History has lied in saying Sirens were just women.
Male sirens used to be a thing, from wikipedia: "Originally, Sirens were shown to be male or female, but the male Siren disappeared from art around the fifth century BC"
if it's a male siren, it's a horn.
@@JayCawb Sirens were originally half bird (not half fish), and definitely *not* male. Never use Wikipedia unless you look at the external sources. That said, sirens were sea nymphs, and all nymphs were female (specifically nature goddesses) in Greek Mythology. This is why I say sirens were never male.
I am not sure what you would call a male siren. Though, when you try to look it up, Google says a male "siren" is a trition (a merman), but as I said, sirens were half bird, not half fish. So, tritions are not actually the male version of sirens; originally, that is.
For some reason, around 1,000 years ago or less, sirens became the same thing as mermaids, so that's probably way tritions are seen as male sirens. Perhaps, it's because sirens are sea nymphs and somehow they became exclusively half-fish people, despite sea nymphs don't actually have to be fish related at all.
Lol. Greek Mythology and it's influence can be very confusing at times.
@@meganlodon You're absolutely right, but to clear up where the male variant could have come from, so a Nokk in a lot of sources is described as a male siren, which here siren is classified only as a water creature, (and nokk is lake specifically) that seduces people into water through music. Or just sexy self. female variants of Nokk though, being Nixies, river mermaid. There's also the story of queen melinoe's children, the siren with two fish or serpent tails and falcon or bat wings. Her children could be male or female. Nokk is scandinavian, melinoe is french. Neither of them are sirens in the old traditional sense, but their influences could have bled into modern interpretation.
it's very likely their influence bled into modern interpretation, actually, with the different sailors interacting with different cultures quite heavily around 1,000 years ago.

I hope that link comes through but that is a Greek vase depicting a male bird-siren.
Also, most of what you typed is also explained on Wiki.
'When Maester Aemon heard him sing, he said his voice was honey poured over thunder.'
THE BEARD GRANTS HIM POWER. ALL HAIL THE BEARD.
That is a fine beard!!
That is an ok beard, but he could totally grow a powerful beard
This. Absolutely this. Never, ever shave it.
@@dune_strider3055 I read that as “an oak beard” and didn’t blink at the idea that some culture of the Isles has a beard ranking/grading system inspired by trees. #JustDruidThings ? I even began musing if yew or rowan beards were the pinnacle.

Alright, fine - let's go crush some White Walkers!
And crushed my heart with his wonderful voice...
I'm a fan of yours Stephen. Looks like we like similar things. Lol
My thoughts exactly Stephan! I swear, if Christianity was full of nothing but folk music like this instead of spirituals, I might be a born-again convert! :)
Wow! Didn't expect my worlds to collide like this!
**grabs Needle**
Came across you by accident.
And I'm never disappointed!
Me too, accidents happens
Same. Thank gods for this.
true fact!!!
Same blew me out of the water!
You could say you "never wanted to leave"
You could play Rhaegar Targaryen who sings this in the books. As they say in the books his voice was honey poured on thunder.
I'm German so I can't even understand all of that, but it sounds so beautiful. Please never quit singing.
I don't know any German, and IK this is a year old but
I just got the lyrics translated for ya man.
Wirbelten all ihren Kummer und Schmerz weg
dunno if this is accurate
@@swvwc8393 This is mostly accurate and gramatically ok, though there are some parts that sound a bit strange or are just gramatically wrong. Any German would understand it and if you just want to know what the lyrics mean, it's fine. I'd guess it's a ChatGPT translation, right?
Btw: The strangest thing is, that "Jenny" was translated as "Jenne", which isn't a German name while Jenny is the standard short-form for "Jennifer", which is a common name here (and it's pronounced similar as it is in english).
@swvwc8393 since I am a german teaching english I'll try and smooth the edges a bit, semantically speaking
Drehten all ihren Kummer und Schmerz davon
Und sie wollte niemals gehen
Wollte niemals gehen
Wollte niemals gehen
Wollte niemals gehen
If I were your neighbor my ears would be glued to the wall all the time. I just wish I had people around me singing songs like these - with a voice like yours! Amazing work.
Came here for shanties, stayed for the voice and your amazing range from bass to tenor!
Mission Complete +Respect
Hahaha, yesterday I was thinking "What will he sing next, Jenny Oldstones or Rains of Castamere would be perfect..." :D Thanks man, outstanding.
Holy shit, Rains of Castamere, yes please.
Rains Of Castamere would sound amazing 😶
OMG yes, "The Rains of Castamere" please
Then "If I Had a Heart"
Maybe "The Hanging Tree"?
@@SGWARPIG the hanging tree, I forgot about that one! An individual of culture you are
Rains of Castamere? Oh yes please!
I listened to Podricks Version on the show and it has been an absolute beautiful scene. Then I listened to Florence version, but I never found a male version of the song. When the notification popped up, I have been speechless for some seconds, now I'm here and I'm not disappointed at all. Your voice fits this far better than I thought. Keep up the great work!
Peter Hollens has a cover of this as well
Florence cover is rubbish. They chose the worst person for the cover. Podricks version is and always will be the best. Wish he would release it. This cover though, second best. Just beautiful.
Please do “The Rains of Castamere”
I came to say the same thing.

