Great final set tiebreak. One of the best I've ever seen. On the subject of whether the point should've been replayed or not I think the umpire made the right call. If you pause it when the line judge calls out and look at where the ball is, the ball is already on Carreno Busta's side of the court which means the call came after Nishikori hit it (in other words it was a late call). Not only that Carreno Busta was already going in the opposite direction when the call was made so it didn't hinder him and also means Nishikori's shot was a clean winner. That's how I saw it.

@@75yellowraven I understand what you're saying, but how can the challenge system hawkeye determine when the out call was made? Doesn't it only show the trajectory of the ball?
@@75yellowraven You got it wrong. It's the player's right to challenge which in turn must be reviewed to determine if the ball was in or out. Once the ball was determined to be in, the Chair Umpire is required to make the judgement whether the linesman call affect the outcome of the play. The umpire made the call that the call did not affect the outcome of the play (i.e. Busta had run the wrong way and was not in position to make a play on the ball independent of the linesman's call). An analogous situation is when a serve is called out but on review seen to be in. The point is sometimes given to the server rather than replayed if the umpire believes the receiver had no play on the ball. That's the rules...
The umpire got it right. The out call CLEARLY came after Nishikori hit the ball, and it was a clean winner while Carreno Busta was racing to the other side of the court. It would’ve been insane to take that point away from Nishikori.
It was the right decision overall but against the rules. The umpire really messed up by allowing Busta to challenge. Still, we all make mistakes although that's probably no consolation to Busta right now
@@iainstewart2102 Correct. It's like a serve that was called out and a return winner (out of reach) after the call. In that situation you have to replay the point...
What an insane match! Could have gone either way but just incredible how Kei stuck with it and willed himself through during the 5th set tiebreaker. This win is massive for Kei's confidence.
Despite what some people are saying the rule is not that the point HAS to be replayed no matter what. It is only to be replayed when the out call affects the outcome of the point. The call and the backhand were simultaneous. The call wasn't before the hit at all. And Carreno Busta was clearly running to the other side before the call. At that point it should be up to the Umpire's discretion and the Umpire made the fairest decision (Nishikori's point) all by the book.
I respect all the arguments that support the umpire. I was a umpire myself and i would say it was a mistake not to replay the point. And I tell you why. Imagine Nishikori misses the backhand. Don`t you think he would have complained that he was hindered by that outcall? Of course he would and that is the reason why the point should be replayed. It would be the fair decision even it would be extremely unlucky for Nishikori.
@@jochenknobel8175 No silly. In that scenario, if Nishikori misses the backhand then he would just challenge the call for a replay. Umpire absolutely made the right decision.
11:13 Nishikori hits the ball one tenth of a second before the linesman calls out. But Busta was already out of the point and was not affected in any way shape of form by the linesman call. So he needs to get his honesty and decency checked. If he was 100% honest and fair about it he would have accepted the umpire's call as natural and probably would have won the match. His will to win got in the way of his sportsmanship. He is still young and he can learn. Hope he does.
@Dennis J. Jansen Thank you ever so much! but to be fair the rule just states the obvious don't you think? I mean if the rule was any different it would be doing harm to the sport.
One of the commentators is clearly on Carreno Busta's side. Before the "controversial call," he called one of Nishikori's 2nd serve out. He kept mentioning it until someone had told him that the ball actually caught the back of the line. So I'm not surprised he was adamant about being on Carreno Busta's side when the call was clearly made after the Nishikori hit the ball. Thank goodness the chair umpire was impartial.
The umpire was right, Busta moved before the call and Nishikori hit a winner right at the call, Nishikori took the point Busta himself knew he was gonna loose that point
You are right. But it has nothing to do with the moving of busta or that nishikori will take the point for sure. It depends on when the ball was hit and the call of the line judge. And the call was very short after the ball hit nishikoris racket!
Yes.. carrenabusta was very much greedy I gotta say..coz he was 8-5 at that time.. obviously Nishikori deserved that point.. carrenabusta was way far from the ball.. Really liked the way Nishikori kept his nerves..😎😏
@@Fanthomas1742 you don't know miss judge doesn't always be replayed??? Case by case. You don't know about tennis at all. I think you just wanted PBC to win this match.
The rule says that the point should only be replayed if the wrong call impeded the players' game during the time the wrong call was made. For example, if an official calls out and you stop and don't hit the ball but it was clearly within your striking distance, then your opponent challenges the call and it shows that the ball was in, the point will be replayed. However, if a wrong call is made but a player is in no position to hit the ball back to your opponent's court, then the point goes to the other player. No replays. The problem is: the notion of whether or not a player were able to hit the ball back to continue play is purely subjective and the judgment lies under the umpire's discretion. In this particular case, it is as clear as day and night that Carreno Busta was in no position at all to be hindered by the call nor to continue play because he was so far away from the ball after the wrong call was made. The umpire made the right decision.
Totally agree! Similar rule prevails in the NFL if pass is uncatchable, no pass interference is called. Those commentators that made fuss about the umpires (correct) call are just like Shakespeare's "empty vessels"!
Totally agree with the ref. The ref may be exaggerating the explanation a little to explain it, but if you break it down, Nishikori has already swung, and just about hits the ball, when the "out" call is made. A professional player can not wait and react to a shot from Nishikori, as he is too close to the net, they have to guess and just choose to run one way or the other. And this is exactly what Carreno-Busta does...on Nishikori's backswing, he has chosen, and starts legging it to the right. It is obvious, if an "out" call had or had not been made, he would still already have been running that way anyway. It is a shame that Carreno-Busta did not just accept this, let it go and move on to the next point, he may have won. He allowed the fiery Latin character to come out.
It's the eternal debate between common sense and the strict rules. Personally I believe in common sense (and thus this decision), but if you believe in strict application of the rules (which is totally fair as well) then this was the wrong decision@@janveraart307
The late call was made right around the time Kei was hitting the ball, it's hard to tell whether it's right before or after he made contact. But I feel that it is irrelevant here, because the late call was about the shot that PCB made on Kei's side, not Kei's shot on PCB's side. Kei needed to touch the ball and make the shot (which he did) to make sure a replay was granted just in case the call was overruled by Hawkeye (which it was). After that PCB did not have to do anything to earn a replay. He can be standing on the moon and there should still be a replay. So I think the umpire did make a mistake. But Kudos to both fighters for such an amazing match!
the umpire made the right call … he was already in the motion of hitting the ball before the linesman called out … Carreno Busta was already at the other side of the court even when Nishikori was about to hit the ball down the line … so what's the fuss all about?
Dennis J. Jansen Exactly right, so the umpire was right, the bad call didn't change the outcome for either player, so C.B. shouldn't have been rewarded with a replay.
@Dennis J. Jansen Thanks for enlightening me about the rule. I've been asking about it. Nishikori deserves to win. The Spaniard, who we'll not mention the name, should learn from his mistakes.
I agree with the umpire. CB had no play on the ball whatsoever, so had the correct call been made it was Nishikori's point. CB tried to get rewarded for the linesperson's mistake when he'd clearly lost the point. To me Nishikori was already swinging when the out call came.

