    Great video!
    A good strategy is to roll into a nearby campground for a night or two too dump your tanks and trash, take on fresh water and propane, do laundry, provision up, take a long hot shower or two, then repeat. It’s like one stop shopping.

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  3 года назад +5

      We do that some times, but we prefer to free camp whenever possible. If we find a good deal on a campground, we will certainly take advantage of the amenities!

      Stonyboot I’m shopping for a Cirrus but cannot decide between the 820 and the 920. I’ll be watching to see your power upgrades to see if they’ll fit in the smaller one. I hear Nücamp may be bringing a new 920 to the market but I really like the enclosed storage in yours as opposed to the open “penguin” cabinets in the cab over. I’ll see. My house is just about ready for sale, so soon!

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  4 года назад +2

      I’ve heard the same about the 920, but I think it will be a while before they do. The 820 and the 670 seem to be a priority right now. Once all the parts come and I’m able to complete the install, we can do a video about the results. Thanks for watching.

    Very well organized especially considering the limited space in a truck camper. One trick that many full timers use is to wash dishes in a plastic tub that fits in the sink, then dump the water in the black tank.

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  2 года назад

      Thanks. We try to stay organized, which isn’t always easy.
      We do have a second tub/sink that we use sometimes. Why would you put the water in your black tank instead of the grey tank?

    • @oldyeller9849
      @oldyeller9849 2 года назад +1

      @@Stonyboot This is coming from MH experience rather than truck camper but two reasons: more things dump into the grey tank so it fills up quicker. Pouring this big slug of soapy water down the toilet helps minimize unwelcome 💩 pyramids. Many new campers have (completely understandable) capacity anxiety so whenever they have a chance it's top off the water, top off the propane, top off the battery etc. At the same time they want to dump their tanks for the same reason. But you should avoid using black tank when it's completely empty - add some soapy water after dumping and don't dump it until mostly full

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  2 года назад

      I see what you’re saying. That’s excellent advice. We just have a different method. I do put soap in the black tank to help with oils and solids. But we dump our black tank every 2 weeks or so, so I don’t put any additional water in there if i can help. I always put a little soapy water in after we dump and flush. Also, since we move frequently, the poop pyramid has never been an issue at all. Grey water disposal is a little easier than black water, so we really try to maximize the space in our black tank.

    well done video.. good quality and editing.. Maybe a recirculating shower isn't practical for you, but it helps us separate the drinking water from the shower water.... People care about the bathroom the most. Your adding water how easy is it to dump waste ? Locations easy to find or ditch dumps. Most that are watching this have a half ton with dreams.

    Just a little tip here. The screens take up the most power on the laptops. You can set it so it does not "sleep" or hibernate if you close the lid. so if you are not immediately using them, closing the lids will save you a lot of power. :)

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  3 года назад +1

      That’s a great tip! I have my laptop to turn the display off and remain on. Power consumption of the laptop is minimal while its doing its nightly work. The real power draw comes from my QNAP NAS. I use it for video storage and my synchronized archive of data that replicated overnight (I’m always 200-500 GB behind, so I try to take advantage of good internet connections whenever possible. We generate about 200GB-1TB of data per month and I try to keep it synced with my cloud storage. Sasha has a studio light, laptop, iPad and phone. We also like to use our electric oven and hair dryer occasionally.
      I can run 3 fully days on a full charge with 24/7 operation of my laptop/NAS setup. If I don’t have enough service to upload at night, I shut it down and conserve power.

    You should use a water maker like the ones use on live aboard sailboats. I have put together a system to be able to make water here on the east coast when boondocking. It uses a water pump run by a solar panel or a battery and it has 4 stage filters. You could mount it o. The front of your truck then water would never be an issue. Reverse osmosis system is the best with 2 stage prefilter.

      I have a 42’ 5er with a ram dually, it’s just too much, wanting to downsize to go more places, oh yah, I work full time, that’s the problem, how do you get medical coverage on the road ?

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  3 года назад

      @@normnilsson7208 The medical question varies from state to state. If you are going to be full time on the road, you can change your residency to a state that has an attractive offering. Florida, as far as I know, is the only state that offers a Nationwide PPO, which would give you coverage in every state. The plan we are using is through New Hampshire and only offers coverage in a few select states. However, most policies cover emergency care in any state, but followup care might not be covered unless you return to your home state. We have considered moving to Florida, but we like Texas better. Texas has better options for businesses and personal taxes, but don't have the same options as Florida for Healthcare. It's a complicated problem to solve. Which state are you a resident of?
      And yeah, I bet a 42' 5er is a monster to maneuver, but it must be very comfortable to live in! The RV world is full of trade-offs, we can go almost anywhere and do a 3 point turn, but space is limited. :-\

    Great video. Just a thought here, for adding the water from the cans to the truck, have you considered the siphoning tubes used for gas? You can pick them up at Harbor Freight and don’t have to try lifting the jugs. Though I was quite impressed with the pour technique you use!

