening to you guys for a few months, but I have to say you quickly jumped into my favorites. You both get it. Keep up the great work and I hope you keep going strong for long time to come.
as people have already mentioned this was written and sung by Simon and Garfunkel, it was written about the death of MLK. S+G's version was an announcement...this cover is a warning!!! David Dramain did a great job covering this, and yes he was the singer on "Down with the Sickness". He is a classically trained singer
this song is somewhat timeless, both when it was written, but today as well...One of my favorites from Simon and Garfunkel, also check out "The Boxer" by same...Rock ON!!
Simon and Garfunkel wrote this observation of our society back in the 60's but this version blows theirs away. I am 64 and grew with their music but this is beautiful !!!
A little context this a cover. A duo called simon and garfunkel did the original version of this song but this version is my favourite great reaction, just subbed, keep up the great work 👏👏👏
I agreed with a lot of what you said. However you can definitely tell he is a rock singer by the insanely good vocal fry he did for about a third of the song.🎸☺️
It's a cover of one of the best songs Simon and Garfunkle ever made. It's a legendary song. The original was made in the 60's early 70s during the Hippie age. The original is one of the best songs ever written and recorded, which only shows you how much better the Disturbed cover was. Because the writer of the song, Paul Simon ( one of the greatest songwriters, ever), said after hearing the cover with the lead singer of Disturbd, David Draimen covering the song. Paul Simon said, "it's there song now, it's amazing".
I watched in awe the performance of this song in Conan and it got me thinking of the lyric “the people bowed and prayed to the neon God they made”. Cell phones, right? Song was originally made in the 60’s prophetic maybe?
The live version from the Conan O'Brien show is pure perfection. Paul Simon loved it and promoted it on his social media, which he has never done for a cover of one of his songs.
What Simon and Garfunkel were singing about was people not communicating or loving each other. This song was written when the Vietnam war was going on.
Paul Simon has said he was very moved when heard this cover of his song. I weeped hearing this version for a thousand personal reasons. But one reason is because when musical emotion hits you - as it’s supposed to - then it becomes personal. This is as good as a cover gets.
Silence was something that occurred during the 60s. Government trying to shut down society protest, Russia not allowing anything to enter the country on the air waves to their people (total silence for the Russian people including any music from outside the country). We had a movement against the war in Vietnam and Equal Rights raging at the same time in America. Simon and Garfunkel had the best backdrop for writing the lyrics of this song. Today the lyrics are given their true nature by Disturbed, a warning that was not heeded and still ignored today. But there is always hope that is portrayed at the end of video as the boat approaches to the silenced masses and the sun is rising again.
If this is how you reacted to the lyric version, you definitely should have done the video version, guys. It's a great video. A new take on an old classic, and a great take at that....

@@russellhenderson381 David was pissed that the producers used auto--tune
David has quite a range for vocal coverage. This was the whole band playing this song.
What a power ballad cover. Draiman's voice is beyond incredible and dramatic.
If you think this was great you MUST see/listen/EXPERIENCE the live version from Conan. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Chills galore.
This^^^^
That is the only version I tell ppl to watch 💯
@@nate-404 Absolutely!!🥂
I absolutely love your interpretation of this song, I listened, heard & agree with both of you. Absolutely amazing!!! Keep up the awesomeness! 🤘😎🤘🖤🖤🖤🔥🔥🔥
Henk Poort did a great rendition of Disturbeds version too
this is a GORGEOUS cover of an already gorgeous song from geniuses simon & garfunkel. disturbed added so much depth and emotion, it kills me.
YOU WERE NOT READY FOR THE FRY IN HIS VOICE!!!!!!!!!
Paul Simon started writing this song in 1961 and did not finish it until after JFK was assassinated.
60 years later the meaning of this song is still with us,
A society with vast differences and because of those differences we are unable to communicate with each other.
It’s hard to believe this song is like 50 yrs old
Not classically trained! He is Jewish and was studying to be a Cantor/singer
He has an exceptional voice that allows him to travel the range scales and to hold notes well.He fits into metal very well.
he is Jewish and was training to be a Cantor/singer in the Jewish faith!
