    Good morning from the west coast of southern california ....you have a great video here . I fly fish the lagoons and beaches here in the summers and your tips are spot on .....I use both floating and sinking lines out here and get a lot of halibut . I use alot of bait fish patterns as well as crab , shrimp patterns . 6 to 7 wt. rods and reels for here .... I have 3 OKUMA salt water fly reels that are really inexpensive and hold up well for years now . 5/6 , 6/7 , and a 8/9 weights . my favorite go to fly for out here is a Orange bait fish pattern and a ghost shrimp pattern . next a chartuce / white bait fish pattern .....I swing them in the tidal current flows in my lagoons like streamer fishing a fresh water river or stream for trout and it works well for halibut . Ok thanks for the video I will show it to some friends who are just starting out with there fly fishing bum careers .....Ha !

      Thanks so kindly ski burn! There is a bit of stuff and fluff to talk about about getting started but most important you have proper tackle and then the time to get started. Never be to CA but would love to one day. Have to check that out! Been flinging some flys at some pickerel lately with some good results on deceivers. Thanks again for taking the time to watch, share and comment! Hope to see you in sunny California some day! Jerry

    Excellent advice. I urge people to always crush the hook barb.The fish appreciate and so will anyone who gets stuck. Also with no barb it's possible to let the fish go by simply putting slack in the line. That way you don't have to handle the fish.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  4 года назад +3

      Thanks Ted! Good point on the barbs, I do love the convince and ease of the barbless hook but I have found you do lose some. No big deal on a fast bite and I will crush them on spot. However on a sparse bite or hoping on a bigger fish I tend to leave them or lower if I feel they are too pronounced and interfere with a hookset. But over all its a great idea to crush them, thanks for sharing that Ted!

    Nice Atari music. Dropped by by accident. My first fly caught fish was a bonefish in Boca Paila Mexico in 2005. I got infected back then. Since then, I’ve caught 3 permit, one of them to make a grand slam, countless bonefish and tarpon, including a 170 and another 120 Lb tarpon, countless babies and countless bones, snook, barracuda, jack, snapper and many other species. My all around fly selection are whistlers in chartreuse, white, yellow, orange/red head, Merkin crabs and silly leg gotchas.... Remember, simple is beautiful. Good thing for lazy fly tiers like me is saltwater game fish are not that picky as trout or (sometimes)bass. Cheers from Old Mexico City.

      Wow! You so clearly described the tune Rodrigo! Just amazing stuff you have to share! I never had the chance to fish tropical waters but my fly fishing splast was a interesting one. I used to go for trout here and there when I could get the delaware as a kid every summer. Mostly spin fishing but would use the fly rod here and there not know what I was doing but would get a rainbow here and there. Later I fished central PA mostly for smallmouths and largies on the fly and then move to salter northeast water where I do mostly stripers and flounder on the fly. I double on the simple Id rather be fishing then tying flies! Thanks again for sharing your experience Rodrigo!

    Thanks Jerry your channel is a Godsend to newbies like me. I picked up a nice outfit i put together with a Lamson 3 pack spare spools and a sinking like called , Sonar 3d 3sink 5 sink.. and a SA Bass Bug floater..
    i just need some striper and largemouth flies to get started and leader material as u suggested and I will be ready here in Atlantic City for my first season of fly fishing :)
    Question if i may? The Half and Halfs and Clousers, how does the weight work with an already weighted line? Do u throw them on the sinking lines or ur floater?

  • @skorflyfishing
    @skorflyfishing 5 лет назад +1

    Thanks for taking the time to make and share this video. I don't understand why you don't get the line on the reel instead of stripping fish in. Especially in the rocks. Also, for others that are new to the salt, a 9wt with heavy sinking line may be right for what is happening in this video, but is in no way the right rod for all species and conditions. For instance if you are wading the keys for bones, this set up is wrong. The same goes for wading a marsh for redfish.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  5 лет назад +3

      Thanks flyfisherskor, you do stand correct, the information in the video is primarily directed to inshore north east fly rodders. It is in the write up below. I use many setups for bay, pier, ocean and jetty and I direct this as one setup i would utilize if I only had to pick ONE to start and learn with in all environ the north east region of the US considering deeper cooler moving waters. Thanks for pointing that out!

