Thanks, the car is surprisingly easy to work on, in contrast to the DeLorean. Other than limited access, the 308 has been a pleasure to wrench on. Thanks for watching!
@@tr3wrench yes. It makes shiming valves a breeze. You can more precisely set cam timing instead of locking the pulleys and assuming it was already correct. After setting all of the valves and setting the cam timing I could tell a significant difference in performance. It's an 83 QV. I would recommend doing that to yours next time.
@@tr3wrench Ratarossa could be sitting on a gold mine with his white BB, though he still has a lot of work and a professional restoration to go on top of the 80,000UK pounds he paid for his. Only 2,323 produced from '73-84.
I heard a lot of guys never changed timing belts and that belts looked just fine in real world it’s gotta show use no cracking ply able it’s for content I get it lol ur really going all out on this 308
Really just for caution. 17 years old is pretty old for belts / hoses. Now I can turn the key without fear of a belt snap and an engine rebuild. Thanks for watching!
I got to say that I will never understand the notion that a radio is not needed, just because of the engine note. I daily my 328 and do long road trips, and it would utterly suck if there was no music or nav. It may be okay for a weekend warrior, but not for a car that sees frequent use. Does not have to be a major install, but a discrete head unit with a flip out screen, apple car play etc. and a set of speakers for the doors and dash, make all the difference in terms of how the car feels.
I did end up replacing the radio with a modern head unit and new speakers, but I still hardly ever turn it on when I'm driving this car. I'm typically only driving this car to be driving the car so that probably has something to do with it. Radio/NAV is usually part of my daily commute...
Nice video! I just bought a 78 308GTS that I’ll be doing some RUclips vids on soon when I start on it and belts will be the first thing to do. I’ve only worked on Chevys so felt a little intimidated but your video put me at ease…a little lol.
@@tr3wrench thanks! Yeah Ferrari chat has been immensely helpful and I’ll check out Birdman’s page as well. Should get the car tomorrow so I’ll prob hold off on some Chevy vids and do some Ferrari ones for a bit on here lol.
Mine is a 2 valve so this kit works for me. www.ricambiamerica.com/308sk2-timing-belt-kit-308-2-valve.html I did get the Hill Engineering tensioner bearings www.hillengineering.co.uk/tensioner-bearings-related/pt-308
Thought about that. They don’t have rubber boots like the DeLorean and only 40k on them. Trying to plan when to pull the engine and do seals, valve adjustment.... 70k maybe
No safety goggles but a face diaper ? Nice virtue signaling . 40 k mi engine out service ? Call me ignorant but I assume you live in the US and don’t have much opportunity to drive the little beauty balls out very much , but , hey, the price you pay to have the prancing horse on the hood . Don’t get me wrong, I love Ferraris, to look at , yeah, . Satire out .
Certainly don't use the goggles as much as I should... This was shot during the second wave here in the US. Data showed the masks reduced transmission significantly (not so much now with Omicron). Just being a good shop mate. True I don't get to drive her as much as I would like, especially now in the winter. I did manage to put more than 1000 miles on in the first year, and that was with a lot of time in the shop too. Shooting for 2k in 2022. Thanks for watching.
excellent step-by-step video. you have tremendous patience and very high mechanical and videography standards!

Makes me appreciate the removable sub frame on the mondial.
Wow can you drop the engine out the bottom???

@@RealDeanWinchester I'm thinking the next time will be engine out. Actually really looking forward to that.
Mine were were 7 years old when I changed them, they did not look too bad, but why risk a 30k motor? Take the Birdman's advise. He is great!
Birdman's page is a must for any owner.
amazing to see two 512"s under one roof in philly of all places
I KNOW!!! The black one is listed on their website for ~400k

Two 512’s in the same place is like an alien and a unicorn walking up and saying hi

@@tr3wrench Cool. What speakers did you end up with? I have a set of AudioFrog GS60 in the doors, but not really happy with them.
Big job. This is why I love TR3s instead.
I actually really like working on the 308. SO MUCH easier than working on the DeLorean :)
My Ferrari dealer tried to give me the wrong thermostat. Ended up getting a 54mm Wahler, as the 56 mm are super hard to find.
I'm 99% sure I ended up with the 54mm as well. So far so good.

I can’t believe a Ferrari has a timing belt and not a chain. Always loved the 308, but losing interest after finding this out.
Don’t let that be the thing that scares you off. They are not horrible to work on. Lots of thought was given to maintaining in the design.
"Hey dealership, do you have a gasket for a 40 year old car?"
"That will be 89.99 + tax"
"I mean, I'm here so...."
Also, can I take pictures of all your cars while I’m here?
Sure! They’re for sale...
It’s the Ferrari tax...add a zero or two to every part you buy.
You should have replaced the injectors while you had the intake off.
