Windy Wild Camp on the Border Ridge & a Trangia Masterclass

- After parking at Hethpool in the College Valley, I set off on the St Cuthbert's Way to the English Scottish border for a solo wild camp.
After exploring the area close to the border I pitched my MLD Trailstar on the English side, I then cooked mince and dumplings with a French twist on my Trangia 27.
Despite a favourable forecast of light winds, the winds became increasingly strong with some extreme gusts during the night and into the early morning. Unfortunately a massive gust of wind literally flattened my shelter and snapped the trekking pole in half. Luckily I had just stepped out of the shelter to break camp.
A dramatic end to an amazing summer wild camp.

Wowza them dumplings looked so nice. I have to say you put that trailstar through its paces. It took a battering but you looked sheltered and just make it out at the right time. A good memory made as I always say in conditions like that.
@@MarkOutdoors_ cheers Mark. Yeah, surprising how bad it got in the morning. Certainly wasn’t forecast. Good fun though. Different story in the winter when it’s cold and wet as well. 🤣

I really wish I had the foresight and determination to plan, prepare, carry and cook a meal like this when Im camping! You set a very high standard! Thanks for sharing!

Trailstar took a beating there man. Impressed with how it handled the wind though. Reckon if youd of had a lower pitch it would of just took it like a champ. Decent vide lad 👌
@@iamchriswhelan cheers Chris. Yeah, I had an open pitch and it was pitched very high. If if’d have had the normal
Config and pitched a bit lower, and with my usual trekking poles it definitely wouldn’t have been a problem. Good fun though 🤣

@@overthehillwildcamper I still haven’t replaced my sit mat. Must admit, it is nice to have a proper seat if you know you’re not close to rock furniture

Oats, milk powder, water, salt, and soft brown sugar. At home I use golden syrup.

Yeah, those lads are fast aren’t they. Me Dad did the coast to coast in a day with Cestria. He tapped out at 95 miles though. Great effort at 72.

@@vvs3796 hi, they were LEKI Khumbu Lite. I borrowed them for my Dad as the twist lock on my LEKI Voyagers had jammed. My Voyagers are definitely more robust compared to my Dad’s. 👍
@@belowaveragewildcamper and the snapped?? Jees..I saw a test of leki khumbu lite online ..
I personally own leki Sherpa lite,which are very good but I should have bought a standard version..
@@vvs3796 to be fair it was an unbelievable gust of wind. Not sure my LEKI Voyagers would have done much better. All the best 👍
@@belowaveragewildcamper can I ask where did they snap? Bcs they are more likely to bend rather than snap ..
@@vvs3796 it snapped at the 115cm marker of the middle section. The gust caused it to bend almost double before it broke in two. Hope that helps. 👍
What’s happened to your video quality mate, very jerky and awful sound, otherwise it was nice to see
Like I said in the video, I plugged the external mic into headphone port instead of the mic port. 🤦♂️
Decided to use my Proper camera instead of my GoPro and the stabilisation isn’t as good. Now I Know It’s limitations the next time I use it it’ll be better.