Leader - For sinking line any 4-6 foot 30 pound mono line will work but I like a 50/50 leader 2ft-2ft (50-30, 30-15, 20-10 etc) .... I did not understand how I should build the leaders .... Probably a stupid question, but it's a question. All I have is a 5 weight rod/reel that I use for fresh water trout, bass, and sunfish. I'm going on vacation and was curious if I could get away with throwing smaller flies and attempting to sight fish in the shallows in flordia for small fish. Would this be ok or and I asking for a bad time?

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  4 года назад +3

      I say GO FOR IT! Not a bad idea. One of the things which make a good fisherman a great one is the ability to use what they got and you by reading your comment got it! Most folks gauge a angler by numbers or weight. I gauge anglers for the ability to adapt and thats what makes you great. It will work so long you match your flies and compensate angles for distance. I use 2/3 of a 5wt fly rod on the pier all the time, it works!

      Awesome thank you! I’m starting out here with a 6/7 wt rod, I’m more thinking about my line and leader set up. I’m leaning towards the rio mainstream saltwater line, and I’ve read about leaders that are just connected Mono’s with barrel swivels, 40, 30, 20, 5 ft if each or so. I’ll be in the surf AND in the bay. Anything you can offer tip wise would be helpful for me at this point. Thanks a ton!

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  6 лет назад +1

      Much welcome Derek. I use 90% of the time a sinking line 4ips so my leader I useually use 30 straight or 2-3ft 30lb followed by 2-3 ft 15 if I need lighter which is often. Heavey if i need heavy or even 8 or ten if spooky fish. I dont use any hardware just surgeon knots and perfection loops. If I am using a flosting line then I would do about a 5-3--2 or so formula so I would use about 5ft 40lb - 3ft 30lb to 2ft 20lb then my leader or tippet. Of course you can vary this like 4-2-1 etc for heavier or lighter flys. I actually use tapperd leaders the last a good while and I just change to low portion when I need to they are inexspensive and will get 15 or 20lb ones and cut and add if I need them heavier to accord. Anything just ask ok!

      FishJonesBeach thanks again! It’s good to know that there are options, and I’ll just try a couple/few until I find the one I think works best for me and the way I cast (I assume it’s not the most technically correct cast)

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  6 лет назад +1

      No such thing as technically correct in my book! Best approach try a few see what works as long as you have some taper you should be good to go! even a 3-2-1 will get it done more aggressive for bigger flys less for smaller.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  3 года назад +1

      Hi Alexander I cant see why not, for floating line I just use a 50lb to 30lb with a 15lp tipet 6-4-3 about. Sinking I will just use a 6ft to 4ft piece of 30lb mono or 3ft 30 to 2ft 15 for straters may add 12lb for light etc

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  3 года назад +1

      The flies are generally big so they will turn most leaders and found the formulas need not be precise. Many guys just use 9ft 30lb mono for the float line the find the flies just propel themselves anyhow

  • @robertjanko6709
    @robertjanko6709 6 лет назад +1

    Really: I have never seen somebody fishing flatfish with a fly. Like allways a nice video and good explanations. :o)
    But the stuff you use is like for Salmon fishing in europe, here a 7-8 rod with wf line is quite heavy stuff. Love your flies and the easy rules you use the different colors.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  6 лет назад +2

      Thanks Robert! You can get away with lighter outfits but throwing 3/0 flies sometimes it gives you that extra punch in the wind you may need. Exclusive jetty fishing I would recommend 11wt but 9 is a great place to start!

    • @robertjanko6709
      @robertjanko6709 6 лет назад +1

      I can imagine, that its hard to throw because the weight and size of your flies. To cast them with a light line under wind is impossible. How long are the rods you are using?

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  6 лет назад +3

      Most are 8ft but I do use one 9ft, some guys spey cast you can reach out more but done with bigger rods and reels. Some days the elements will be in your favor but most they are not and need to play with the environment

    • @FishYourWay

      That will do it, you can use an 8 or even 9 load it up for the wind better which seem to be ever present. You can certainly vary and points in this video are just for a good starting point but yes will do!

