- 3 woods or fairway woods are often the most difficult clubs to use as they are the longest clubs that we play from the ground.
In this short video Chris covers the delivery needed to be successful with this club, along with some swing principles that will get you hitting the 3 wood more consistently than ever before.

Something i found out works for me is to instead of looking at the ball, look to the grass right in front of it, that really helped me
After 25 years of golfing without fairway woods, I have just been fitted for a new full set. Sim TM. I've had the clubs for 4 weeks so I have only played 10 rounds but this video has transformed my game from 185 yards upwards. I am hoping I can now get below 18 consistently. At 67, I should still have a few good years to maintain some distance. I will let you know. Now to try your drill on drawing irons!!!....
The more videos I see of yours the more I really really need to book a 1 to 1 lesson with you!! Everything you say is easy to understand and an endless conveyer belt of knowledge!! 👍🏻👌🏻
You are such an outstanding teacher. Another great explanation of an old problem. Cheers Chris!
this is the best video i've seen on hitting 3-wood on the approach. club face description was unique and very informative when tying together swing pattern and stance. nice job Chris!
Great advice Chris, now I understand the mechanics of the club, and the swing!
Excited to try this out on the course! Love your straightforward teaching!
great video Chris ….. perfect timing on this video as of late been having an issue with my impact but after this i'm sure I'll get it sorted out thanks …..keep up the great work
Thanks for your instructional videos, best advice I've seen for a long time !
That's probably the best, most informative 3w video I have ever watched.
Very well explained. I struggle with my 3 wood, but will try these ideas on the range. HNY
All I had to do was watch this man's golf swing and he immediately he got my attention. His concept of hitting a fairway wood (or any club for that matter) off the turf is spot on. For years I was a sweeper.Tried to help the ball get airborne with a little flip of the hands. Was a little anal about taking divots with the long clubs off the fairway - "WRONG". Hit down and create backspin, that is how the ball gets in the air.
Thanks for explaining the dynamics of the wood iron shot. I've always struggled with woods so this hopefully this will help
Excellent advise/ drill. I am back to loving hitting my 3 wood (>220yds) again. These insightful mechanics really helped. Thx
The explanation at the beginning made a lot of sense. More detail than most videos. Well done. I'll try to stop sweeping so much and hit the middle of the clubface. Lots of practice since ditching the driver.
Chris, excellent explanation of 3 wood use. Best I have heard and to the point - no waffling. Clive
Just found this and it´s one of the best instructions I´ve seen. Now I can hit predictable shots with my new 3 wood. So big thanks.
Thanks for sharing this info Chris. I am going to implement this on my next range session
Wonderful explanation. Thanks, Chris!
Hands down the best instructional videos on RUclips IMO. 👊🏼
One of the simplest and yet one of the best explanations for hitting a wood.
This is a great video Chris, good job! A little tip for those who struggle to end their shots with their belt buckle and chest at target is to push the chest down towards the ball on downswing as this ensures rotation of hips, improves strike and removes slice. The old saying 'keep your head down' is actually 'keep your chest down' and is part of the reason why Chris' technique is so amazing to watch.
Thank you for this tip Chris. I love it.
Thanks for the video Chris. We have been told for so long to hit your woods like your driver and I tend to top mine. This technique could help me quite a bit I think. I was positioning the ball at my lead heel just like my driver. I'm going to try this next weekend when I go out. Thanks again.
Great tip Chris going to give it a go thanks and Merry Christmas to you and family
I watched this a year ago but I'm glad I came back and watched it again. I really need to move the ball back a bit in my stance and try to strike higher on the clubface. Thanks Chris.
Thanks for the tips - have been struggling with this club for a while and rarely hit on the course it as results not pretty. A lot more confident after viewing this as it really describes my issues and how to fix them. excited to get out there and try it on the 29th March
Very nice and timely tip for using 3 wood. Thanks a lot Chris!
This was amazing! Nice lesson.
Excellent explanation - visualising hitting the top half of the face 'off the floor' has got the loft back after several years of low runners.
Thanks Chris. Another great video. Can’t wait to get my 3 wood out and give it a go. It’s been hidden in the bag for too long!
Brilliant, just what I needed - and works! Thanks.
Used to be very in touch with my 3 wood. Going to use this winter practising a lot on my wood and long irons.
Tnx coach chris happy new year many videos to come godbless!
Always learning. Thank you! With the shutdown I haven’t been able to work much, but can still play. If there’s nobody behind me I can work on it.
Thanks Chris, really valuable. you have a glorious swing and in slow motion you can see how smooth it is at each phase... Brilliant
Thanks for this explanation! Having a tournament tmr morning and this help me as I usually suck at using the wood
Hi yes I needed this lesson thanks , I will try it out tomorrow. I really struggle with my hybrid 4 too always a bit right
Super helpful and not over technical made a big difference for me thank you
Chris thank you! one lesson and now I love all my 3 woods. Took a chance on corse and no more 6 iron for long shots. Been golfing 3 months and your lessons have helped so much my husband is proud to have me on course with him
Thank you so much
Great vid. Will try your techniques...Thanks Chris..