Absolutely loving the little Irish lilt I'm hearing on this song. And oh how the range never ceases to impress.
High in the halls of the kings who are gone
Jenny would dance with her ghosts
The ones she had lost and the ones she had found
And the ones who had loved her the most
The ones who'd been gone for so very long
She couldn't remember their names
They spun her around on the damp old stones
Spun away all her sorrow and pain
And she never wanted to leave, never wanted to leave
Never wanted to leave, never wanted to leave
They danced through the day
And into the night through the snow that swept through the hall
From winter to summer then winter again
'Til the walls did crumble and fall
And she never wanted to leave, never wanted to leave
Never wanted to leave, never wanted to leave
And she never wanted to leave, never wanted to leave
Never wanted to leave, never wanted to leave
High in the halls of the kings who are gone
Jenny would dance with her ghosts
The ones she had lost and the ones she had found
And the ones
Who had loved her the most

You are a legend
It's crazy how good lyrics were back in the days of dragons and white walkers.
Please more Games of Thrones songs! I think you just nailed this one and would love more!
This man's voice...is enchanting. Him and his fiance both. They leave me relaxed and a warm feeling in my bones, even with the saddest songs.
Man, “never wanted to leave” makes me cry!
You are awesome
Amazing! i'd love to hear song of Durin from you!
Man, your voice is just... Is it possible to fall in love with a voice ???
I got full body goose bumps at that depth, wide eyes and shocked
Just goosebumps and playing in a 24h loop
You're voice never ceases to amaze me!!!
Now I don't drink, but if I did frequent a pub, you're the kind of man I'd beg for a song. Absolutely breathtaking. Not just talent but also real soul in your singing and that is rare nowadays. People today think 'real music' is all about genre, but in my opinion genre has little to do with it but rather the soul of the artist performing. And you sir have it!
How tf does your voice sound so natural across such a wide range? I can't get over it 🤯
I could literally listen to his voice on endless repeat. It's so relaxing and giving me chills at the same time. Honestly just wish this was on spotify so I could ACTUALLY always have it on repeat
I have repeated this vid an unhealthy ammount of times and u wont find any regrets in my head
This is great! The only thing missing now is Rains of Castamere!
Please!
I agree!
You right
That song is SO perfect for your voice!!! 😍
Most excellent, your vocal range blows me away. I am so glad I found your channel!
What sort of devilish pact did you make to be blessed with such a voice... I'm shaking.
One of the best covers I have heard, it captures the same feel when Pod sang it in the episode
When I heard pod sing this I kept rewinding the scene so pleasing and now I keep rewatching this cuz also so pleasing
This man really needs to stop being so freaking talented. His voice is literally ethereal.
All I need now is a lullaby from Colm and I can get back to sleeping at night. ❤️

