That violin, at the beginning especially, totally has a middle eastern or Egyptian flavor to it. That is honestly my favorite sound of any music ever but it is used way to god damn rarely.

The song is an old Turkish melody that found its way around the Middle East, then was carried to America by Lebanese immigrants, where it was made famous by early surf rock guitar god Dick Dale, and eventually used on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack.
Adam Greenspan no no no, you’ve got it all wrong. The song is Greek but the word misirlou comes from turkish. I understand why you might’ve thought that it was turkish because it’s become super popular and it’s enjoyed by many cultures all over the middle east and elsewhere (Greek, Jewish, Arab ect). If you need sources then just go to wikipedia, even they back me up.

Most of the comments are about the video "WEEABOOS" by the youtuber Filthy Frank. He used this song in it and many fans wanted to find the original song. I'm one of them.

Yes it's an original Greek song dating the 1873 from the thriving Greek community of Cairo speaking about a legendary girl from Egypt that the singer praised her exotic beauty and he want to still her from Africa!
The song is about a Christian Greek man falling in love with the a Muslim Egyptian girl in Alexandria, Egypt, which was taboo in that society at that time. Hence the sadness and frustration expressed in the song.

Θεωρείται ο συνθέτης της παγκόσμιας επιτυχίας "Μισιρλού". Με καταγωγή από τη Στεμνίτσα Μαντινείας, σε ηλικία περίπου 25 χρόνων πηγαίνει στην Αίγυπτο για να εργαστεί ως αρχιμουσικός στην υπηρεσία του βασιλιά Φουάτ Α΄. Γύρω στο 1925 θα εγκατασταθεί στην Αμερική, όπου θα ιδρύσει στη Νέα Υόρκη τη Χορωδία Ρουμπάνη, με την οποία θα συμμετέχει σε 20 περίπου ηχογραφήσεις. Έχει συνθέσει μεταξύ άλλων τη μουσική κωμωδία "Ελληνο-Αμερικάνα" (1933) και πολυφωνική εκκλησιαστική μουσική, όπως τη Θεία Λειτουργία της Ορθόδοξης εκκλησίας της Αμερικής. Επιστρέφει στην Ελλάδα ύστερα από 40 περίπου χρόνια, γύρω στο 1965, όπου και πεθαίνει λίγο αργότερα.
Μισιρλού, που σημαίνει Αιγύπτια (από την τουρκική λέξη "Mısırlı"; που παράγεται από το αραβικό مصر, Miṣr, "Αίγυπτος" και σημαίνει "Αιγύπτιος/Αιγύπτια") είναι ο τίτλος ενός ελληνικού ρεμπέτικου τραγουδιού, που είναι σήμερα πολύ δημοφιλές σε τέσσερα εντελώς διαφορετικά είδη μουσικής: στο ρεμπέτικο, στη λαϊκή μουσική της Μέσης Ανατολής, στην εβραϊκή μουσική που παίζεται σε γάμους και γιορτές (Κλεζμέρ), και στο surf rock.
Το τραγούδι πρωτοπαίχτηκε από τη ρεμπέτικη ορχήστρα του Μιχάλη Πατρινού στην Αθήνα, το 1927. Όπως συνέβαινε και με σχεδόν όλα τα πρώιμα ρεμπέτικα τραγούδια, ο αυθεντικός συνθέτης του τραγουδιού έμεινε άγνωστος, και η σύνθεση κατοχυρώθηκε στον αρχηγό της κομπανίας. Η μελωδία κατά πάσα πιθανότητα συντέθηκε συλλογικά από τους μουσικούς, όπως συνέβαινε συχνά εκείνη την εποχή, ενώ οι στίχοι ήταν σχεδόν σίγουρα του Πατρινού. Στην αρχική έκδοση του τραγουδιού, το όνομα της κοπέλας του τίτλου προφερόταν από τον Πατρινό "Μουσουρλού", με βαριά Σμυρναΐικη προφορά.

