My dad helped organize the expeditions in the 2010’s that found the lost Franklin expedition when he worked with Jim Prentice. They got funding by the founder of Blackberry. Still have the research crew shirt he was given and this song is on a lot of my driving playlists. Great cover
Where can one learn more about this?
@@patrickheathcott2303 ruclips.net/video/qSno3quGH_U/видео.html they made this documentary soon after finding the Erebus, I don’t think one has been made after they found both ships though
What an amazing thing mate!!!!!!!!
Do not lose that shirt bro, and see if your old man can get you a job. Most would kill for that kind of connection
Yeah, they asked the Inuit and got led to the wrecks 😎
Proud Canadian here! This one rocks the core of my soul, and always has! Stan Rogers had the unique ability to capture the heart of every region of Canada in his verse, songs and ballads. He is dearly missed! 🇨🇦
As an American, I can happily say his net is cast farther than you think. I discovered Stan through the online sea shanty community, and I too have found myself singing along to his songs on many an occasion. The man was truly a legend, and I'm so glad to see firsthand that his songs are still being sung and spread to many more.
Fellow canadian, Check out the Dreadnaughts. They are also a Canadian band and even have a song about Stan thet is pretty good.
@@d4re416 I'll check them out for sure, thanks!
I'm Minnesotan, so halfway between the Americans and Canadians here lol
This is really good, but if you like rock or metal like me, you might wanna check out Dan Vasc's cover of the same song.
I can think of a lot of people who could cover this epic, but none better than you have. Thank you sir. Next barrett's privatters please...
Barrett's Privateers or Witch of the Westmoreland.
Agree with Barretts Privateers. 🙏
Concur. Barretts Privateers is a good song, but the message is sad.
Unleash the Archers has a good cover of this song if you haven't seen it before.
How about I wanna be in the Calvary
Excellent as always! Here’s to the Inuit hunters who knew where those ships were, and the Canadian researchers who listened to them.
For those that want to sing along:
Lyrics
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there 'twas said to lie
The sea route to the Orient for which so many died
Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones
And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland
In the footsteps of brave Kelsey, where his Sea of Flowers began
Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again
This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
And through the night, behind the wheel, the mileage clicking west
I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest
Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me
To race the roaring Fraser to the sea
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
How then am I so different from the first men through this way?
Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away
To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men
To find there but the road back home again
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
Great, now we can sing along!
Thank you so very much 💕
Just came home from a weekend at a friend's house. I open my laptop and see this. My family can testify: I gasped.
Do you think you would ever sing “green fields of France” or “Christmas 1915”? I think you would do an awesome job with either song!
Please god
Yes please!
Green fields of France would be incredible
Agreed
These are both great songs, and I would love to hear either of these.
Oh my goodness he’s finally covering it stay calm everybody
Edit: 'twas glorious. Worthy of Stan himself. Darn it Colm, you've got to stop being so good--I'm running out of room on my playlists, haha. ;)
Dont know how many times i asked for this
Stay Colm everybody*
@@eliasbogdo beat me to it xD
@@eliasbogdo Lol, touche. :D
Exactly!!
One of the saddest songs I know, is “Oh no, Not I” by Stan Rogers. I can’t listen to that song without crying.
I also recommend “The idiot” and “45 years”
PS I love this cover and I request more covers of Stan Rogers’ music.
I agree, The Idiot and 45 Years are excellent choices. I think Colm should do Mary Ellen Carter too.
@@Mr_T_Badger He also did one about a young lad being swept off a Laker and drowned during a squall. Can't remember the name, but it will tear your heart out. Then there is fogarty's cove, watchin the apple grow and of course. Field behind the plow..
@@nickvandergragt653 The first song you describe is called "White Squall". Cheers from a big German Stan Rogers Fan ☺
White squall will tear your heart out. Love your other suggestions as well.
Also, "Lies".
Wonderful tribute to Stan Rogers, who was sadly taken far too early. Would love to hear you do a cover of Barett's Privateers and other of his greats.
Someone tweet this to Stans son he would love to see how his fathers works are honoured
I’d really appreciate that! 🤜🤛
I was having a crappy morning...UNTIL I SAW THIS, FANTASTIC
Oh sweet, a Canadian classic. This is gonna be epic!!
This isn't just the story of a voyage across the northwest passage, this is the story of Canada.
Absolutely stunning rendition, your voice really gives the story the gravitas it deserves.
I've never heard this song before but it still brings a sense of nostalgia in a way I'm not sure many else could achieve.
Never heard this song before, love it ! The North West Passage - that would be an epic adventure, didn’t make it in real life but I let the song take me through it ⚓️⛵️
You should do barrets privateers next
Oh hell yeah
Absolutely! I love that song, god damn them all.
My grandfather who served in ww2 loves the song he turned 100 on july 4th
@@jordyncollier919 watch your language. You're acting like a broken man on a Halifax pier.
@@NickThorbjørnsen2207 you'll never find a better man far or near.
Colm, truly, this was beautifully done. I've been singing to Stan Roger's music since I was a small child and my family is still sad about his passing. In normal years there's a Stanfest up in Nova Scotia each summer. There would be a lot of folks attending that would really enjoy your music.
