You, long time fans of Initial D, will be very, very happy. It's not just MF Ghost, a direct sequel for Intial D that's dropping in 2023, it's also this anime called Hi-DRIVERS. Somehow, this wild marketing campaign, with a music video, officially licensed cars and more, got approved at the office of Sunrise studios, the big studio responsible for Gintama, Code Geass, Cowboy Bepop and similar. Lemme just say, that the music video they dropped looks AMAZING, and the project is being hyped like no other. No surprises there though, because ever since Initial D ended, no other racing anime has really torn the world apart. But now 2023 might just prove us different. If these two are successful, more anime like Initial D will start popping up, and we might just be in for a new generation of amazing hi-drivers content.

APOLOGY 1: A good portion of you keeps reminding me, that I forgot to include Gundam, and you're right. I've never heard of this anime before, because it was banned in my country. I should've included it, but now, that I googled it and recognized its importance, I know. My deepest apologies 😀
APOLOGY 2: Yes, yes I mispronounced Cowboy Bebop. I DO know about that anime, I watched like 2 episodes and then kinda forgot about it. It's not about me being young, or a kid, I watched Naruto twice and still struggle to pronounce it properly, it's not about age it's about incompetence, something, I seem to have an abundance of 😀. Anyway, I was bullied by y'all to watch it, so the next time I'm sick (probably very soon) I'll 100% watch Cowboy Bebop... and I'll love it!

@@mckinnonwolf7877 I enjoyed it personally but I totally understand why people would not like it. Though I will say as the years have passed its premise is becoming more and more of a real thing.
@TheFather yup it is boring due to the era it came from... even if modified to fit better in the year it released into anime it doesn't take apart it is from the early-mid 90's where street gangs and mid-night club time-setting records and movies like Shuto Kousoku Trial were still fresh. Whilst Drift was starting to form professionally as a sport when Initial D came to manga then anime.
A few that would be interesting to have animated would be Car Graffiti JK, Over Rev!, Kanojo no Carrera, Countach!, and for the reason of slice of life and car restoration, Zesshaka.
One reason Initial D was so popular was because of the mostly correct statistics. There were a few that didn't add up, but they made everything, from horsepower, gear ratios, tire width, downforce, to even the mindset of the drivers a big part of it.
and the writing and animation. to note, the anime exaggerated the characters out so damn well that Iketani and Itsuki are 2 of my fav characters of the entire show, better than even the manga itself. Only at the 3rd movie onward, the writing became a bit repetitive, the story fell apart, and there's nothing more to Takumi other than that he's a good driver in a capable shitbox, which is NOT how it is, because you were shown from the first stage that he loves to care for his car.

The deeper you get into Initial D, the more you'll realize that even some of the dumbest things in the show actually make sense. Yes, even the Fujiwara Zone. The Fujiwara Zone getting a bad reputation was because of it's poor misrepresentation in the show. I won't explain it because it can be a bit difficult to understand to some people, but basically it's not what it looks like, so do a bit of research if you're interested in finding out what I mean.
After all these years, I think the dumbest occurrence in Initial D was a cat jumping out onto the road in front of Tomoyuki (the pro EK9 driver representing Todo School) causing him to give Takumi the lead. Everything else is more or less explainable. I say all this because I feel kinda bad for the author (Shuichi Shigeno) because so many people miss the point of some of the things he wrote into Initial D and it just makes his work feel like so much less of a masterpiece than it really is.
@@undividual3891 Yea because they added some effects with the fujiwara zone to make it look cooler but irl it is a very subtle move, almost not noticeable until the car in front gained distance.

Honestly im more hype for MF Ghost, the characters in this anime fit more to an idol themed anime than a street racing one. Either way the graphics and animation are outstanding

MF ghost will not be that good unfortunately. There isn’t much source material for one. The main character beats lambos and raris in high speed races with a gt86 which makes zero sense. It’s not like initial D. Also it’s street racing ig buts also still kind of a sanctioned tournament unlike initial d which was all mountain passes at night. I’m not trying to hate but I don’t want y’all to get over hyped for ghost just for it to let you down cus it probably will. There’s a formula 4 racing anime coming out too called Overtake.
@@RESPECTxORANGES As shown with Initial D, power doesn't mean shit on the downhill. So unless MF Ghost also has MC racing uphill and somehow beating out Lambos and the sort, its completely in the realm of possibility.
The Initial D and Wangan Midnight are so special to anime racer and automotive fans in general is because the technical aspects of the show is so on point. The quirks of the cars that they showcase are so distinct to the real world counterpart, and driving technique are well explain and can teach you how to drive. To what I can see Hi-Drivers are more on lifestyle and music culture with some cars through in to it to add some spice, but I'm eager to see and watch this Anime it was a very interesting concept that they going for and seeing how they handle and expand their idea. I hope the upcoming Anime racers like Overtake, Hi-Drivers and especially MF Ghost will tap the technical aspects of the automotive culture if their going to tackle this type of genre.

