Re Railing a Derailed Hopper Car

- A fluke caused this hopper car to derail and we are going to re rail it
in the video. The guys all worked together and we got this car re railed
in actually pretty good time. Took longer to get the re railers in place
than it did to actually re rail the car. The re railers we have are very
old and do not have a flange on the outer ramp. They are called a
straddle re railer or some call them a re railing frog. All new straddle type
re railers have a flange on the inside and outside of the re railer.
There are several different types of re railers and some day I will
do a video on the differences.
Silly cars are always causing trouble because they are tired of
being pushed and shoved around.... What a really cool show
Thomas the Tank Engine was, my son growing up loved that show.

Can't believe how softly the remote operator set that puppy back down on the track!
Jerry is a very smooth operator as you can see Wally, we are lucky to
have him and he was working on a 12 hour midnight shift to boot
when he did this. Really appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
Unbelievable that a small chunk of wood could derail that hopper. Keep cool this week.
It's rare we get wood out of the mine, but every once in awhile
it happens Chris. They screen for metal but not wood. This was a
fluke, I don't ever remember it happening before. Really appreciate
your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good

For piece of wood a car was derailed. It is often the small things in life that have some serious consequences, Dave
You are right about that in more ways than one Rodney! But it's rare we get wood out of the mine, but every once in awhile
it happens. They screen for metal but not wood. This was a

Mr. Jerry just blew my mind. A locomotive virtuoso.
Agreed! Mr. Jerry has some mad skill.
Thank you for the nice comment Alter Ego. Most re railing doesn't go nearly as smooth as this one did. We lucked out on this one. Jerry is a very good operator. Really appreciate your taking the time to pay us a visit and may you have a very good day my friend.

Another exciting adventure on the railroad! Thank you for sharing Dave, that was nice work!
Yes it was, although this one went pretty darn well, they don't always
go that smooth. Had another car derail the first of that week and it
took over an hour to get it back on. Really appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
I'm happy for all you workers who have a wonderful company to be working with.

Now THAT'S Railroading!!!
Your right about that Jeff! But, re railing doesn't always go this easy. We were lucky Jerry was there, he is a very good operator. Really appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
You would think 50 tons plus weight of car would crush that wood and not detail it! Thanks for another awesome video, I’m learning so much on how trains operate!
It will crush soft woods, but hardwood blocks are often used in the re-railing process because they resist crushing.
Well that was an empty car which weighed 51,000 pounds and
only half that weight was on the truck that derailed Mark so it
wasn't really all that much weight. Glad you enjoyed the video and
that you are finding these movies to be of some value to you.

@@ccrx6700so Dave if the car was loaded it might of smashed the wood? That job was all in house or did you have outside help?

I know it's probably company policy to refer to Mr. Gerry as an operator, but to me Engineer adds a lot more respect and that was a very good job Mr. Engineer.
You are right Andy, engineer is a term that deserves respect and that
is why I use operator. Engineers are certified to run a loco. Here the
loco operator is a bid job and requires no certification. Only qualification is seniority. So out of respect for certified engineers,
I call these guys operators because that is their bid title, moble equipment operator. Really appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
Very interesting. I had no idea that you could control a locomotive that finely. Amazing! Thanks
Not very many guys have the great control that Jerry has Rex, he is
a really good operator and we are lucky to have him. He amazed me
at how well he did that too. Glad you enjoyed and hope you have a
very good day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 It's not just his ability to control the locomotive - the real skill is in controlling the slack in the train instead of letting the slack control you.
It is amazing.

Sure was a fluke Stubby. They screen for metal coming out of the mine but not wood. So rare that wood comes out with the coal and
this was buried in it. Thank you for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
Wow - nice work, surprised that a relatively small lump of wood could cause so much chaos. Impressive control on the rocking back and forth to get the car re-railed.

So, that’s the new fangle way of rerailing! In the old days, we use to use wooden wedges, 4x4’s and 2x10’s to rerail a wheel. Same for other side if both were off.
Those are old rerailers Paul, the new ones are much better.but even
old they are better than wood blocks and wedges, we've tried those
before, got to be living right when you use wood.... :-) Really appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day
my friend.
@@ccrx6700 worked at a steel mill with Fairbanks Morse and Baldwins (plus 2 EMD twin stack) locomotives. I think the track gang had the metal rerailers, but that was only on day shift. On night shift, we were on our own with conductor, switchman and yardmaster. Of course the engineer.

