- 500 tons of ballast for the railroad are to be delivered today but they've got 100 tons dumped already before I got there. Some pretty cool views from different angles on the wheel loader as I'm stock piling the ballast.

Another brilliant video by the most friendliest honest real man, Dave! Always looking forward to your videos. Cheers from Western Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you for the kind words Alasdair, glad you enjoyed this one. Really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
That was oddly therapeutic.
Glad it made you feel better Jeff, I get a good feeling when they
bring ballast in too. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Dave, I'm very impressed how you maneuvered the wheel loader stockpiling the ballast. Your experience and skill was clearly evident...

Good looking ballast too bad for dumb truck drivers but someone had to fix the mistake great video thanks Dave
You are right Gary, it is the perfect size for ballast. Guess that guy who dumped there wanted to get it close to the loading ramp.... :-) Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Teamwork, all them little stones, together each one can make the loaders job really hard.
Your right about that EJ. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
I love all the different views from your GoPro. Very creative. Thanks for another great video. I do t know ow anyone that loves their job more than you do. You are blessed to have a job like this. It’s not work when you love it.
Thank you for the nice comment Beverly, glad you enjoyed the different views, that was a lot of fun to make them. Really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.

Dave! You certainly have some fun toys to play with at work!!!! I’m so envious and jealous!
You are right about that Dale, and they buy me the toys and then even pay me to play with them! Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

@@ccrx6700 yes indeed I wished I could be right over Dave. You are very welcome also.

You sure did get that pile of stone sorted out .now you have plenty to go at 👍👍👍👍
All in a days work John, but it didn't take long. I'm very lucky to
get ballast in even if a few trucks dump in the wrong place. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
That bucket moves lots of stone in a short order. Always fun stuff. Thanks Dave.
It does a good enough job for the small amount of ballast we
have here William, although I'm dreaming of getting a big CAT 980
loader, 3 buckets to fill one triaxle truck. Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Like playing with a really big Tonka Toy, how I miss those days. Have a Great Day 😀
Your right about that Anthony. When I was a kid played with the Tonka toys and Matchbox toys. Now the company buys me these
big expensive toys and then pays me to play with them.... :-)
Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Thank you for sharing Dave! I imagine it feels good once in awhile to have some low stress work, like moving ballast. I can see why you love railroading so must, you never have a chance to get bored!

The main difference between men and boys is that men play with bigger toys. Lol! Nice work, Dave.
Your right about that Cory. The cool thing is the company buys
these expensive toys, pays for all the maintenance on them, and
then pays me to play with them! Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Awesome action shots Dave, always a pleasure to watch you operate. Some good looking trucks there..

I was counting those rocks and lost count, now I've got to start all over again. 1gazillion and 1, 1 gazillion and 2... Thanks Mr. Dave, that's a bunch of rock, I sure would hate to have to move them all with a wheelbarrow.
That's what we do on our lunch break Rick, inventory the number
of rocks in that pile.... :-) Seriously tho I cannot imagine the number of stones we've gone thru over the years, it would have
to be in the gazillions. Thank you very much for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Just think that back in the early 1900's all this would have been shoveled by hand! Makes you wonder how people survived back in those days. Another great video of what goes on with a railroad.
Your right about that Dave, load it into a gondola and use a ballast fork to hand shovel it out, then hand shovel it back in the track.
Those were some real hard working men in those days. We do
love hydraulics now tho! Thank you for watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
Some days I think you have the coolest job, getting to play with the BIG toys.
Hope you and Mrs. Dave had a safe and Happy Independence Day.

That's a lot of ballast!
It's typically what we get in 400 tons at a time, we use it up
pretty quick tho. Thank you for watching and may you have a very good day.
Every time I've had to load or haul ballast it's been for wash outs so it ends up being some long days and nights. Hopefully your ballast is for maintenance or a track project. Take care
Luckily Chris we've never had a washout, track dropped many
times but never like you are saying. We have hauled a lot
of ballast in the past on slip areas, as well as rip rap. But most
of the ballast is for normal tamping or cribbing. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Cool stuff as usual. Nice idea using the different camera views. Have a great day Dave.
Glad you enjoyed it Ric, was a lot of fun playing around with

Great work Dave, but listening to the back up beeping all day would drive me more bonkers than I already am. Have a great day.
You get used to it after awhile Lewis, it's Fed law that each

Nice video! The different views were interesting to watch. Those are points of view you don't get to see! But as a kid, I got to ride in a big scoop, standing up and hanging on to where my dad told me to. He was driving it and that was a super cool ride and view indeed! One of the views looked like it was clamped at the top of the scoop!
The deliveries went fast!