from what I read in manga I agree. the story far not good as initial D. I remember scene where the driver make overtaking move but fail at exit corner. he cannot maximize the acceleration because "limited by traction control".
the car is lotus, that have less power but light weight. if the driver have skill that kind car has fraster without abs or tc assist. for comparission the MC cut off all of assist fetures in his car.
Fun Fact: Sunrise studio had previously worked on a racing anime.
Future GPX Cyber Formula TV series and array of OVA's are produced by them and they're awesome (both for animation and for characters).
So It kinda gives me hope that they have some people interested in such (car racing) projects.

Oh know that's bad news Cyber Formula racing is kinda awful and defy logic on so many levels and definitely lacking research on the actual racing in favour of dramatic effects. I remember one race where the main character switch tyre because he senses there is a rain coming he was the first to change tyres and the main antagonist was the last to change tyres but the main antagonist didn't lose anytime at all and still leading despite going 360 on a straight. Not the mention how cocky the series claiming they have replaced F1 despite their pitstop take 18 seconds while an actual F1 pitstop can get to under 2 seconds
Hi-Driver is aimed at young women and that is what helped sell it to the manufactures. In Japan, there is a growing interest in cars among younger, high-earning, professional women.
The focus is not so much on racing, but on character arc and storyline development.
My source lives in Japan. Sadly, this will not be another Initial D or MF Ghost. It will be more music and character focused, just with a side of car enthusiasm. I’m still watch it though.

In my opinion, I think one of the greatest factors on why Initial D was so popular was because it was super down to earth, and reflected the actual experience of 90's street racing (until the latter seasons), but another huge reason is drifting. The first "battle" with Keisuke was so cool specifically because of the inertial drift technique. Drifting continued to be a common technique used by many drivers throughout the series, and really brought up the action, aside from the other racing techniques. It's the reason I prefer Initial D over any other car anime to ever exist, specifically because of the reflection of car culture/actual car sh*t and drifting. Personally I'm not hyped for MF Ghost, mainly due to how it seems like a copy paste of Initial D. Low HP crappy car turns out to beat everyone on the touge, same story different car.

I’m not a fan of MF Ghost because of its focus on exotic super cars instead of tuners.
First things first, my father is older than Studio Sunrise.
Yeah, besides Initial D, the only other anime centered around street racing was Wangan Midnight. It only got one season. I don't know how many volumes of the manga it covered, and how many volumes were published.
There's this other manga about street racing called "Overrev!", and it can be described as Initial D with more girl racers. One of the main character's friend even makes a vague mention of Initial D. I would love it if it gets an anime adaptation.
As for Hi-DRIVERS, it's the first time hearing about it, and I'm (cautiously) excited over what it will offer to the viewers.

I'm a big car enthusiast and Initial D was one of the triggers for me to eventually get into cars/drifting. The biggest thing that I loved about the early Initial D stuff and why I bought an AE86 as my first car was that it felt a lot more grounded and really reflected the car scene of the time, along with a lot of the stuff I saw on Hot Version and Option magazine.
This seems more like a flashy music anime with a backdrop of expensive cars than a show for car enthusiasts. I'm not really into that at all but I'll probably check it out if anything comes of it.
The only thing that is (for me) a must be in racing anime is a fast paced music while the race lasts. (Eurobeat or that Japanese Rock from the Legends Movies)

As a Japanese person who did a little bit of research on this, I'm not sure if this will be like Initial D or Wangan Midnight. The official website does not say it is an anime, but they call it a "fan-participatory project that will develop via various kinds of media". Besides the radio you mentioned, all they have released is a series of voice dramas (anime but no motion picture) where the characters make a team and participate in a racing competition(?). As of now, the cool racing animation seems exclusive to the MV. Possibly they will release an anime some time, but I assume it will be more about the characters and the voice actors than the cars. Personally, I am more expectant for the upcoming MF Ghost anime.