idk why but this just made me cry. Awesome work! Keep it up man you are amazing.
This is just just majestic. This is such s spellbinding cover of this song. Feels like I was transported to the world of ASOIAF/GOT. I feel like I’m listening to a trope of triplet bards! 😅
Man! I', out of words. 3 times i was sure that You've blasted that final gear but there was more to come. You build that arrangement on so many levels! I've checked original version only to make sure it sounds flat now. And as it was already pointed out in comments, Your version sounds much more authentic then original! They used those pads, piano, some CelineDionLike glisters, and somehow... You still have more dimension? And that rasp, and strength... Nnow that piece has balls of its own. Man, if they used your version they would have to f*** sniff those walkers. That's not an army. That's natures... dandruff...
Absolutely beautiful. Its rare to bring a tear to my eye but somehow your voice does it with a level of frequency that is stunning. Please keep up the absolutely wonderful work.
I’m currently reading a book about a small town Renaissance Festival. Your voice is now in the soundtrack in my head. Your songs fit perfectly with the theme of the book.
The best damn voice in Westeros!
Um...you misspelled "World"
I honestly cried listening to this song
The voice of Rhaegar like honey over thunder ... no wonder the princely bard is well remembered.
I'm not crying! You're crying! Unbelievably beautiful. Another great song, Colm!
I just played this again after more than a year and my cat came running, started purring and is now laying next to me making biscuits in the air while the song is on repeat. ❤️
Your range is unbelievable... respect! Sounded amazing.
This song always makes me want to cry, I understand not wanting to leave your ghosts
I feel you. Keep strong
They spun her around on the damp old stones
Spun away all her sorrow and pain
And she never wanted to leave, never wanted to leave
and i suddenly have tears running down my chin. Thanks to your incredible voice.
A sudden relief of old feelings it seems. Song was on repeat for the last 2 hours, it really did feel great and neccesary.
I got realy goos bumps when I heard this, it's unbelievably great
One of my favorite songs from Game of Thrones! Awesome job! I think either Song of the Seven or Last of the Giants would be marvelous for your voice! Thanks for all the great music.
Absolutely astonishing. There are no words for how amazing this sounds.
You would do Rains Of Castamere so much justice. I subbed when I watched your Hoist The Colours video out of curiosity. I think many of your subscribers would love to see Rains Of Castamere tbh.
What an amazing rendition! I was talking with my 17 yo son last week about chest voice vs throat voice vs head voice and this cover demonstrates it PERFECTLY!
As someone whose voice is more suited to the Celtic myself ... this is one of the songs right up my lane.
I think I listen to this version of the song for at least 50 times and everytime I get the chills. I baw to you
Ever since I found you sir, you've made me. A natural alto. Feel more confidence in my voice that I've started singing more and more. I couldn't find the confidence that I could have a beautiful sounding voice. Then...you. Thank you for your...well everything. May the Hall forever ring with your voice.
This song gave me chills and I actually teared up. Beautiful.
Im crying 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 thats the most beautiful voice I ever heard

Can you do Rains of Castamere? I think that would be awesome.
Not gonna lie, i have to play this on repeat because its that good. lol
Wow.. just wow. This one hit me hard, this sir you absolutely nailed. Beautiful..

Hey Colm have you heard of Malukah she does alot of stuff like this bet you guys would make decent match up if yall collaborate on something jus sayin might be fun ....wow really dig the practice bit you did at the end that was cool
I've been subbed to her for nearly a decade! That'd be like crossing off a youtube goal haha.
Game of Thrones is one of those pop cultural touchstones that, for whatever reason, has 100% passed me by. So I have zero context for this song.
All I know is that it's beautiful.
I get goosebumps from so many of your songs. Undeniable, amazing talent.
Something in my chest, like I've never felt.. I can't breathe. So profoundly beautiful, how do you do this?
I CANNOT listen to any other version or cover of this song since I heard you sing it! It's so beautiful it makes me want to cry 🥰, you have an excellent voice man! 👍🏾

I wish I could like this video as many times as I’ve listened to it, Colm would be a Grammy winner, as deserved.
I've been coming back to this cover over and over since you posted it. I've not watched GoT but this song makes me want to - but I know I'd be disappointed when it's not your versions of the songs 😂

The fireplace scene when this song pops up is the best scene of the series. The warriors sitting around a fire, having a drink on the eve of battle... RIGHT. IN. THE. FEELS.
the memories came flooding back
This version is so dark. I love it!
I know all of these cover videos are getting demonetized, but I just want to encourage you to continue making these types of videos simply because you are amazing at your craft. I recently found your channel and haven't been able to stop listening to your music and covers ever since :)