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  3 года назад +1

      I might get a battery powered fluid transfer pump. To siphon it, I would still need the jug higher than the gravity water fill. I like the idea of a pump as it would give us some new options. It’s in my amazon shopping cart, we just haven’t seen the need yet.

    If you have the room a three stage water filter system installed between tank and water pump and a access port cut into the top of your freshwater tank lets you get river water and dump it straight into the tank with a bucket, then you don't have to beg for water and carry so much extra. Plus the chiropractic bills from excessive water jugs on your head will be less.

    The reliance jugs are ok and definitely better than most on the market, but I'd go for NATO or US Military Water jerry cans - yes, only 5 gal of water but very thick walled plastic that can take a beating. I have mine up on the tongue of my offroad trailer and those jugs hold up nicely. I do use a 12V transfer pump with a hose to transfer water to the on-board tank - that way I don't have to take the jugs off the trailer tongue and I don't have to lift 40lbs around. Of course, my offroad trailer doesn't have a bathroom, but it does have a on demand hot shower which sucks water from whatever supply you give it. That allows me to conserve potable water because we use the shower with water from creeks and lakes - clean enough to suck up, heat and shower in - just keep your mouth shut. Get some old books on how food was preserved way back when. I generally bring several weeks worth on trips and we've never had to head out and buy food on any of our trips. Usually we can stay out there for weeks at a time if we find a water source we can filter for drinking. Yes, dried things like rice and beans go a long way as well as bringing flour and other such base ingredients that store well and if you have the knowledge you can make everything from bread to tortillas right there on a campfire. We go camp with a 30 quart electric fridge and that can keep the few perishable items we bring for weeks.
    You have a lot of batteries and very few solar panels. I run 200Ah LiFePO4 batteries and 400W solar panels in addition to the Renogy DC to DC charger which is mounted in the back of my jeep and connected to the trailer via a fat 8gauge wire. That pumps spare charge into the batteries while driving since all but 150W of my solar are mobile panels only useful when parked.

      I have several more aspects of the technical systems and the WiFi, cell booster and connectivity in general is a big topic. I’ll be sure to address these topics. I think you will only need one, I put the internal antenna near the pass through window and that will boost signal inside the truck. A little Velcro holds it in place. One thing I would suggest, is looking into the spring loaded antennas that you can get with the system. It will make mounting easier and you won’t have to worry about breaking it on a low branch. I’ll discuss that when I put it together!

      Thanks for the comment/questions! This has become I have gotten a lot of questions about the batteries and will cover them in a future video, so stay tuned. For now, I can tell you that they are a custom design to meet the space requirements that I have in my camper. There was nothing on the market that had the correct capacity and dimensions. I set out to design something to support our needs. They are completely custom and not available, however, with all of the questions people have been asking, I'm looking at options to bring them to market. I'm workin on a second version to improve a few key areas. Check back soon for an update.
      They did replace our dual 6 V 224 AH AGM batteries since those were only enough to keep us powered for half a day (lots of computer work). Right now, we charge from our generator, we have a full video on that on our channel. I'll also be finishing up our alternator charging system as well as expanding our solar setup soon. We are working on a series of videos to cover RV power systems and will include our entire setup. It's all coming soon!

We have a 32 year old RV and do not drink from our storage tank. We use that for everything but drinking. We have a 7 gallon tank to use for drinking only. For electrical I ran everything in my RV off of propane and 12 volts.
    I had two big batteries on my diesel pickup and one battery on my trailer and I would plug the trailer into my truck during the night and run the truck a few minutes during the day to charge the batteries. That gave me enough 12 volt power to run my lights, my TV, and my 12-volt fan blowing on me all night because in the summer it was a record heatwave but that fan kept me plenty cool all night.
    Converters and inverters have a certain amount of loss making them less efficient and draining your batteries faster.
    Instead of converting 12 volts into 110v and then running 110 volt appliances you would be better off buying 12 volt kitchen appliances and etc which are plentiful.
    There are many dozens and dozens of different 12 volt kitchen appliances, household appliances, tools, beauty products, including 12 volt heaters, 12 volt swamp coolers/evaporative coolers, 12 volt refrigerators and the list goes on and on etc.
    There is a great number of 12 volt TVs with built in DVD CD players for RVs. Most electronics design for household use also run on low voltage around 12 volts. They have a built-in step down transformer with a full wave bridge to change them from 110 volt AC down to 12 volt DC. From household current down Automotive/RV current.
    Most RVs have a lot of 12 volt lighting throughout the RV and you can put a 12 volt outlet by each 12 volt light fixture to give you more access to 12 volts for your different appliances throughout the whole RV. And again by avoiding using an inverter your batteries will stay charged a little longer.
    Most of the time I would have no use for an inverter generator except on very rare occasions. And people like to steal them in broad daylight, even while you're traveling stuck in heavy traffic to run up and grab them off your vehicle.
    you can also charge your onboard batteries a lot faster by running the tow vehicle engine then you can by running a generator anyway.
    I have also heard a lot of people having frequent problems with their generators breaking down at the worst times.
    I have seen a couple of other people mention this also.