Ooooh, that sounds amazing! Would love to attend when the world gets a little more back to normal! 🙏
@@ColmRMcGuinness That's definitely something I could get behind, as a Nova Scotian!
@@ColmRMcGuinness Understandably, they're not meeting yet this year, but here's their website! www.stanfest.com/
Be advised, Nova Scotia in the summer is breathtakingly beautiful...but *COLD*. Come ready!
@@ColmRMcGuinness Get over here. The world will never be normal so don't wait for that.
Coming back to this is a treat. I definitely prefer this over the metal version. It's somber and nostalgic in a way that any good story should. The metal version is great for a party, but the original is for when you come home and remember those you've lost
Now that you've covered this so beautifully, I'm wondering if you might cover Rolling Down to Old Maui 😍
Another proud Canadian here. Love what you’ve done with Stan’s iconic song. I agree with other comments, please do Barrett’s Privateers!
You've done Stan proud 🇨🇦
Thanks for covering this iconic Canadian. Stan was a hero too.
Stan Rogers would be honored by this. Gone far too early, but always living within the hearts and minds of true folk music lovers. Amazing job as always, Colm! Go raibh an ghaoth go brách ag do chúl!
This man nails it. I cannot express how excellent this is. I grew up listening to Stan Rogers, and this cover just gets it all right. Thank you Mr. McGuinness.
A song by my Favourite Musician ever? Yes please!
Favorite Stan Rogers song ❤🇨🇦
Edit: I'm not crying, it's just my allergies
I was recently thrilled to find, of all things, an illustrated children’s book to these lyrics. It has images of Stan driving across Canada in muted watercolors.
I would also love to see Colm do more covers of Stan’s music. “The Mary Ellen Carter” is my theme song, “White Squall” was my introduction to Stan’s music not including the many times I sang along to “White Collar Holler” on the Dr. Demento show.
The Due South series led me to this song but this is by far one of the best versions of it.
Same here. I’ve loved this song ever since I saw that episode back in the ‘90s and I’m really glad I found this version.
I have heard many attempts to do this song, but you have captured it! Stan would approve !! And I with Nick Vandergragt, "Barret's Privateers" please!
Oh I'm so hyped for this one.
This one is special for all of us who love the water and the road. Thanks, Colm!
Thank you so much for covering classical Canadiana!!!!
Due South finale, I've seen all those years before and "Terror" novel I've read recently brought me here... Nice performance!
When you get chills two seconds into a video, you know it's gonna be a good one.
I'm a big Stan Rogers fan and you have more than done him justice here. Well done, sir.
Oooooooooh yes pls.
Edit: Fantastic. All the feels of the original, and the instrumentation adds even more!
As a Canadian this song touches me and Stan was a Canadian.
🇨🇦 the world really is just a community....your songs always grab my heart and soul and squeeze out a tear or two.....❤
Once again painting a musical picture on our hearts!! Really loved the harmonies in this one. Just exquisite!
no matter what this man covers, it'll always be an absolute banger, sometimes even a tear jerker
I've listened to this four times this morning already...
Love the cute one on the right taking a sip of coffee in the middle of the song 😉
I love dear old stan
Another Dreadnoughts fan, I see.
@@TheRealSkeletor Yessir, and Stan is just a good artist.
Amazing vocals, amazing instrumentals, amazing harmonies I just love what you do I can listen to you all day and I do and I'll never stop but keep up the great work can't wait for more covers to come.
Looking forward to this! Also a shanty suggestion, Roll The Old Chariot by David Coffin, I think you could absolutely crush it!
And Bully in the Alley by Kimber's Men!
I really look forward to your premieres Colm, your work ethic is amazing, for the recording of the songs, the harmonies and instrumental parts, wow you are a musical genius and the Goddess (Saint) Bridget looks upon you with blessings for the beauty of your voice. Bright blessings from me, her Priestess, too. X
I can't love this enough. I grew up listening to Stan Roger's music.
…can’t wait… this will be spectacular on the ears!!!
Colm's YT channel now has *17.8M views over 102 videos with 139,000 subscribers!* At the peak today, there were 266 good folks watching the **PREMIERE** of The Northwest Passage (Stan Rogers) Cover. Beautiful rendition Colm!
You are actually my best discovery of 2021! I like your covers very much. As french, I can only suggest To France from the great Mike Oldfield & the ethereal Maggie Reilly. It could be wonderful to hear this song by a low masculine voice...
Eyyy thanks so much, mate! I’ll have a look at it! 🙏
I also found him this year and I have started to listen to him every day.
I love this ballad . He is good.
perfectly done! rouses the spirit as the song was written to do!
Simply wonderful Colm. Thank you for your hard work and for tackling a full on song! You did it more than justice, and I continue to hear each of your releases on YT as a boon to my day as the days are still challenging. Much appreciated :).
You know it really can be a great song when you think about memorial for The guys who died on that expedition. Especially when you see their faces, Not even yet skeletonized for the few officers buried.
Don't know the original song but given these comments you have done it justice once again. Love the work and can't wait for the next one.