Μια και ο ισχυρισμός του αυτός ποτέ δεν αμφισβητήθηκε, θεωρείται ακόμα και σήμερα σαν ο συνθέτης του κομματιού. Οι S. Russell, N. Wise και M. Leeds αργότερα έγραψαν αγγλικούς στίχους για το τραγούδι. Ο Ρουμπάνης άλλαξε επίσης τον τόνο και τη μελωδία, δίνοντας στο τραγούδι τον ανατολίτικο ήχο με τον οποίο είναι γνωστό σήμερα.
Το τραγούδι διασκευάστηκε από τον surf κιθαρίστα Ντικ Ντέιλ (Dick Dale) στη δεκαετία του '60, όταν κάποιος απ' το κοινό του τον ρώτησε αν μπορούσε να παίξει ένα ολόκληρο τραγούδι πάνω σε μια μόνο χορδή της κιθάρας. Η εκτέλεση του Ντέιλ ήταν αυτή που έκανε γνωστό το τραγούδι στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες. Ο Ντέιλ είχε Λιβανέζικες ρίζες και συχνά ανέφερε την επιρροή της Αρμένικης μουσικής στο κιθαριστικό του στυλ, κι έτσι πολλοί πίστεψαν κατά καιρούς ότι το τραγούδι ήταν Αρμένικο ή Λιβανέζικο. Η ανατολίτικη βερσιόν του τραγουδιού υπήρξε επί χρόνια πολύ δημοφιλής στη Μέση Ανατολή, κι έτσι αρκετοί από αυτή την περιοχή πιστεύουν ότι είναι παραδοσιακό τραγούδι της χώρας τους.
Το 1963, οι Beach Boys στο άλμπουμ τους Surfin' USA παρουσίασαν μια εκτέλεση του τραγουδιού παρόμοια με αυτή του Ντέιλ, κάνοντας έτσι τη Μισιρλού ένα κομμάτι της surf παράδοσης αλλά και της Αμερικάνικης ποπ κουλτούρας. Μέχρι σήμερα έχουν εμφανιστεί εκατοντάδες επανεκτελέσεις, από καλλιτέχνες όλων των ειδών.
Το 1994 η Μισιρλού -στη βερσιόν του Ντέιλ- έγινε ξανά επιτυχία, καθώς ακουγόταν στο σάουντρακ της ταινίας Pulp Fiction. Το 2004, το τραγούδι επιλέχτηκε από την οργανωτική επιτροπή των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων της Αθήνας σαν ένα από τα πιο γνωστά ελληνικά τραγούδια όλων των εποχών, και ακούστηκε στην τελετή λήξης των αγώνων από την Άννα Βίσση. Τελευταία, το 2006, η εκτέλεση του Ντέιλ ξανάγινε δημοφιλής, καθώς αποτέλεσε τη βάση για το single των Black Eyed Peas Pump It.
Στην Ελλάδα, τη Μισιρλού έχουν τραγουδήσει αρκετοί καλλιτέχνες, ανάμεσα στους οποίος η Σοφία Βέμπο και ο Νίκος Γούναρης. Οι Last Drive έκαναν μια ορχηστρική surf διασκευή στο κομμάτι στο πρώτο τους άλμπουμ Underworld Shakedown το 1986. Αργότερα άλλη μια γκαράζ μπάντα, οι Sound Explosion παρουσίασαν τη δική της εκδοχή, σε πιο αργό τέμπο και πιο κοντά στην αυθεντική εκτέλεση, με τίτλο Misirlou the Greek. Το 2017 μία ακόμη ελληνική μπάντα, οι Blandras, κυκλοφορούν την δικιά τους διασκευή του κομματιού σε μία πιο psychedelic rock εκτέλεση, στο πρώτο τους άλμπουμ με τίτλο Purple Sun[1].

Missirlou was first aired in Athens around 1927 by Dimitris Patrinos, a musician from Smyrni. The song refers to a Christian's love for a Muslim, a theme-taboo for that time and not only. The melody either existed before and was a familiar listening in the wider area of the Ottoman Empire, or it is a group work of Patrinos' band. The only sure thing is that Patrinos wrote the lyrics. The international journey of the song began in 1930 by the US, with the release of Orthophonic album by Greek-American Titos Dimitriadis. In 1941 another Greek-American, musician Nikos Roubani changed his tone and melody, giving him the oriental sound he is known today. Make sure he has his name as composer of the song. As no one has disputed this right, Roubani appears as a composer of Misirllos all over the world except for Greece. Immediately after the adaptation of Rubanis, the song became part of the repertoire of great swing-era orchestras such as Harry James, Woody Herman and Xavier Kughat. But the great success for Missirlou came in the early 1960s by Surf-Rock artists. At the beginning, guitarist Dick Dale, a Lebanese musician (Richard Mansour's real name), started playing a solo with a single string of guitar. He chose Missirlou to respond to the challenge. In 1963, the great The Beach Boys featured in Surfin 'USA a performance of Dale's song, making Missirlo part of the surf tradition as well as American pop culture. In 1994, Missirlou in the performance of Dick Dale came back to the fore as he was listening to Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, while in 2006 he became popular as the basis for the Black Eyed Peas, Pump it......BRAVI from Mexico City!
