I'm glad to see that ETH Zurich is slowly but surely rising in the rankings. I think for engineering and technology it could be seen as the MIT of europe.
Depends on what rankings you look at, some have US holding to 20 spots some have the US holding 6 or 7 of the top 10. These vary a lot for some reason.
The University of Melbourne is great imo, it's nice to see it steadily go up the rankings year-by-year, hopefully it'll be in the Top 10 list on day. It's about time we see Australia's great quality of education get some global recognition!
From a personal POV on *employability* post degree, I think these lists are largely irrelevant. I am VP of HR for a large tech company based in the UK. I hire many domestic and international grads every year. Unless your degree is from an African "university", I really dont care where it is obtained. Majoring subject and passing grade is of much more interest. An Oxford or Harvard degree looks great on a resume, but as long as you have achieved a first class degree in a RELEVANT subject from an accredited institution, you will be interviewed. A good resume only gets you an interview. If the decision comes down to somebody with a degree from Cambridge or somebody with a degree from San Diego State, it will be about personality, how well they interviewed, how well they demonstrated their coding skills in the practical tests, how well they are likely to fit in with the team etc. It will never ever come down to where somebody studied (fyi - that was a real life example and the girl from SDSU was offered a position). So to all undergrads who've just missed out on that Ivy League or OxBridge spot and are freaking out......the tech world really doesnt give a shit! This is not the Legal or Banking sector, on which I cannot comment. Work hard, get good results and you will get exactly the same job you would have if you'd have gone to Yale etc etc. One last thing.....please dont wear ripped jeans to your interview.....I know its a relaxed atmosphere, but have a little pride in yourself...please!!!!!
You make a great point. This will apply to the vast majority of openings in the job market. I will say, from experience, the social network you are introduced to at these higher institutions open up far greater opportunities. I submitted my dissertation to MIT after receiving my undergrad from state school and was lucky enough to get accepted. I got to rub elbows with some very well connected individuals and formed an invaluable social network. My research study connected me with a group from Oracle when they were rushing to get cloud computing up to par with other tech giants. I am part of a think tank and I am connected with individuals all over India and the UK. You are right, the interview is where the decision is made when hiring but ones social network can land interviews with these big companies that have limited openings.
My university is not even in top 200, but I feel like I'm in hell already HAHAH. Though I decided to drop out and apply to another university this summer, wish me luck!
Oxford now has almost the best quantum computer technology in the world. Plus, Oxford has superior reputation over the humanistic subjects in the world. Oxford is really under-estimated, especially, in science subjects honestly. Oxford deserves number one.

I almost agree with you. The whole ranking table does not make sense utterly. For example, UC Berkeley, Columbia and LSE is even lower than Edinburgh.