I always thought Engineers were not giving it enough throttle to get up and over the first few times on other videos. Now it makes sense why they rock it back and forth, to shift the wheels over closer to the rail so it's more in line for a cleaner re-rail.

I love trains but they kinda scare me sometimes. Something like a piece of wood can do such chaos. Especially train wheel flanges are just 1" in height. The Thomas The Tank Engine references made me giggle alot.
Those 30 year old rerailers have stood the test of time and they work great! Kudos to the engineer rockin' back N forth to get the wheel prepared. Awesome. :) That's railroadin'!

We used to have a box car full of oak boards of various sizes and wooden wedges. Literally a box car full, when it got low, they would send it out to a local mill that had rail service and they would fill it. Those rerailers can be a real pain sometimes, wood was easier. That was a Smooth Operator with that remote, nice job.
I can't imagine wood being easier Anthony. But these re railers are
heavy, I think they weigh 150 pounds apiece, that is their big drawback. Of course as you know, re railing doesn't always go this easy. We were lucky Jerry was there, he is a very good operator. Really appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.

Never had to re-rail a car before but it seems like the final action has a very similar feel to removing a snapped bolt or aligning a multi-plate drum clutch. A whole lot of "careful, easy, almost, come on" when things could go back to square 1, or worse. Then the wheel rolls over the hump, the bolt breaks loose or the drum slides on and angels start applauding.

What a bad place to have a derailment, at least it is close to all the rerailing gear.
The true advantage of being able to control the locomotive by remote control allowing the driver to really see what is happening rather than lots of hand signals or talk over a two way radio. Much more instant response. Must be a really good remote set up.

Hello Dave, So the wood was mixed in with the coal. from what I could see it looked like
about3 to 4 inches in diameter. that is not all that big to cause a derailment of a rail car.
is there tools to be able to clean out the coal between the rails? or is it done by hand?
that branch must have fallen in such a way as to be angled across the track, and wedged
in the material between the rails. great job Dave.

Wood came from under ground, who knows what it was used for. They could have used it to re rail a mine car. Cars go off under ground every day. It's rare that wood does come out. They have a magnet to catch metals coming out but nothing for wood. Really appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
Always interesting and educational.
Thank you for the nice comment Ken and glad you enjoyed. Really appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.

Thank you for the nice comment Colin. This is an interesting place to
work, always an adventure of some sort.... :-) Really appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
Be safe Dave in the heat going to hit Southwestern Pennsylvania and that’s railroadin and Murphy must have been a railroader.
The heat was hot and the coolest day we've had this week was 91 Mike. Not used to this heat so quick. Thank you for taking the time to pay us a visit and may you have a very good day my friend.
Really good video.
In Sweden we say "duck feet" for the re railers.
Amazing that a a piece of wood having the size of a home fireplace wood would derail a 100++ ton car.
Thanks for the new term I learned Stefan, I like it when you share
stuff like that with me. This re rail went really smooth, not very many
of them do. Really appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
A fine hand on the throttle!
You are right about that Doug. Mr. Jerry is a very good operator. Most
re railing doesn't go nearly as smooth as this one did. We were lucky
to have him there. Thank you for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
What a way to start the day! That was a very smooth rerail though, great job Dave!

could see. Really appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.

You are right about that Tony, always a new adventure here, wanted or unwanted..... :-) Most re railing doesn't go nearly as smooth as this one did. Really appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.

There's always something Dave! Very neat work by the crew to rerail and find the problem. Now you can rest easy! Keep them rolling!
It's rare we get wood out of the mine, but every once in awhile
it happens Richard. They screen for metal but not wood. This was a
fluke, I don't ever remember it happening before. You are right, I
can rest a lot better now. Really appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.

my dad always said, a shovel fits all sized hands....then showed me it fit mine 4 sure lol
Some of the guys I've been around here always said, that shovel doesn't fit my hand, too bad you dad wasn't a boss here to set them
straight Bill! Thank you for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
I don't why but, I thought you were going to need two of those massive Caterpillar side lifting machines!
Instead you use a simple Iron Tool!
They are expensive to get, but a lot of fun to watch in action. Rule of
thumb is, if the wheel is still on the tie then usually we can re rail
it. If it's off the tie, then time to call in the big Cats. Really appreciate
your taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good
day my friend.
You called it when you were speculating about the cause and you named wood as one of the possibilities. Nothing like experience. Thanks for the video.
It's rare we get wood out of the mine, but every once in awhile
it happens Charles. They screen for metal but not wood. This was a