Still, we all make mistakes although that's probably no consolation to Busta right now
no. call was in error while point still very much active. replay only fair solution
@@iainstewart2102 Correct. It's like a serve that was called out and a return winner (out of reach) after the call. In that situation you have to replay the point...
@@guillezorro Busta has the ability to challenge no matter what.

Nishikori fan here! Ups from Illinois!

Legendary match.
The pride in Chang eyes at the end is magical.
Well done Nishikori. His concentration was just superb.

Thank goodness the chair umpire was impartial.
he was so biased, amazing attitude.
The umpire was right, Busta moved before the call and Nishikori hit a winner right at the call, Nishikori took the point
Busta himself knew he was gonna loose that point
You are right. But it has nothing to do with the moving of busta or that nishikori will take the point for sure. It depends on when the ball was hit and the call of the line judge. And the call was very short after the ball hit nishikoris racket!
Yes.. carrenabusta was very much greedy I gotta say..coz he was 8-5 at that time.. obviously Nishikori deserved that point.. carrenabusta was way far from the ball.. Really liked the way Nishikori kept his nerves..😎😏

k k is definitely right Carreno Busta was running to the opposite side where Nishikori hit it
yep and he started running even before the call was made . so the call didn't affect his gameplay
Yes but according to the rules after a bad call they have to replay the point regardless of the outcome.
@@Fanthomas1742 no , umpire is correct, if you should check it out.
@@akas224 To be honest there is no correct call. Either way its bad for the opponent. The linejudge fucked it up.
@@Fanthomas1742 you don't know miss judge doesn't always be replayed??? Case by case. You don't know about tennis at all. I think you just

Awesome Nishikori👏👏👏

THE CLIP SURGEON True this damn Latin Character kill our possibilities many times.
that's not how the rules work
It's the eternal debate between common sense and the strict rules. Personally I believe in common sense (and thus this decision), but if you believe in strict application of the rules (which is totally fair as well) then this was the wrong decision@@janveraart307

Kei must meditate for hours every day to stay that calm while Pablo is shouting 😂😂
That's not how the rules work
@@janveraart307 what makes you believe you know rules better than umpires?
I absolutely agree with you, the only thing I do not understand is why the umpire allowed the challenge if finally he gives the point to Kei anyways.

if you go to 10:15 and slow it down to 0.25 speed, you will hear the out call is made just after Nishikori hits the ball
I agree with the umpire. CB had no play on the ball whatsoever, so had the correct call been made it was Nishikori's point. CB tried to get rewarded for the linesperson's mistake when he'd clearly lost the point. To me Nishikori was already swinging when the out call came.
