Testing My Blood Sugar: How Exercise Affects Blood Sugar

  • In today's video, I'll be testing out the effects of exercise on my blood sugar. I'll be comparing the impact of high intensity interval training (HIIT) versus brisk walking on my blood sugar after eating the exact same meal.
A little history about my blood sugar journey... I was told I was insulin resistant in 2017 after a glucose tolerance test my reproductive endocrinologist ordered for me when I was having trouble getting pregnant. And after conceiving, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes very early on. Since then, I've been diligently learning about blood sugar dysregulation and gathering data through constant finger pricks and CGM experiments since I am now at greater risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes in the future. I've learned A LOT about what works and doesn't work for my body, and how my body responds to different foods. I hope this video helps you on your path to a healthier lifestyle!

Thanks for the posts. I am able to drop my glucose levels 30 - 40 points while doing an 1 hour Zone 2 stationary bike ride. Weight lifting does not seem to affect my levels. FYI: I have found peanuts in the shell are a great snack and no bump in glucose levels. Happy New Year!

great experiment, everyone's body is different, I normally exercise every other day one hour at gym, I recently started adding 40 minutes indoor biking the other day that I didn't go to gym and I was shocked, with my type 1 diabetes, I stopped injecting insulin and it's been 3 times my BG dropped below 4 mmol unit , frightening, for me, intense exercise raise my BG but after 3, 4 hours drops significantly, light exercise drops my BG steady

Walk might work better to reduce and bring spike down earlier while HIIT might work better for good long term effect such as longevity

It depends on the length of your walk and your glycogen (glucose) stores (in both liver and muscle tissue). For example in a one hour walk it is possible to deplete all glycogen stores and end up hypoglycemic in the hour post walk. When my wife was diagnosed with insulin resistance she always kept candy in the car for the drive home from the walking trail because she became woozy from hypoglycemia.

Hiit spiked your cortisol levels higher compared to brisk walking. Steady state jogging or walking works way better bec you spike cortisol less. There is a youtuber who did an experiment on steady state cardio. Just don't go anaerobic & you will experience lower blood sugar.

You know that heat can affect your blood sugar right? A hot day can make your body sweat profusely and dehydrated, releasing the glucose to your body and spike the blood sugar levels. I'm surprised that didn't spike your blood sugar higher.
Walk should be done very early in the morning before the sunrise and when the heat calm down during the day.
I do low impact aerobic 5 day of the week and 3 days of the week resistance and strength. My diet is very low carbs, but for time to time I have some treats like a pancake, i don't eat pancakes regularly, I ate once a month.
My last result of HbA1c came back very good at 4.5 .
Exercise no matter what kind of activity you do as long you keep your body moving, helps your body regulate your glucose.

I really enjoy your videos. I think the biggest difference is sustainable exercise. I think walking is way more effective because of how easy it is and also logically the duration of exercise matters. HIIT is also good bc you can do it shorter and still effective. But, it is much more challenging to do it every day after meals. Walking on the other hand, you can do it without a sweat. You can walk longer too. The time for blood sugar to go down from my experience benefits more when the exercise is longer. I was advised by trainer that if I want to really effectively lower blood sugar then asked me to walk at least 20 mins and then do squats or calf exercises for 5 mins. This kinda combines both benefits and easy to do. I think HIIT is more for cardiovascular benefits than blood sugar benefits if we talk about which one is more effective :)
I'd love to see you try maybe after eating a fast food like KFC whole bucket and then compare both exercise to see which one could be more beneficial!

    • @thegoodenoughmama
      @thegoodenoughmama  11 месяцев назад

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, walking is more sustainable for sure and easy to incorporate into one's daily routine. When I had gestational diabetes, I found weight training to be the most effective in bringing my blood sugar down. I don't think I could stomach an entire bucket from KFC!

If you want to do HIIT training, you need to get progressively into it by increasing the intensity, lowering the recuperation time and increasing the number of repetitions. When done right, it's going to what it's supposed to do.. Drain you out in a short amount of time.

It’s a decent experiment, but I’d think one time each isn’t enough. I’d do one workout for a week, then the other for a week. Or do both alternating for two weeks.
One sample for each shows you something, but it’s probably not enough to conclude anything.

I see this video was made a year ago but hoping you still read the comments. Are you diabetic or do you just test glucose to keep from being diabetic? I am not diabetic yet but get concerned as I get older. I have been usually doing the timed eating thing where I don't eat breakfast but eat my first meal about 1pm. I usually walk in the morning on an empty stomach. I was wondering if you have ever fasted in the morning and exercised and then ate later on. Did walking or high intensity help keep your blood sugar stable even when eating later on in the day? Thank you.

Hi, thanks for watching! I am not diabetic, but I am insulin resistant and glucose intolerant, per my reproductive endocrinologist dr, and I've had an a1c in the prediabetic range. Check out my video where I tested the effects of exercise before eating or after eating. That will help answer some of your questions!

This is a great question! I will have to do a blood sugar experiment on this.
