    5 Personality Traits Associated With Chronic Illness (From The Myth of Normal by Dr. Gabor Maté)
    Suppressing our own emotions and abandoning our needs can lead us to internalize our pain and exacerbate illness of the mind, body, and spirit.
    In his book, The Myth of Normal (pgs. 101-102), Dr. Gabor Maté shares the five personality traits shared in this video that he found in his clinical experience and research to be associated with chronic illnesses. This does not mean the personality traits are causal - the observation suggests that there is a correlation and that individuals who self-suppress and/or repress may be at higher risk of developing these conditions.

    As I listen to this list, I hear you describe my fundamentalist family and friends belief systems with women's roles. I do think when we are raising a family, from small children into young adults it is a given to be more serving of the ones we love close...but the rest of our life, or parts of it at any time, it is not. It is important to evolve in your life, and I hope my friends and family will do that someday. But very interesting - many of them have chronic illnesses too. I do not, and I make it my own business to evolve my philosophies, spirituality, and diet of information. No junk food information is at the top, including propaganda driven confirmation bias content. It is hard to evaluate what is your own confirmation bias....but so important.

      Thank you for sharing this! Such an insightful comment and appreciate the note on the challenges separating out our own confirmation biases. I used to be very black-and-white with my thinking and thought there was a right and wrong for everything - it led me down a path to severe restriction and anxiety about most things in life. I also internalized and my own illness manifested as anorexia. Adopting a beginner's mind and detaching from "Truths" (in religion and in science) has helped me to maintain loose attachments to beliefs, curiosity, and openness to being "wrong." Always a work in progress! What helps you? How did you decide to detach from what you have observed and been surrounded by?