Brother this is just gonna be Love Live but for people who are into boy bands. I wouldn't be surprised if they end up releasing a gacha before they do an anime, or both at around the same time.
I can already see this disappointing so many people who are looking for a new car anime, you can tell they are aiming for the Japanese J-POP band demopraphic with this project.
Japanese companies licensing out Japanese cars doesn't sound all that crazy to me either, just a few years back we had Syanago Collection release which had dozens of licensed cars accompanied by anthropomorphized versions of the same, though that one never took off and was shortly discontinued.
I would love to be wrong and have this turnout to be a very intricate show that goes deep into car culture while reeling in the idol demographic but to me that seems very unlikely.
Yeah, part of me is afraid of this too... I was surprised Toyota licensed their cars, even though they rejected everythubg except Gran Turismo, but I guess that only concerns games... And yeah I'm not into J-Pop too much either.. really hope you're wrong man 😆

@@zoomingpast the funny thing about Toyota and their car license is that they are completely ok with licensing their cars for the Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune arcade cabinets. so I don't think the "illegal street racing" is the only factor that's stopping games to have Toyotas

@@HeyItzRaiderZ In my view, it just seems to be easier for them to reach an agreement with Japanese developers when they themselves are a Japanese manufacturer. No idea why they closed themselves to outsiders past Need for Speed (2015) but it sure had nothing to do with street racing.

I haven't completed watching the initial D and by the episodes that I have watched there's a good sense of " I can relate to that" moments and I think there won't be any feeling like that in the Hi-Drivers

Look promising, they have licenses from the Bulls of JDM and probably a mediocre character, but the racing probably be as exciting as Initial D, where the creator must catch the supporting excitement to any races, where you cheer and hold your breath for your favourite.
Yeah, Takumi was also mediocre, if you look at it from a personality perspective (when it came to driving he was a god), and I think that the animation will definitely help the excitement of the races

*I'm sure this is just a music video and not going to be an anime. Just a cool project for their channel. That's why it says it's done airing and one of it's tag words is "musical". They also managed to get the licensing for those four car brands due to the popularity of their channel and quality of their video also showing their cars in a great light. On top of that, there being no subtitles in other languages tells me they're not really too worried about it being seen outside of Japan. All of this adds up for me in a manner that says that I should expect nothing more to come from this. It looks cool though and would be a great idea. However, it would be nice if I'm wrong.*

Bandai Namco is also the game developer behind the Wangan Mdnight Games, Project Cars, Moto GP, and Ridge Racer.
I think that's the reason they got the licensing, and proves they know a thing or two about cars.
Hopefully it actually dives into the tuning culture and isn't overly cringe.

Sunrise also made a name for themselves and continues to do so through a series called “GUNDAM”. They’ve produced a large majority of all series of Gundam that exist and various movies. I have full faith in this project now that I know Sunrise is on board.

Sunrise also do Love Live series. It is actually similar. Love Live MV is 2010 and Love Live anime is 2013. I believe we going get Hi-drivers anime. I don't think it's musical anime. It feel more like they having performances after racing.
Sunrise also makes one of the most well know Idol Anime Series... Love Live, from what I saw in the music video and the fact TOYOTA is a part of this project, there's a high chance with could be an Boy Idol anime. Scratch that, thinking about the title 100% this will be an Idol anime with cars sprinkled in.
I'd be fine with that as well (I mean the boys do look kinda hot ngl) but it would be so much cooler if it actually was focused on cars and racing

we've come to an age where sunrise studio is not widely known anymore.
Now I'm kinda hoping for this anime to introduce muscle cars built for drag racing with a big ass 10L V8 and a roots supercharger sticking out the hood. On top of muscle cars, some muscle trucks built for drag racing like an old Chevy K10 would be awesome too.
I loved Initial D for many reasons, but one of the main reasons was the characters. They looked relatively simple compared to most central characters, with Simple outfits, hair, and actually different clothes every episode. Now everybody has colored hair, over-the-top outfits, and usually annoying big egos. Like Keisuke had a super-inflated ego then got brought down and you saw him grow. Usually in training that wasn't shown and sometimes in the middle of the race. But it's "realistic" changes in races. Not "through the power of friendship where you lose all 4 limbs, and then your life flashes before you're eyes while you hear your friend screaming and grow back all 4 limbs" type of evolution. So I'm not holding my breath seeing the clips shown.
But I just really hope I'm wrong and it's great.

