This is a really thorough video, I appreciate the clarification about frost hardiness between French and English lavender, and showing how not to cut back a young plant too much!
Thanks Figaro! Im glad it’s useful. I often find other guides are either too brief or filmed so far away you can’t see what’s happening with the pruning cuts! Happy gardening. Lee 🥷🤘🌿
Hey Roy! Yes Barry literally wouldn’t leave me. It’s been a while since we’ve been able to get out and about with the weather. Hope you’re getting some breaks in the rain to garden. 🥷🤘🌿
A very timely video Lee. I have just been pruning my English lavender this afternoon. I didn't get round to doing it when it stopped flowering, basically because it didn't seem to stop this Summer, it was only before Christmas when we got the cold snap that it went dormant. I made the most of the sunshine today before more rain arrived and I had a bit of a tidy up. Thankfully I did only take the top off the lavender as you said. I have had lavender plants for years now and it's only after a good few years that I replace them, they do eventually start to look woody and bare at the bottom. I use the trimmings for cuttings to replace the plants as they get old.
Hi Liz. Great to hear from you! Kindred spirits me and thee pruning at the same time. The weather patterns certainly play havoc with flowering. I’ll be propagating these when I need more in a few years. May do a vid on that too to help show people! Thanks for the comment and happy gardening. 🥷🤘🌿
Thanks very much for doing this vlog. I have loads of English lavender in my front garden that was planted before I moved in. It's a new build, and I must admit the front garden was low in priority when I moved in 4 years ago. Last year was the first year that I actually had to trim it, cause its got so big nearly up to my thighs. I had to take hedge cutters to them. I probably did take off more than suggested, but it did start to grow again after I trimmed it, so at least I know I didn't kill it. It does look gorgeous when It's all flowering.
Hey Janine! Great to hear from you. A late trim is better than none. You’ll repeat the rewards by pruning like you have done. I bet you’re also looking at the front thinking what else can I squeeze in??! 😉🥷🌿🤘
@Garden Ninja: Lee Burkhill I do have other shrubs in there. It's only very small at the front. I am concentrating on landscaping the garden and that's a huge garden. Hopefully I'll get it finished this year and be able to enjoy it more.
Hi Paul. The most harsh will be English lavender NOT FRENCH. As they have a higher threshold for our northern scouse winters! 😉 For a strong smell you just need volume. Ie plenty of them and some hot sunny Liverpool bay weather. 🥷🤘🪴😂
Thanks for the reminder! I left my lavender this fall because the bees and pollinators were all over it. Yesterday, I noticed the plants are looking scruffy, so it's time for their annual pruning. The other step I take on my larger plants is to feel around the edges to see if any of the outer branches have settled in the soil and are trying to root in. I cut those off as they really mess with the plant's shape.
Hey Candace. Looks like our garden chores have synchronised! Great tip re the older branches. When these lavenders of mine get a bit older I’ll do some cuttings videos to show how you can keep regenerating them! 🥷🤘🌿
You have a very attentive border terrier assistant although he does appear to be keeping an eye out for squirrels and other intruders. I will have to give my lavender some attention when it begins to warm up in a month or so.
Thank you for some wonderful info. I have a wisteria tree and love the blossums and was wondering if it is wise and profitable to train some of the branches onto a trellis to extend the growth over the top of some other scrubs.
I have what I think is a French lavender plant. It’s October and the purple flowers are still in bloom but it’s getting quite unwieldy and woody. Should I cut it all back?!
Prune them is not my problem. I had a scaffold around my house and wasn't allowed into my garden since second week of last September. A video about 'How to find your lavenders and other plants and bulb-plants ' would be great 🙂
@@Gardenninja Oh I can't wait for gardening season. I've already prepared a container and filled it up with soil for the garlic cloves. Will be seeding different tomatoes and cucumbers indoors this week, so by the time I plant them out they are not too small. This year I'm ready and hungry 🙂
Yes you could but they do need full sun. So the side nearer the wall, fence or house it’s hung against will probably not grow very well. I’d stick to annuals and alpines for hanging baskets. 🥷🤘🌿 Lee Garden Ninja
Finally someone who explains well and thorougly! Subbed.

I will follow you'r advise and I think that my lavender will not look zo wild anymore.
And...you have a cute dog.
So nice of you! Enjoy your newly pruned neat lavenders! 🥷🌿🤘

He’s such a good garden dog Harold! Can’t wait for the garden to warm up a bit too! Happy gardening. 🥷🤘🌿
Excellent - thank you 👍
Happy New Year! Is this the year I become a gardener? 😊
Yes yes yes it is!! 🥷🤘🌿🤣

Hi. Only cut back to green growth not old wood as they won’t regenerate. Nip off all the spent flowers to tidy them up and they should be fine. 🥷🤘🌿
Prune them is not my problem. I had a scaffold around my house and wasn't allowed into my garden since second week of last September. A video about 'How to find your lavenders and other plants and bulb-plants ' would be great 🙂
Hey Libelle. Oh gosh! Well I’m sure when spring comes those shoots will present and you can reacquaint yourself with your lovely plants. 🥷🤘🌿🥰