    Hello, I loved the video and I would like some tips. I started fly fishing 2 years ago and I do not have a huge arsenal yet, I have an 8wt rod and am going to get a reel for it but I saw the video and figured I should ask a professional about my problem.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  6 лет назад +1

      Any 8 wt reel or so should do I like to go lighter I think the pflueger medalist 1495 1/2 is pefect the 1495 is good to as well as the 1496. the 1498 i think is too big but its a good reel if yoou dont mind the extra weight. A good low priced reel also is the redington crosswater 7/8/9 nice light reel smooth drag just as good as high priced models. Spools for these reels are also redily available too and reasonable priced. The reel mostly just holds your line so you really dont have to go nuts on price hope that helps!

    • @BasementAthletics
      @BasementAthletics 6 лет назад +1

      What about the Redington Behemoth or the Hydros Sl because of their warranty but they are slightly out of my price the Hydros more then the Behemoth but I am a beginner so I am easily distracted by flashy reels and stuff so I need guidance. So thanks.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  6 лет назад +1

      Yea they both will do the trick and are pretty good reels with readily available spools. The crosswater is a lower price range and will certainly do the trick. I think even the spare spools are on 20 bucks or so new!

    I'm having trouble finding a saltwater sinking line that fits the bill. Any recommendations? I see lots of intermediates and floating lines available.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  5 лет назад +1

      Most lines should get you what you need. I use all diffrent brands and yes i have found the more exspensive lines do manage better,, less twist, smoother casting but many off brands and classic lines still get you the performance you need. A good general line at a fair price I like are the cortland 333 or 444. I have used and use them in many of my video. they are fine in the salt as well never had a problem with that and actually cast really well. Bass pro and cabelas should also have cheaper alternatives that will work well my fluking line for the jetty is a cabelas 10ft sink tip I love for that. Beach a 30ft sink tip 4-6ips with a floating running line, backwater I prefer a floating where the 333 or 444 is perfect. Check ebay they often have pretty good deals look around till you found the line you want for a few days sellers may also be selling higher priced but used lines for 1/4 the price of new on there too! Hope some helps and any questions let me know. Fish Your Way! Jerry

    I mostly fish flies in saltwater because releasing fish is so much simpler. But, now I'm 72 and got a spin rod with braid for snotty conditions. Two questions: 1. Does the medalist fly reel drag handle False Albacore? 2. I'd like to send you some flies could you contact me with a mailing address?

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  4 года назад +1

      Hi Theodore, I can not say for sure as I have not landed any false albacore with them but should hold enough 20lb backing for a good run, MAY want to do the 1498 which would easily handle most any saltwater finned gamefish. But I would be comfortable with a 1495-1/2 for albies they are much lighter and the drag is quite good on them you can get a rim control spool too for added drag. Thanks mighty kind of you! If you like you can get my email in the ABOUT section of the youtube page. Just click over it and it will display me email send a email and well go from there. So much appreciate any question just let me know, always kindest, Jerry

      Very fun fishing on the fly you will enjoy it. If the like crabs I am think some leggy patterns? In the salt moving water on the bottom where crabs would be most defitanily a sinking line! Crabby patterns, shrimps, clouser minnows should do well! You will need to find local patterns by experimentation but you are on the right track! sage and many other rods are life time guarantee. break it they replace them. I sent the broken piece in and the serial number of the rod, the built me a new tom section and painted the same serial number on it to math the other 2 sections. The replacement fee is $50 for the matching and shipping. Not too bad, seeing the rod cost about $600 originally. But I did try to get the state to pay for the replacement and my fly line, another $60 or so, DENIED! I go nothing!

    Really great video very informative. I decided to expand my horizons this year and get myself setup for SW fly fishing... great thing is there are many companies who offer some quality value priced setups (Red, reel, line and backing) all that is missing are a few flies and a fly box :)

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  6 лет назад +2

      Its a truly awesome pure yet raw sport. complete connection with your environment and quarry. rewarding. Keep an eye on values till you find a setup you feel is worth the money. Most of my rods are under 50 bucks some worth over 100 but I like the cheaper ones better i dont feel so bad when i bang em around and the cast just as well! Fly boxes are great but its funny the few flies I use in a day I generally just keep in my front pocket but I feel more secure carry a few boxes you never know! You will enjoy it Dan! • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  6 лет назад +2

      Sinking lines your ok with plain mono. Try a few formula but 60-40--20 or 50-30-15 taperd down should do it, I think its more of a matter of the size on the end you want to use. I would use about 4ft-2ft-1ft about a little more or less. More of a feel then a science

    Good video, but I had to stop watching after 5 minutes because the music made it too hard to listen to the talking.
