A magnificant version of this very old song. Thanks, Colm. For other listeners, from Wikipedia: "According to the book The Makers of the Sacred Harp, by David Warren Steel and Richard H. I haven’t seen the film, so I came into this with only the expectation of another amazing Colm performance, but I did not expect the character that came with the song! We don’t know a thing about his circumstances, but we know everything we need to know from the look in his eye, the doggedness in his stride, and the confidence in his face. He’s going home. We have no cause to doubt him. “Well done” is an understatement for such a fine performance! Chills. Just chills.

I know you probably won't read this because the video is a year old, but on the off chance you do: I find the emotion you put into this astonishing. I hear desperation, fear and even a bit of anger, as well as hopless acceptance. Instead of a soothing deathbed song, it's like an glimpse into a wounded young soldier's last moments as he's trying to prepare for impending death. Which I can only assume is intentional. It's so intense I can't even listen to it too much. Chapeau.
My younger brother took inspiration from your singing and started trying to expand his range. He showed this to me two days ago and ive come back to it over and over again since to let the emotion behind the notes and lyrics move me.

This might be my favourite song you've done. Sleeping In The Cold Below is close, but this is so good. The deep voice at the start, and the younger sounding higher voice, like flashing back to a past self while your present self (the deeper voice) accepts their fate, hoping they'll end up home, with their father and mother. The little raspy breath at the end, slightly afraid, but steeling themself. Beautiful.

I heard my aunt sing this at my granny's funeral when I was a child and this sounds so much like my raising but with Colm's beautiful Irish accent. I am from Appalachia and the old spirituals were a part of my childhood. This touches my soul so deep.

OMG please try and do "We shall sail together", might sound impossible from the fact that the person singing sounds like a little girl, but you did the starting of "Hoist the colours" amazingly so I think you would nail it!
Full of Triumph, Resolve, and Power through and through. Loved it, new favorite rendition of this song. Feel like I went to Church and Battle simultaneously. 🍻 Another great job well done man.
Its kinda funny how i was introduced to this song. It was from a series on youtube where the main cast were anthro animals and the song was sung by the cast when they had to save a lynx from this ancient black substance that was slowly turning the lynx into a human. The whole lore was that the substance was contained years ago by some monkeys and im pretty sure a bird after nearly swallowing the world when the main cast were kids. Its an ongoing series last i checked, i just cant remember the name... edit: Series is called "No evil" By Betsy Lee.
I’ve watched this movie a few times now and can’t help but get teary-eyed because of the pure emotion of the song. To say that this cover did that entire movie justice is a damn understatement
Played this at my best friend's funeral, the first time properly listening to it since then tough doesn't describe it. He fell in love with your work and only showed him your videos a matter of weeks before he was killed, was fantastic to hear this played in the Church, wonderful to be done by a fellow Irishman.
Amazing cover your lows notes are on point and you high notes and at the end of the song just before you go back down to the low notes I know that's hard after all of those high notes but nothing is hard for you because your so dang good at what you do.
Can we all take a moment (or several) to just absorb that amazing, effortless, clean, vibrato. I know it doesn't always fit with the feel or style of a song, but that was some beautiful ear candy. Pardon me while I put this song on repeat for the next few hours.
This is bloody phenomenal, mate! I can just hear this rendition playing in some like post apocalyptic battle sequence or something. Which is to say that it is extremely epic! Well done!
I’ve watched this song about 15 times today, and the only complaint I have is I can’t add it to my regular playlist on Spotify. I love your music and your phenomenal voice, and I look forward to hearing more in the future!
Magnificent! I watch your videos from the shanty boom, and for almost every video I can say "damn, this is one of my favorite songs." It's amazing how cultural codes intersect across different parts of the world.
I got mad goosebumps! That was just as deeply desperate and as poignant as the film itself, which tbh was so utterly depressing but absolutely needed to have been made and reached all sorts of dark places in the soul and left a sad and frustrated taste in the mouth. Knitwear is on point my friend, was that a new addition? 😍👌🏻Loved it, all of it 💕✅

