The cool thing about Luke is that he would watch this and simply compliment the other guys and say how much fun it was. Never the guy in the room to point to his own playing, only to say how much better he feels other players are. Luke isn’t into competition. He’s into the conversation of the music and the spirit of the exchange as far as good vibes go. Few players on the planet can compete...but he’s never in a competition. The boy just loves to play and serve the music.
Both truly amazing guitarists. Just found a vid on here called 'Vivien Campbell and friends ', which led me to this..... it shows Viv absolutely shining as a guitarist and artist, something you don't really see of him anymore. Two talents here that should be treasured.
As a big Vivian fan from the holy diver and last in line days..Vivian was patient but kinda lazy..luke played with some nasty mean chops..the style Vivian had on holy diver..if this was a contest? Luke wins
I'm also a big Vivian fan from the old Dio days and I think Viv got the better since he played a bluesier solo while Luke ( who I also love ) went crazy and over the top even using tapping.
Fun fact: Luke was tapped, at one point in the late nineties, to produce a Def Leppard disc. It didn't work out due to timing circumstances. But could you imagine what that would have sounded like? Also, I believe that is Tony Franklin ( The Firm, Blue Murder, etc. ) on bass.
I like both Luke and Vivian, but both can play way way better than in that clip. Rock guitarists tend to play at their worst when soloing over blues classics. It's as if they feel compelled to showcase all their techniques in one single solo rather than something melodic, tasteful and memorable. G3 is the perfect example of this.
Idk man, I’m a guitarist myself and have been playing for years, the shit that those two guys just pulled off (Luke especially!) is just insane! That video maybe doesn’t show everything they can do, but is still damn impressive especially Luke with the harmonic tapping and the tapping up and down the strings like that?!? C’mon man so impressive, shit like that is what makes guitar playing so unique. Vivian is fantastic as well, tbh I thought he played pretty melodic here and it showcased himself in that style a lot. He was fantastic with Dio and I’m a huge fan, this video is nothing short of spectacular
I love both Luke and Vvian. I don't know i9f they knew each other prior to this gig or not. Why is Viv playing one of Luke old Valley Arts guitars. While Vivian who is a shredder ppalys bluesy licks acoording to the fitting the song, Luke seems to be on steroids and shreds like there is know tomorrow. He had already had this reaction in an old gig in Japan with Carlos Santana and Jeff Beck. Why?
Steve Luka is just ... just the boss

crazy Luke with his intense solos
what a killer band ... Carmine Appice on drums, Tony Franklin on bass, looks like Vivian is playing one Steve's old Valley Arts guitars with EMGs.
Luke in my opinion is the best player ever and has inspired me since I started playing

Dave King on vocals of Fastway and Katmandú.Steve Lukather awesome!
Yeah and 2 thirds of Blue Murder also.
LUKATHER ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Luke!!!
Steve Lukather wow man, he can play whatever he wants.
incredible
a master
When was this? Judging by the Lukather mullet index and the skeleton Valley Arts guitar, I am guessing late 1989 to early 1990.

The lead singer looks like a combination of Robert Plant and Ginger from The Wildhearts.
it's the singer from Fastway.
Robert Plant and Ian Anderson
Still trying figure out how this is a tribute to Les Paul.

merci :)
also Carmine Appice on the drums (Blue Murder too)
LUKE!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's not a contest onstage, it's just great music.
Nobody questions the red and white drum motif until you see a KFC bucket next to it.
Viv's out of his element here, and he's playing Luke's Valley Arts!
TONY FRANKLIN! CARMINE APPICE! BLUE MURDER!
Steve Lukather win
Looks like Viv is playing one of Luke's VA's

I agree I saw it happen with Neal Schon when he plays the blues.

@@deanadams2656 - I am also a guitarist and Luke is one of my favourite guitarists for what’s it’s worth.

BTW this was a Leo Fender tribute not Les Paul.
BTW this was a Leo Fender tribute not Les Paul.
Because he wants and he can.
Luke is strong in the ways of the (frenetically finger fast fret) Force.
I like both guitarists, but Steve blew Viv away on this old recording.
suskrep ke aku! Kalau ada penampilan bak Fatim dan yik Husen di tempat ini bos
Vivían the best el mejor y mejor
suskrep ke aku! ;) Gw gak pernah dapet, padahal gw gak pernah boyah
Campbell wins on this jam.
Luke !!!
maxluke72 oh ... of course that’s the ONLY reason I watched this video. Never heard of the singer... meh.... only to see HOT Luke! 😆