That tunnel is so cool! I don't think I've ever seen one so round like that, it almost looks like it was made from a drain pipe. Just awesome, I want to use that design on my train layout now. I'm going to save a few screenshots on this video and see if I can recreate it 😁
Thats Mapletown Tunnel and goes under Mapletown Road, it is made out of corrugated sheet so like a huge drain pipe. You can se it on a few of Dave's videos like Riding the Rails MP12.5 to MP 16 End of Line
It is very heavy corrugated sheets that are rounded in shape, all
the sheets are bolted together. It is very strong. I don't have a

Enjoyed seeing all the different views on this Dave. When they took all that stone away in the other video I wonder why they did not get it delivered to the other site from the quarry.
Glad you like the different views Cedarcam. It was fun making
that video doing that. Those triaxles I loaded in the other video
we gave them that ballast, so that is why the contractor didn't
get it from the quarry. Really appreciate your watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Thanks for the explanation Dave and I bet it was fun seeing what the video recorded was like cos you would not know what it would turn out like while the cam screen was not in your view. Done that a few times on our heritage railways recently instead of hanging out of a window, they are getting monitored by regulators and I think soon they will put a stop to people being able to do that anymore, which is a real shame

BB is welcome to come and play in my stone Richard. For the past

Hi Dave, I am confused. Why do you continuously need new ballast? Where does the existing ballast go and why can't it be brought back up in place and used to be tamped back into the tracks?.
Good question Terry. When we're cribbing out the ties then all
the ballast has to get replaced including both shoulders. Also
typically when I tamp I lift the track up and we sometimes dump
new ballast down, sometimes we pull the shoulders in if there
is enough rock on the sides to do that. But even doing that eventually we have to add more ballast, plus I like to keep a lot
of ballast on the shoulders, helps prevent heat buckles and
track from sliding out in the curves. Some railroads don't use
as much ballast per mile as we do, varying road masters have
varying opinions on how much ballast they want in their tracks.
Thank you for watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
Sounds like that machine might need some grease. I wonder how many tons of rock has been used to build & maintain that railroad. That stuff isn't cheap. There must be a lot of coal down there.
Ballast is $18 a ton delivered here Bill, fairly reasonable pricing
but Im like you, wonder how many tons we have in our track,
it would probably boggle my mind if I knew. Thank you for watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
Hey Dave... who figures what qty to order...500 ton 25 truck loads avg 20 ton per truck...
We generally get 400 tons at a time Donald, that is one good
days work if the quarry has the trucks that day to bring all that
much in one day, they usually do. Sometimes if we are doing
a lot of cribbing or tamping, then I will ask for more. I am the
one who requests ballast and how much. They have never
denied or questioned me when I ask, which is awesome. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Dave I am very disappointed just a 3 yard bucket in a mining operation
We are lucky to even have this Case loader Donald. We used to
have to take the Cat IT24 loader and drive it out here then drive
it back every day we wanted to run ballast, it only has a 2 yard
bucket on it. Then they bought this one off a rental company
and gave it to us to keep at the ballast pile. I need a CAT 980!
Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Dave, how would you like a cab ride on the real KLS&C 85? This was our scenic train run from Paw Paw to Lawrence, MI. I made this run many, many times.
I just found this video taken in the early spring of 1989. It wasn't long after this video, I started to get training to engineer 85. That began my love affair with this engine until the end in December 1994. I hope you enjoy this video.
ruclips.net/video/NbAfZ-odL8I/видео.html
If you go to part 2, the caboose ride back, I have a brief distant cameo appearance beside the conductor at our "Depot" in Paw Paw at the end of the video.
Dave, I hope you enjoy both. Try not to be too critical of our track work! We sure could have used you!
That was my railroading! Still extremely enjoyable for a model railroader now getting to operate real equipment!
What size aggregate? It does look bigger than 11/2

Thank you for the nice comment Clarence and glad you enjoyed. Appreciate very much your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Nice! What is ballast classified as from the quarry in terms of Under x Over y or whatever?
There are different quarries across the country that have different
terms for the same size stone 4 SL. Some have modified, some
over, under, etc. For instance one quarry calls a certain size stone
used for driveways as 2B and the same stone at a neighboring
quarry they call it 57's. The quarry we get this ballast from classifies it simply as #3 stone. That is not the same as an R3, the R designation is for rip rap. Thank you very much for checking
out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Are there a lot of fines mixed in that?
Not as much as some quarries have and more than some other
quarries have Kevin. I'm going to have a video out sometime
all about ballast and will talk about the fines in the ballast in
that video. Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
What kind of rock is ballast made of? And what size is it? (my driveway for example uses 6/7 crushed limestone.)
That is limestone, deep mined rock Scott and it is classified as
#3, about the size of tennis balls. It would make a great base
for your driveway, but then you'd need to put that crushed limestone you have on top of it. Thank you for watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
And I’m just curious how many trucks it took to deliver 500 tons of ballast?
Typically there is around 21 to 22 tons of ballast in each triaxle
truck Tom. You can do the math for the number of trucks. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 , much appreciate your response. And good luck getting all that Ballast out on the line.
