The definitive version of this song, SHATNER is on another level.
Shatner did this album with Ben Folds, with a variety of other names showing up for a track; Joe Jackson was the singer here. The entire album is genuinely great.
I love Shatner's version of this song. The anger as he spits out the words of the last verse is brilliant.
I CAN'T GET BEHIND THAT from the same album is magnificent
I actually, totally honestly, prefer this to the original. Not even a joke.
So do I lol
the punk aspect to this fits so well. the shat rules.
Every so often I like to revisit this album and I'm always surprised at how much it really just.. works.
On paper it should be terrible, but it just somehow manages to combine just right.
The whole album is amazing, It Hasn't Happened yet and and What Have You Done are incredible
The title song, Has Been, is a hoot too.
I absolutely agree. The whole album is great really.
Possibly the greatest cover of all time. Only the Shat would even attempt it.
Pulp is one of my favourite bands ever...... and obviously the original is the best, but Shatner nails this... he gets the anger, frustration and angst that is key to the song. Lots of poeple mistake this song for a boppy little happy floorfiller in a club, when its anything but.
Love this cover. The live version performed on David Letterman is excellent. I don’t think it’s on RUclips any longer, which is disappointing.
one of my favourite covers
I just want to jump on a pogo stick like 640 times
I seriously love it. It makes me want a version with just the guy singing though
That would defeat the entire purpose
Great job reacting! This version is much better than the original.
Yep. It’s not often a cover version can challenge an utterly superb original to the finish line, but this pushes Jarvis and Co all the way. Amazing
(And bloody hell. Joe Jackson shows what he is truly capable of 😳 !!!!)
On one hand it was very entertaining because....Shatner. On the other hand, he actually plays the song totally straight, takes it at its word, and puts much more emotion into the vocals than Jervis does (most of the emotion in Pulp's version is in the music).
First listen, just joy that he's getting it right, and surprise at *how* right he's getting it. Going to listen to it again, now, because it deserves it. Thanks!
There's real power in this version, particularly with that last verse (You're amazed that they exist and they burn so bright) restored to the song. Apparently it was meant to be in Pulp's release but the record label took it out. Too sincere, I suppose.
I saw the show title and was a bit concerned, but I like Pulp and like the original track and funnily enough this version was entertaining and I can definitley equate it to Andys sandwich. Joe Jackson does a great job here, as does Shatners vocals. Cheers fellas for an interesting show :)
This actually introduced me to Joe Jackson, which started a deep dive love affair with him.
(And I agree with Jon about Jackson's vocals being unironically amazing in this)
loved Joe Jackson for years, but this is perhaps his best ever vocal! Once bumped into the man himself before a concert in York, and all I could think was 'ah Joe, please stop smoking'. I did speak to him but as with most unexpected conversations with 'heroes' I just mumbled some rubbish before going in to see the show
The Sheryl Crow cover of Mrs Major Tom on another William Shatner album he did after this was amazing. That album is called Seeking Major Tom.
I didn't even know bacon was available in America I am a Canadian
I am old enough for this experience hook me up
Please guys react to 'Different Angle' by the cribs, you'll fucking love it!
I had considered requesting the original version. Note that Jarvis Cocker's version has a lot of talk in it too. But are we doing joke songs now. Perhaps I should request The Tubes. Have you heard this? ruclips.net/video/rs9wuaVV33I/видео.html