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  3 года назад

      The only thing we use 120 volts for are the traditional appliances like, A/C, Microwave, hair dryer, etc. We also have a bunch of computer stuff. While I could convert everything to 12v, that causes problems when we need to take advantage of a hotel, or when we visit friends. The last thing I need is more adapters and cables. The efficiency loss through the inverter is solved by having adequate capacity and charging. 600 AH keeps us powered up for quite a while, and 80 amps of charging from the truck gives us a solid source of power.

When you said your parts for your solar/charging system would arrive in a week (ref. 10:47 min), where do you have them delivered when you're travelling? That’s an excellent question! I’m thinking about doing a video about that topic. It’s rather complicated, especially when you have to get speciality medications delivered monthly. Since FedEx, UPS and USPS all have different policies, it’s been difficult getting deliveries. I usually have to figure out which service will be used to ship, them chose an appropriate FedEx drop off, UPS store or Post Office to have it shipped to. One problem with Amazon is that they use all three services depending on their pricing and the item being shipped. With my last larger order, I found a local computer shop that would accept any package for a $5 fee per package. It takes a lot of planning and phone calls, but it’s doable. There might be a video on that soon!

    Hi thanks for the great video and just wondering if you add a splash of bleach in your jerry cans when you fill them up with freshwater. When I use city water I'm not so sure I need to add anything extra since there are so many chemicals in there to begin with? I use chem strips people use for hot tubs and swimming pools to determine how much of what is in my water.

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  Год назад +1

      Great question! For us, when we fill our tanks with city treated water, we don't bother adding bleach. If we fill with non-treated water from a well or something similar, we add a couple drops of bleach. Also, since we don't store our water for more than a week, and , we give it a sniff test before we dump it in the tank, we've never had any issues. In hot climates you might need to adjust your procedures. You have the right mindset, keep it up!

      That will require either a generator or an inverter to provide 120 volt power. That grill requires 1760 watts of power. So a 2000 watt generator or inverter would be required. If you go the inverter route, you will need enough battery capacity to supply power while cooking. You would also need a way to then recharge the batteries. Do you have any other electrical needs? Also, why kind of van do you have (or will be getting)?

For us U.S. RV'ers, Canada seems a tough nut to crack when it comes to finding reasonably priced cell data service. (I'm referring accessible areas, e.g. cities and larger towns). Arranging the American provider to allow Canadian access for a small fee is the easy part; finding a Canadian vendor with an affordable data package has, so far, been impossible. Any thoughts? And you both do a very nice job here. Best wishes to you.

      We were supposed to go to Alaska and explore Canada last summer. Unfortunately it didn't work out, so we focused on exploring the U.S. We haven't faced the issue you described yet. However, we still want to explore Canada, so we will have to figure this out eventually. May be we'll make a video about it! :)

    I’m making a video on how I walk my dogs in the park and how when they come home they drink water from their bowl.

      Let me know when you post it, I'd be curious how you handle such a complex task.

    Good info. tks for sharing. Please share with us your solar plans. I think this will be the norm for the future. I have funded a couple solar power generators with solar panels coming thru Indiegogo, hopefully, receive in a couple months. ;-)

      Right now our panels are the factory installed 100 watt variety. We will be upgrading them in the next few weeks and will post a video about that when the time comes!

    Just found your channel Love It! a suggestion to further save water is to buy some unscented body wipes and wipe yourself down daily and only shower every 3rd day or so also you did'nt cover the topic of going to the bathroom especially on extended boondocking trips? Happy Trails!

      Thanks for the tip! We use body wipes when we go back packing and they are very handy. Our black tank holds 18 gallons and going to the bathroom is not a problem for about 2 weeks. However we can extend that by peeing outside whenever we can!

      @@Stonyboot Better (for me) than unscented wet wipes are Water Wipes. avail at Walmart and, of course Amazon. Costco too. 99% water and a drop of fruit essence. No chemicals on my dangle bits!

      @@metaxaanabeer after some thought, this sounds like a really good idea. We are running low on water and it’s too cold out to use the river. Wipes would be super handy. I think I’ll grab some next time!