Ikr? All aboard the hype train
I heard my aunt sing this at my granny's funeral when I was a child and this sounds so much like my raising but with Colm's beautiful Irish accent. I am from Appalachia and the old spirituals were a part of my childhood. This touches my soul so deep.
That shudder at the end. Makes me tear up every time. I know Colm. I feel it too. This song hits a certain chord in this old soldier's heart as well.
I truly love not only listening to these videos but watching them. You're one of the few people i've seen who I can not only see the emotion in your face as you sing, but in your eyes as well. This may be one of my favorite videos/songs from you yet! Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to experience something this magical Colm.
Jaw dropped, goosebumps, tears shed. Was that good.
Into the small hours once more... At least it will be an awesome (if early) start to my Monday 😊
Colm's voice alone could push the enemies 10 trenches back! Awesome cover of an amazing movie!! 12/10*
OMG please try and do "We shall sail together", might sound impossible from the fact that the person singing sounds like a little girl, but you did the starting of "Hoist the colours" amazingly so I think you would nail it!
This is a folk song that I grew up with. It's nice to hear it covered in a very different manner than how I always heard it.
I swear every song this man touches turns to gold.
I'm just 15 and I never heard such a beautiful and high/ low singing it just lightens my life
Full of Triumph, Resolve, and Power through and through. Loved it, new favorite rendition of this song. Feel like I went to Church and Battle simultaneously. 🍻 Another great job well done man.
I love this song so much❣️ Can't wait to hear your version 😍 I know I'm going to cry 😢
I've got goosebumps, so beautiful❣️ Your range just blows my mind 🤪
The film _1917_ brought me here. :3. Plus, it's just a _REALLY_ good song. You _killed_ it with this one, Colm!! :3!!
So many strong voices in one man. You are awseome. need more of These Tracks on Spotify 😁
I discovered you 2 weeks ago.. And now I can't pass a single day without listenning you ! You're voice is amazing.. I'm truly in love with it !
Beautifully done, you brought me to tears brother.. 😢❤
Mr. McGuiness, you sir, are an absolute artist. I thoroughly enjoy your music and the way you perform it. Thank you!
Damn... the breath near the end after the high part before the last deep part. that got to me.
That shudder at the end really drives the nail in
Your version of this song never fails to bring a tear to my. Just beautiful!
Played this at my best friend's funeral, the first time properly listening to it since then tough doesn't describe it. He fell in love with your work and only showed him your videos a matter of weeks before he was killed, was fantastic to hear this played in the Church, wonderful to be done by a fellow Irishman.
That transition from high to low at the very end was amazing! Truly remarkable talent
This is the moment I want to hear Colm McGuinness and Rachel Hardy sing together
That little breath on the last repeat before the bass vocal comes back in. AMAZING.
Thank you so much! I’ve never been able to do vibrato before and really started learning how to do it this year, so that’s a huge relief! 🤜🤛
this song game me chills. this is one of my favorite versions for sure, but wow it popped up in auto play and I stopped walking dead in my tracks.
This is bloody phenomenal, mate! I can just hear this rendition playing in some like post apocalyptic battle sequence or something. Which is to say that it is extremely epic! Well done!
I don’t know the hell this doesn’t have 30 million views?!? It’s the best cover of this song I ever heard!
Seriously the best rendition of this I've heard. Amazing as always Sir. God Bless!!!
I’ve watched this song about 15 times today, and the only complaint I have is I can’t add it to my regular playlist on Spotify. I love your music and your phenomenal voice, and I look forward to hearing more in the future!
Man I am so hyped🔥 I discovered you through my brother the other day and I watched the God of War cover I was literally blown away 💯💯
Damn. That was a great assembly. Amazing percussion work. Haunting man.
It's my favourite audition song...such a nice surprise to hear it from you! Beautiful emotion here. Bravo again
Good lord. Shivers... and kudos on catching your breath enough to land that bass at the end. 👏 👏 👏.
😍👌🏻Loved it, all of it 💕✅
[Sees new McGuinness Premiere]
"Yay!"
[Realizes I work at noon tomorrow.]
"...Crap."
I'll enjoy it when I get the chance! It'll be stellar, I just know it!

"Yay!"
[Realizes I have a D&D session during the premiere]
... Crap!... but I reckon Colm would agree with my priorities.
Fist octave: Those some good bass notes:
Second octave: Solid. High baritone, probably Tenor. Nice range.
The last verse/chorus: … Why can that man hit THAT HIGH of a note????
Mind blown at the range. I am stunned. Well done!