Sounds of silence I still believe is disturbed's best work
When you get the chance watch the official video. It makes the words/emotion so much more profound.
Thank you!
I got to see them do this song live at a festival. Talk about chills.
You guys are amazing! I appreciate your interpretation of the song and analysis. Will definitely follow and tune in for more. Keep it up!!!
@@Grumpy_Rabbit right...because s&g just new someone would make a cover of their song.
This song effects everyone the same way. Wow, just wow!!. Your serious looks told it all. An amazing cover of this song.
When silence is accompanied by lies, that people actually believe over what they actually see, it becomes more dangerous than silence alone.
Now you have to watch the official video... THEN the Conan live performance. Love this
I love how insightful and dialed in you two are when it comes to new music you haven't heard! Thank you
Great reaction... Their performance on Conan was priceless...
The most amazing cover ever recorded in my opinion. Can’t listen to this without the world stopping for a few minutes.
David was classically trained singer and he is a Cantor. This remake has blown people away.
Not classically trained and he dropped out of rabbinical school. He was training to be a Cantor
So many amazing songs by Disturbed. Your reaction to them made me subscribe. I really hope you go down this rabbit hole. You will not be disappointed.
This is an amazing cover. The original was great but so different. The original writers love his version. He is amazing live. Got to see him at a music festival this past fall and he was amazing
😲Oh you two... you really should have done the official video for this one- 💖💙✌️
First time watching you guys. I love this song, and your reactions. I'm subscribing. 👍
An impeccably brilliant cover of Paul Simon’s genius songwriting!!!❤️
We all have different opinions and I’m pleased this song makes you think of your lives today
Paul Simon contacted David and said that this song is now his. No greater honour
Garfunkel, introducing the song at a live performance (with Simon) in Harlem, June 1966, summed up the song's meaning as "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly intentionally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other."
Draiman is a classically trained operatic singer. He really knows how to use his voice as an instrument without damaging it.
No, he is Jewish and was training to be a Cantor/singer in the Jewish faith!
Amen, Brother.
Great reaction!!!..one of my favorites, thank you so much 🤘
What a great reaction you guys! Thanks so much! Peace and love from Cali! Now I gotta go listen to your sabotage reaction, that song is fire!
Paul Simon wrote the words and music he is a genius and almost no one an touch him. Art Garfunkle sings like an angel ....Paul creates like one.
David has one of the greatest singing voices I’ve ever heard, and I’ve listened to a lot of music in 33 years. He is amazing live in concert.
as people have already mentioned this was written and sung by Simon and Garfunkel, it was written about the death of MLK.
Great reaction!!! You should listen to it again with the video!!!❤️❤️🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Simon and Garfunkel wrote this observation of our society back in the 60's but this version blows theirs away. I am 64 and grew with their music but this is beautiful !!!
A little context
this a cover.
Now you need to to hear the original studio version by Simon and Garfunkel.
Hi guys...so, you must listen to the ORIGINAL version of this song. Simon and Garfunkel. The way it was meant to be heard.. Stay safe, keep listening.
Great reaction guys!! 👍Great cover of a classic song. He has great range that he normally doesn't show in their typical songs.
That perfect moment of silence at the end between "soouund, and "of silence" is my favorite part of this song
This song was written when the Vietnam war was going on.
they did such a great job on the cover. check out "inside the fire" by disturbed. very good band
Paul Simon has said he was very moved when heard this cover of his song. I weeped hearing this version for a thousand personal reasons. But one reason is because when musical emotion hits you - as it’s supposed to - then it becomes personal. This is as good as a cover gets.
The live version with myles kennedy.. 😲😲🤯🤯 got to check it out!! BEAUTIFUL! Love yalls channel!!
Rock is a super diverse genre, definitely can't judge by the heavier side 😊 a lot of profound stories are told through rock
Yes, that's what it does, It leaves you silent for a moment after all that.
I like the way you ooh and over the lyrics as if it wasn't written almost 60 years ago by Paul Simon. It's adorable. I love you guys.
Really need to see the official video to get the emotion in the song
In the original, Simon and Garfunkel sing their disappointment. He sings his rage. 😎
Love your personalities!! Plus, I'm a big Braves fan, love your choice in hats.
