Bravo Kei. The tenacity, the unrelenting drive to get to that ball, and the next, and the next. Kei is such a gifted athlete. I especially admire Kei's deportment on court. There is no showboating, no swagger. He just shows up for whatever is served to him. Kei plays to the ball. What a smart way to handle the opponent. I hope his injuries heal a 100% You deserve to play more Kei. Thanks a lot Wivo.
I remember seeing Kei play live in the SAP open in 2008 vs. Andy Roddick. This was a bit after Nishikori beat Blake in Delray Beach. Was always a big fan of his game and I wish it wasn't hindered so much by injuries.
Joker is a great player. He is basically a 2.0 version of Hewitt. Hewitt at a time dominated because of his style. Kept getting the ball back. Joker is better in most areas with height advantage and able to counter better. This is why he has so much success. On this day he played a guy who played a similar game with less errors. Whilst he is the most successful he's not the player most want to watch.
Unfortunately for Kei, after he beat Djokovic in USO, Novak started paying more close attention to Nishikori, and I lost count how many times in a row Djokovic beat him after that. The same goes for Wawrinka, for about a decade he could not win a match vs.Djokovic, Monfils is still 0-18, and Canadian players beat Djokovic once, and that was an exhibition ( Felix). Djokovic going against Berdych 25-2 is never mentioned, and one of those loses was at Wimbledon, when Djokovic had to surrender the match because of injury. Berdych could not believe his good luck, the next match he wore ND Adidas Barricade sneakers to honor Djokovic.
Cool, I am not surprised. Kei Nishikori has magic hands and he is one of the most brilliant tennis players that has ever existed. Roger Federer said that Kei was very talented. What year did this Djokovic vs Nishikori match take place?
I remember this match quite well. Kei did play well in this match, but Djokovic had some issue with his shoulder. It became apparent somewhere in the second set. Not only did he lose this match, he went on to lose 2/3 group stage matches to Ferrer and Tipsarvic in ATP World Tour Finals that year.
nope. no shoulder injuries this match. he played as he normally did. he just got outplayed here, plain and simple. no excuses this time, take the L and move on.
@@Khangst Idk lol. I've watched alot of Djokovic matches and his body language said he didn't really care that much throughout the match. This is no excuse. Just saying his intensity was far from the normal Djoker just saying.
Kei was always a player that I respected a lot, and even I have the raquet (and still use it) that he is holding in the thumbnail, the one that he beat Novak too on the USO 2014 semis
Nishikori was a top player - but judging from these highlights he was very lucky not to loose in straight sets . Certainly most games looked close in the final set too - He showed grit thats for sure
As a Djokovic fan this was incredible. I thought this was in 2017 during surgery, but no... 2011 so congrats. Let me remind you that H2H is 18-2 in favour of Djokovic. :D
Whenever Novak knows he’s about to lose he always makes an obvious attempt to make it look like he isn’t trying anymore. Which really undermines the opponent and is disrespectful in my opinion. Another bad example is against karlovic in Doha. It’s almost saying the only reason I lost is because I wasn’t trying. Roger and Rafa would NEVER do that. This has similarities to his history especially when younger of medical timeouts and withdrawals that never sat well with a lot of people
It's true, also when he beat Federer in 2019 listen to his victory speech he tries to upstart opponents. The Djoker cultists are way way way worse than Djoker, though, Djoker is actually quite humble it seems like when you dig deeper, but the cultists roll with the excuses.
Nishikori has grown in toughness and mental strength. But for now, it's just a source of rehabilitation for Djoko. Why is he still active and able to maintain his number one position?
Two reasons why he can in 2023/4 maintain no 1 ; he is a great player with a very steady n sound all round game - 2nd ; the competition since 2020 is weak and generally is of a ( much ) lower level than up to 2019. Most the top ten in 2024 ( with exception of alceraz & now Sinner ) would be top 20 only if playing back a decade ago - its dropped that much in my opinion
easy last part of 2011 djokovic recovery form an injury after davis cup match against del potro, he loses majority of matches and not win any title. Sure you ignore that fact, he lose to ferrer, tipsarevic, nishikori and he retires of 2011 paris masters by an injury shoulder, he did not play quarters.
1st few seconds is the exact reason I hate ND.you would never see roger celebrating like that, man has too much class to do it. ND would have to live twice to have his greatness
This match was extremely difficult for Novak. Dealing with his shoulder issues, he likely wanted to finish the match quickly and doninated the first set, which even the commentator described as "one-way traffic." Kei displayed brilliant shots and movements, though inconsistent, prolonging the match and Novak probably gave up in the final set, thinking ahead to the rest of the season. It was still a great achievement for Kei, which gave him lots of confidence to rise to top 10 player.

Nishikori sucks. He could never get the job done. When he was at his peak and expected to beat Federer at the Australian Open, he fell short in 5 sets. Even if he had beaten Federer, he wouldn't have won a slam. When we beat Novak and faced Cilic, he was swept. Great player, but not top tier. Just lacked the consistency and had a weak body.
Title should be changed as: "Japanese star makes light work of a fatigued Djokovic who won 10 out of 12 tournaments entering the Basel indoor tournament in 2011"
Nishikori is not "one of the most underrated players ever". Everyone knows he was very talented, but tennis is a results game and talent alone is not enough. He had an excellent career with a career high of 4th, but no grand slam title and only ever made it into one single grand slam final.