If I remember correctly toyota didn't strike a deal with other racing games aside from need for speed heat and onwards because of street racing but it was because NFS would not agree to Toyota's high price range with very little number of cars nfs wanted to add and Toyota wanted to capitalize Forza's success

the way I see it, Toyota is acting like Peugeot lately, by selectively giving licenses, and from what I've gathered that the newest The Crew Motorfest will apparently have both the Supra and GR Supra, and even a Tacoma iirc
So it just convinces me that the Toyota seems to be very picky when it comes to what racing games they want to pick, even if it means they're had to lend over their license to **cough cough** F&F Crossroads of all games, which ironically also has police chases as well

Bro, Initial-D doesn't need flashy art, character or plot. Just simple good ol' Takumi racing every dude challenges him in the mountain. The simplicity and relatableness, make it charming and lovable. So this anime has so many redflag already to see it will be bad. Eye candy animation doesn't mean it's good. It's like this anime is compensating for something. The only reason I would watch this anime is probably only because of the HQ cars shown. Already got bad juju on this new anime.
Let's hope there are a lot of banger races not a lot of banger idols just talking crap.
Initial D on its own right in terms of car statistics and racing knowledge are all 99% factual, alongside it's great music, unique animation style, etc, it made for a one of a kind show. Plus, I would say the countless memes made from Initial D really did help solidify it's place in internet history; if you get a meme made from you on the internet, it's pretty much a guarantee that you'll be remembered for a VERY long time.
Toyota only doesn't want to be in games with illegal street racing.

Toyota didn't forbid street racing depictions in video games, they just got more expensive to license and pickier about who gets to license it or not (mostly because of the higher licensing fees)

It's literally the single most influental mecha anime in existance and one of the most profitable franchise up there with Pokemon and Star Wars.
I get that most normies cannot comperhend the importance of mecha and how influental it is in the anime industry. But, putting importance on Code Geass over Gundam in Sunrise is like saying Demon Slayer is big but paying no mind to One Piece or DBZ in Shonen Jump.

I'm personally pretty exited for this show, I love cars, I love music, I love cute boys, and from the teaser and music video it looks like this anime checks all the boxes, so hopefully it'll get an English sub so I can watch it when it comes out

i’ve almost never watched anime, and i’m just getting into it again after watching some initial D, i might have to watch this
definitely looks like an idol anime, the cars are just an interesting detail.
Going to school, having the spaz from the gas station for a best friend, a dad who makes you wake up really early, living in a little mountain village. All that stuff makes mountain pass racing to eurobeat at night more exciting. I don't care about pop artists who dress flashy and spend their days doing choreography. I've been into cars and bikes forever, most of us are basically dorks. Bikers a little less so.

cowboy bebop is an ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE im very happy to announce that this new car anime is in the hands of a master craftsman. (and unlike this one, cowboy bebop's 'space blues/galactic bebop' style is an absolute TRIUMPH of motion picture soundtracking.) i highly recommend you watch cowboy bebop while you wait for hi-drivers. the action, the writing, the world building, the music, the art style, the animation... its RIGHT up there with the masterpieces of studio ghibli. a timeless work of art. the story especially oh man...

if they can pull off the drivers being musicians as their job and race during the night without any singing during the racing scenes, it would be a great watch. If the attention to the detail around the cars and driving in the show are as good or better than Initial D was, it'll be one of the best racing anime.

Also, yes one of the main teams in the show are also a rock band. Their driver profile videos on the RUclips channel list their instruments along with their positions on the team (driver, mechanic, and so on).
The studio made the Love Live series from looking at the list, and it has a fairly huge fan base I believe. So I don't think the "musical" tag should be worrying anyone, I'm sure they know how to put it in without berating the viewer with it.
I would say this looks more like idol masters, Namco is making their games too

I just came to the MV because of the Acura NSXs (NA1 and NC1) seen in the videos.
(Don't go to me saying that it's called a "Honda NSX" over there, I KNOW IT'S CALLED A HONDA NSX IN JAPAN SINCE ACURA IS NOT IN JAPAN. I just like calling any NSXs and Integras, Legends or Euro Accord an Acura but I still consider them as Hondas.)