You bloody bastard... I've no bulwark against gd harmonies of this calibre. Damn you Sir, and the gods bless your video productionn skills ,and your vocal chords(they sang all the parts! )I hope you go far :)...
.What a skills set! Try not to get lost. Remember who you are.💗
Another exceptional cover song....some of your many songs are so relaxing and haunting, its all one needs to listen too reduce, stress, tension and anxiety....keep them coming!🙂🙂🙂
Beautiful song..., first heard it on Due South..., this is by far my favorite version I've heard.
This was the first version of the song I heard. Having just heard the original, you covered it beautifully. It’s a true master piece.
I adored Stan Rogers and this is the first cover to do this song (and Stan) justice. I'm in tears.
If only i had mates to sing with, this would be a great song to sing with them
One of my favorite songs, and you’ve covered it beautifully. Thank you!
I have loved every single one your videos that i've seen. They're all so good! Ty for existing and sharing your voice
Dear Mr. McGuiness,
if heart your song , wich original if`ve first heart in the serial "Due South". In that times the song triggers me. And your kind of performence is a very special and precious variriety of this Canadian Song. Thank you so much and go ahead (like your song ´Oh Shanandoa`, wich I sang as a young german midshipman, take my duty in the german navy). Thank You
I've never listened to Stan Rogers' music, and I don't know much about what the song is referencing, but I can't listen to this without breaking down in tears, and I'm not really sure why. There's so much emotion and heart in it that I can't help feeling sad and wistful and lonely and a bit nostalgic, and I can't for the life of me figure out why it's hitting me so hard. But it is, and it's beautiful, and clearly I need to look up more of Rogers' songs.
Y'know, I feel sort of the same way. This song makes me think really hard about my life, moving from one country to another, even though I've never even stepped foot in Canada. I think it's this shared desire for exploration and meaning, but also an acknowledgement that we're blessed with the shoulders of giants who came before. We don't have to worry about dying from Scurvy or starving to death when we go long distances, because people like Kelsie, Franklin and Thompson came before us. It's this beautiful wisdom that we aren't so different, since we seek the same thing- a better life, be it by gold or glory- but at the same time, their sacrifices have made it easier for us to follow. At the end of all journies, we find the same thing behind us. A road back home again.
Oh this is gonna be good!
I stan for Stan Rogers. This lifted my spirits so much! Beautiful! Anyone who doesn't know the source material should also go check it out. RIP, Stan. What a tribute this is!
The Canadian in me couldn't help but sing along. This is so well done! Makes me miss home.
Yet another brilliant song by my favorite RUclips bard!
Very nice, always happy and looking forward to your new works
I'd be completely blown away if you did "The Cruel Wars" next, I think it would fit your style and voice quite well
Stan and Nathan can both be damn proud of this offering. Good on you mate.
Beautiful! Your videos always make my day.
This is my favorite cover of the song, ever.
And this is now my favorite singer.
Love from Canada 🇨🇦
The first time I heard this song years ago when researching the Franklin Expedition I cried. Today I cried again listening to this. Thank you for this absolutely beautiful cover.
Love the song..... seriously amazing, but the coffee cup slurp killed me. Well done sir, brilliant!!
This is Everything. My heart is too full to say more.
A well deserved tea break, that. Fabulous, as always! This Canadian approves. :)
This is my favorite of your songs! I keep coming back to it.
Wow this gives me goosebumps! Fantastic cover! 🇨🇦
Yesss this cover is so good!! Love from Canada!
Oh yes! I love this song!!😆
What a wonderful video to pop up on my birthday! I grew up listening to Stan Rogers with me father.
Happy birthday, mate! 🙏
When I was a kid one of my neighbours had served on the Saint Roche the RCMP patrol vessel that was the first to actually sail through the Northwest Passage.
GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS
THANK YOU
nearly cried
From Elkford BC - right off the Fraser Valley!
I'm a huge fan of both Stan's and your music, so this was awesome to find! You did an amazinf job, I'm sure dear old Stan would've loved it 💙
Hooray I got a notification this time! 😊 Apparently 10 hours after every one else... But at least I have one. Looking forward to seeing what magic you infuse into this one
I'm extremely particular with some covers of childhood songs. I have to say Colm, this cover is my 1 of 2 favorite covers of this song. The other being Northwest Passage by Unleash the Archers. 10/10 Colm. Amazing job my friend.
One year I was literally pouring over topographic maps of North America looking for a chain of lakes and rivers. I had something in mind. I was going to to canoe across Canada! But that project ended up dead in the water! Not enough time...but this song recalls a fond memory.
This makes me proud to be Canadian...and I'm American.
I love this song and you’ve done such a wonderful job of it. Well done.
Awesome as always. This piece made me stare outside and smile and daydream while listening.
Lovely rendition, your voice is a great match for this one. Thanks Colm!
Please consider doing Oak, Ash and Thorn - you will certainly nail it.
Another good fit would be Come out ye black and tan...
Salut from FRG.
I hold this one very special to me and I loved it very much thank you!
Ahhhh...Heavenly 😌👌
Please....I hope I‘m able to watch the premiere!
Wow, wonderful....did not know you sang this song. Nicely done. Thank you
