CRF300L Rally Riding Desert Canyons in Utah (Shafer Canyon Road)

  • Before starting the Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route (COBDR) with my Honda CRF300L Rally I stopped to ride the famous Shafer Canyon Road in Canyonlands National Park.
    Drone footage is not of Shafer canyon as drones can't be used in National Parks. The footage is from a few miles away and is similar to Shafer Canyon.

    I’ve had my Rally for a few weeks now. I absolutely love it! I really think this bike is what most ADV riders actually want, or need,even if they don’t know it. I think those big ADV bikes are fantasy bikes,built to fulfill a fantasy.

      Those big ones are mainly touring bikes meant for long fast rides with lots of gear. But, you are right that 300 is all that most riders need for frequent shorter runs.

    For someone like me living in EU this looks simply A M A Z I N G (we do not have anything like that, at least not nearly as vast). Truly spectacular so thanks for sharing 😊 A little less amazing looked the suspensions of the CRF in the first part of the video, ok plush... but that is a little too much. I d have the spring replaced and the hydraulic tuned if not replaced altogether.

    • @TrekEthos
      @TrekEthos  2 года назад

      I'm actually not critical of the suspension on this bike. When I first got the bike I couldn't believe how soft the suspension was coming from a WR250R. But over time I've come to appreciate the benefits of it. The soft suspension makes the bike very comfortable when riding on broken dirt roads. It's much less fatiguing then my WR250R as I don't need to stand nearly as much since the suspension just soaks everything up. On the flip side the WR250R works much better when ridden hard and fast off-road - that bike has no issue with flying through the air. I don't use the Honda as a hard enduro bike though I use it to ride long distances off-road so I actually prefer the comfortable setup of the bike. If you are looking to ride this bike aggressively than a suspension upgrade makes more sense.

These videos remind us of why we ride! For the experiences and the destinations! The stunning landscapes, combined with good footage and quality editing make for a really enjoyable RUclips channel. It was 95 degrees when I was there and I had my full riding gear (Which is not set up for temps that high), I only had 3 liters of water, and I didn't carry my extra 1 Gal Rotopax for fuel. What are your thoughts on the 300L suspension? The most common complaint is that it is too soft and from the video, it looked like the suspension was pretty soft. I am interested in buying this bike next year. I won't be doing anything hard-core but I weight 200lb so if suspension is too soft on trail, then I would need to factor in cost of upgrading the suspension.

      I actually have no intentions of changing the suspension on the bike. There isn't a right or wrong answer here as It really depends on how you intend to use the bike. If I intended to ride this bike aggressively at ORV parks all the time then yes I'd want to upgrade the suspension (or get a different bike entirely). But 99.9% of my 8500 miles on this bike are on broken up dirt roads and double track where the soft suspension soaks up all the bumps while I am seated making it much less fatiguing for long days in the saddle. I actually prefer the comfort for sport tradeoff for how I use my bike.

    BTW, how tall are you? You seem to be able to flat foot that easily. I'm 5' 10", with a 31" inseam, so it would be good to have a comparison.

    • @TrekEthos
      @TrekEthos  2 года назад

      Thanks🍻 I'm 6' tall with a 32" inseam - the bike is very easy for me to flat foot. The seats lower than the specs would suggest as the suspension has a notable amount of sag to it once you sit on it. At 5' 10" I don't think you'd have any issue with flat footing this bike.

    Sweet video man. What are your thoughts, after all the miles, on the suspension? Are you considering an upgrade kit to make it a little stiffer, or is it a good compromise as is?

    • @TrekEthos
      @TrekEthos  2 года назад +9

      Thanks👍 Yeah good question - I have no plans of upgrading the suspension. You can see in the beginning of this video just how easy it is to overwhelm the bikes suspension. Even moderate speeds over bumps can completely bottom it out. So why am I not upgrading? Because the bike is very comfortable which is exactly what I want for traveling long distances. On broken up dirt roads you can sit on the bike and just have the suspension soak up everything - you don't need to stand. My WR250R has much better suspension for aggressive riding but it's stiffer setup is more fatiguing to ride for longer periods of time. That trade off of comfort for sport works for how I use my bike. If you intend to ride the bike in a more sporting context then an upgrade might make more sense.

    • @skylerlovell1780
      @skylerlovell1780 2 года назад +1

      @@TrekEthos Thanks for those thoughts. If you don't mind answering, what is your height and weight and how does the bike accelerate when loaded for a weekend trip? Do you feel like you crave a 650-800 CC ADV bike or is the 300 Rally exciting enough?

    • @TrekEthos
      @TrekEthos  2 года назад +9

      I'm 6' and about 190lbs in full riding gear. I also own a Tenere 700 - the midrange ADV bikes are a very different riding experience than the Rally. You can absolutely feel the 120lb difference between the bikes - the Tenere feels ridiculously heavy after getting off the Rally. That said, the T7 crushes the Rally on the road but off-road the Rally is way more confidence inspiring largely due to it's weight advantage. I go way further off the beaten trail in the Rally then I'd dare go with the T7. The T7 requires a lot of skill to untap its potential off-road whereas the Rally is very accessible, even to a new off-road rider.

    Off-road, I notice that you ride standing up mostly. Doesn’t this make for a tiring ride? I’m thinking about buying one, but not if there’s some inherent reason for not sitting and enjoying the rides. That said, I know that it’s necessary or better to riding standing up, if we’re talking about certain trail conditions or types...

      In general I'd say that off-road riding is physically more demanding then on road riding. This is particularly true the more difficult the route becomes. I just finished the WABDR and there were sections of that route where I was breathing as hard as I do while running. If you intend to use your bike on smoother dirt roads then yeah you can sit and let the suspension due the work. On my travels I'd say I'm seated probably 90% of the time.

      Drone footage is not taken from in zion national park - it's nearby, a few miles down potlash road outside of the national park boundary. This is why you cannot see shafer road in any of the drone footage. All the shots from the park were done with a tripod.
