- What the Tech? In this episode, we dive deep into a 1977 Ferrari 308 GTB engine. This one is broken and out for repair so we get to check out carnage and all the cool technology of1970's Ferrari. This engine was oddly overbuilt and had a very low horsepower output but the retro features and creative ingenuity definitely make up for it. Enjoy this show!

What do you guys think of naming the series "What the Tech?" Give me some suggestions for other mechanically interesting cars. Cool old or new tech, weird designs, bad designs, good designs, crazy engineering, etc.

Timing belt service can be done without removing engine , same with clutch
Seriously, Ferrari dealerships do not do 308 engine out timing belt or clutch service. I’ve done my share of belt service via the wheel well and it’s fairly straightforward. This job however is more than a belt service yet still can be accomplished in car if the piston is not damaged.
100% engine does not have to come out, I own one and do my own belts. Rear wheel off and wheel arch liner off and all is accessible. 348 onwards the engine had to be removed (up until much later cars)

Engine out for a 308 belt service?? Well, that's the first I've heard of that. That alone would make me nervous about using this shop. "North of $6K" for a belt service on a 308? Let me rethink that...run from that shop!
Yep, I've owned a 308 GTB for over 20 years now, and the engine has never been out. Belts are changed every 4 years irrespective of mileage - see some more frequent suggestions around, but have an older Ferrari mechanic and he is totally comfortable with that. It's a bit of a fiddle with the engine in - one of the gas tanks has to be moved an inch or so to get clearance for the belt cover, but after that it's all plain sailing. Costs around NZ 2k (about US 1300), so not that expensive (as are most other parts for the 308).
Exactly. But the babble sounds impressive for the video :-) I did my own belt change on 1976 308GT4, same engine. A couple of hours work taking my time.
*Ferrari owner: "So how many labor hours are we looking at?"*
*Mechanic: "Um... let me call my accountant."*

Then accountant calls a loaner/mortage bank to contact the owner and negotiate.
Definitely make this a series. Been geeking out with you over a year and learned a lot. Shade tree for life and enjoy learning and working on cars
Would be a fun short video of your Mom hanging out in that shop, maybe in a comfy chair watching “her shows” and she is there to translate the shop / parts manual for the mechanic. Eventually the mechanic is sitting with your Mom watching Judge Judy. Your Mom then cooks lunch for the shop... “you are putting that transmission back in this afternoon. You need to eat! Have some lasagna.”
I imagined Mom expertly telling the mechanic step-by-step instructions of how to rebuild the engine...

The gearhead in me really loves the inside look at how things work. I will never own a Ferrari or be competent to service one, but it fascinates me.
Alex, I wasn't sure how the mechanical videos were going to be, but after watching this on the 308, I hope you continue. I am an engineer and it is really cool to know how things work. I really like seeing things ripped apart and then with your mechanical insight bringing the oddities to light. Looking forward to future videos. This is one of my favorite channels, keep up the great content.

Exactly, that blue really works with the lines of the 308.
If you don't rush and appreciate the process, fixing it can be a rewarding experience. Plus it's a 308 GT, you know your going to treat it with care.
They went a bit overboard with the Italian stripes though, no need for them round the air intakes.. (would have looked better with a single, thin silver stripe).
Cool video! I also highly recommend Tyrrell Classic Workshop, who shows how to manually balance these multicarb setups. Like, with a hosepipe to listen to the carbs, and a screwdriver. Engine whisperer.

I hope you make this a series because this stuff is SUPER COOL to see. I would love to spend some time behind the wheel of one of these cars, but I can't imagine spending the equivalent of another S2000 every three years just to keep the car on the road.

It's easy to think that double or hard valve springs has to do with high hp engines, but as you mentioned, it has more to do with high revving engines. It's at high revvs valves start to float with to soft springs. High boost can also induce valve float at some installations

Yes, Alex, do it! Anything you can add to the public knowledge will be appreciated - maybe not now, but certainly in the future. Just consider how knowledge of carburetor repair has dwindled. Keep up the fine, professional work.
The original minis also had a weird engine/clutch/gearbox setup with the drive doubling back from the clutch through a gear to drive the gearbox mounted under the engine. The engine and gearbox shared the same engine oil. Bit of a challenge doing the clutch if you didn't have the tools.

OMG !!! You brought back memories - a friend and I made a bet during a Naval Cruise ( Westpac ) on which one would buy a 308 first. He purchased a SWEEEEET 77' Yellow 308 just hours before me and I went with a Red 77' Corvette. Oh Man, those were the days !! Nonetheless, Thanks for posting this !!

This is great!! I’d like to see some highlights of well engineered things on cars that are notoriously poorly made in the public eye. Volkswagen and Audi products from the early 2000s are pretty interesting, lots of things break but there’s some clever tech going on too.

What Oj said about customers is right. Giving a quote to a customer has to be explain very well. There is almost always something extra in there that will need to be addressed. I can not give out the total until im done.
Fiat 124 had the same style of lash pads. Worked on one in the 70's, the proper size pads were backordered 3-4 months for delivery in Los Angeles, the pad runs on a land around the inside outer edge in the cup.
Love this type of video! i would also like to see what the deal is with that Black Mercedes-Benz in the background! Another idea for videos like this, is the somewhat CRAZY repairs that relatively new German cars seem to need all the time....

Fluid is my kind of shop! Ferrari engine sitting next to American big blocks! Keep the series name and please keep doing it. Quick story. Have a friend who bought a 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 (amazing car) and took it in for an oil change and service at the dealer. Second oil change and they did everything that is suppose to be done per Porsche to maintain the warranty and records. $3000 service job. If you want to drive a race car on the street and pay mid 6 figures for it you cant complain about the maintenance costs. Great content keep it up!

This is awesome and I'd love to see you tell us why certain engines that are known to be good (Chevy 350, Ford 302, 4G63, 2JZ, etc) are so good and so well known for reliability and acceptance of modding
Interesting take on for an original video, I look forward to more if this format is successful. I appreciate the look into this rare tech. I have a 32V aluminum V8 where the timing belt shredded into 4 pieces at idle and all the internals survived. I still have the belt of course. Car is still going with its 2 distributors, one at the back of each cylinder head.
