    Nolan, I stumbled on your channel - as I just bought a G85 for my channel. I've only watched a few videos of yours tonight - but I am glad I found you. Your editing is great. Your shots and music are professional. I feel I'll learn a lot from your viddies. Cheers, you have a new sub.

      not really drastically since you have only 8 bits, it may add only like half a stop of dynamic range compared to natural

    • @escarface
      @escarface 4 года назад +2

      Drastically in the sense that most color changes made in post will either satisfy the look you are going for or will have elements of the natural colors already blending into the finished look. In 8 bit or 10 bit you want a flat colorless image to take full advantage of when grading.

    • @KtmDesignz
      @KtmDesignz 4 года назад

      @@escarface wrong again, 8 bits images are not meant to be heavy graded, maybe a couple of adjustments here and there but if you take the colour and contrast off an 8bit image those will be gone forever, people using vlog and fake flat profiles in 8 bits colours space always is an amateurish sign

    • @escarface
      @escarface 4 года назад +3

      @@KtmDesignz I hear what you are saying but you talk as if everyone can afford (especially while learning) a 10 bit camera. Many people get by with 8bit before seeing the beauty of 10 bit.

    Great test Nolan, although the Natural is good the graded Cinelike D does grab back some of the highlights. Although in truth nothing from the shadows which is a surprise to me. I’m having enough problems getting my G80 and FZ2000 to come close on their Cinelike D settings! In post they are not even close.

    • @NolanGunn

      Yeah I agree! That's too bad you're not able to match well! It's such a pain when they're different...

    • @BarryMaskell
      @BarryMaskell 4 года назад +1

      The FZ2000 has the same 20.1-MP 1.0” type BSI MOS sensor as my little LX10 whilst the G85 has a MFT so may explain issues - My LX10 has the CineLike D profile disabled as standard but have enabled it through a software hack and the LX10 tends to be a bit more noisy in the shadows but has a bit more dynamic range than the G85

    • @ive595
      @ive595 4 года назад

      Barry Maskell Thanks Barry, yes I was coming to the conclusion that the sensor size was the issue. Think I might look around for a GH4 or get another G80, problem with the G80 is the poor slow motion capability, whilst the FZ has all the settings of the GH4.

  • @BarryMaskell
    @BarryMaskell 4 года назад +1

    Great video comparison - Can you tell me what your in-camera contrast settings (highlights & Shadows) were set to (S curve) - Contrary to many other video comparisons you have proved that Cine D is superior to Natural especially with the right camera settings - I'm going to try these settings on my tiny LX10 (CineLike D Hacked)

    • @NolanGunn

    I got the g7, and the natural clips the highlights really quick, cine D give more play on the highlights i can expose the zebras to almost 75 on skintones. The color correction on cined is a bit tricky but im really closed to giving the same looks as the natural. Just need more time to try it. I notice that the flurescent greens and brights orange need to correct on cine d.blues are almost good. Keep it up! Is a great codec but is really time consuming.

    Hi, im shooting some of video in low light & its so much noise, would it better if Inuse picture profile “ natural” to shoot in low light situation?

    • @NolanGunn
      @NolanGunn  4 года назад +1

      Natural won't necessarily help. You need to be shooting at a lower ISO (no more than 1600 imo). You can accomplish this by making your shutter speed lower (minimum of 50ss for 24p and 100ss for 60p) if you're still having issues, you may need to pick up a lower aperture lens (like an F/2 or F1.4)

      @@NO-oo6uj Well, I have my G85 just this year and am loving it. But it does require shooting a bit differently than, say, my Canon 600D. Then again, the Canon required different workflow than my medium formats or 4x5's, so....
      One added suggestion: If you set the style to "natural" or bring down the contrast, the shadows should be brought up a bit. And thus out of the darkest and grainiest part of the spectrum. I hesitate to go all V or D log, as that has issues too. Especially if you are shooting with 8-bit/channels.

      Does this not mean that it is best to shoot with Natural profile with saturation down by -2? As far I see from your shots the difference in details is not much between Natural and Cine D. I am going to try shooting on Natural on my next assignment with absolutely no change in settings (that is, zero for all). Then the camera is as good or as bad as point and shoot. The only thing that you can play with is focus and depth of field. There is another commentary here which says it's not worth shooting flat profile on 8-bit. Well, I am a little disappointed with G85 now. Has the 10-bit upgrade for G85 come after all the hullabaloo. I have the latest firmware update but it is still 8-bit.

      @@NolanGunn Could that be banding issues? It's my understanding that while we may have Cine settings, we are still dealing with an 8-bit file. And at some point, pushing (ie color grading) it may show. I just had an issue with some under lit green screen banding.
      Though on the flip-side, Gerald Undone did a video where he had to work really hard to get banding, thus came to the conclusion that 10-bits and more may not be a real benefit in most cases.