Love all your lessons. This one had the best impact on my game. The smallest divot after the ball has made my 3 wood the longest and straightest club in my bag. Thanx Chris!!
Lol how do you even know how to create a divot after the ball? It doesn’t even seem like it would be possibly to do 😂
Great explanations i've never been told before. Thank you, my fairway hits improved very much.
Great video mate! 👍🏼
As always I appreciate your detailed explanation. I’ve struggled as a “sweeper” who leans back, trying to help the ball into the air on the fairways. Your explanation of the 3W’s club-head design and the various changes to the lofting has helped me to better understand what’s going on, and I’m sure this will enable me to mentally visualize and correct the reasons that I’m topping the ball on the fairways. At best I’ve been drilling low rug-burners, and at worst the ball tends to just flips a few yards. Been trying to correct this key weakness in my longer fairway drives using the 3-wood. Hoping this will help reduce my strokes on the fairways and shorten my approach shots. It’s been a struggle for a couple years now, and I can’t wait to apply this advice to try to figure this shot out and get closer to par or at least a consistent bogey golf game. Thanks again!
I've not been playing quite as long as you but suffer terribly from the same problems you've mentioned. I just got a new 3 wood this week hoping it would help, and it has when I do all the things Chris just mentioned. I would add that, for me at least, it's essential to keep my leading arm straight on the way up but especially on the way down and finishing the shot makes all the difference. I'm looking forward to checking out Chris's stance. Today, although I hit some cracker shots at the driving range, I, like you was topping way too many. I hope this wonderful advice will help us both top fewer balls and bring us a little more consistency through a better understanding
Thanks for your thorough explanation of the club head,. Most helpful in understanding how to hit the challenging three wood..
Excellent explanation. Thank you. Now to try to put this into practice...
You know what they say. Begin with the end in mind. Yes, decide where you want your swing to finish. Thanks, Chris. Works for me.
Great instruction/tips and explanation on the 3 wd club face 👍
Amazing Video Chris🙏
Great video, my favorite 3 clubs : the lob wedge, putter and 3 wood!
Thank you for the helpful tip. I will be trying it out for my game :)
Chris, thanks for the tips. I struggle mightily with the 3 wood on the fairway, but I hit it well off the tee.
Another good one Chris!
Nicely explained. I have been struggling with fairway woods. 8 now have something to work on.
Great video and content plus your explanation of why you swing down at the ball is right on Thanks 👍👍
Clear explanation. Thank you so much
Effective tutorial, thank you
I finally added a 3 wood back to the bag - looking forward to utilizing these tips. I have hit it a few times and its either brilliant or terrible.
Great explanation. Thank you.
Excellent job Chris on explaining "bulge" on FW club face! Also, learned what causes low shots with the fairway woods. Ball position is definitely important and something that I am aware of when hitting these clubs. I think my main problem is moving through the ball properly. Good Job!
Thanks for the instruction
You've helped my game tremendously. Thank you!
Great info!
I like the idea of trying to contact the ball high on the face. I never thought about the face being "rolled" from top to bottom. Now I can hit stress free 3 woods!
Thank you so much Chris
Very Ryanesque...clear, concise, simple, spot one.
I watched this video a few days ago; I went to the range, nothing but tops and low hangers.
I re-watched the video yesterday; I Went to the range and hit proper 3 wood shots of the mat for the first time in my life.
Thanks, bro
just what i needed as a reminder :) had been overswinging and thinning balls all evening on the rage. - too far forward and leaning back, you got it :D
Really good explanation...thank you...
This video helped me thanks
Chris - enjoyed this tutorial. I struggle hitting 3, 5, and 20degree hybrid
off the fairway. I will go back to the range tomorrow to try to execute the descending
strike with ball position just above middle to front heel.
Probably the best 3-wood instructional video out there 🙌🏼 Love your take on this!!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it
Thanks Chris, sensible stuff.
Great tutorial Chris, have stopped using my 3 wood(user error), shall take this one the range, cheers. Posted on earlier lesson, backswing faults, should have mentioned i'm a high handicap swayer,, more to work on. Lots to go at during lockdown
Thanks for explaining more about the club head and how it changes the strike.
Yes, I second that. It helps me to do things more correctly when I understand why it needs to be done that way.
Thanks again for a good video as usual! I wish you could do a video in the future demonstrating how to hit 40-50 yard bunker shots! Or a video about shortgame tempo! Cheers ✌🏻
great vid thanks Chris..
Been struggling with understanding the 3 wood, thanks for this helpful tip. Looking forward to practicing it on the range and then on my game. Thank you
Hope it helps Stephen
The ball position has helped me thanks
Always love your content. You have helped me tremendously!!
Thanks Jason
This worked great for me!
I've been trying to "sweep" this club. UGH!. Thanks Chris. This make so much sense.
Good video!
Excellent instruction in less than 9 minutes!!!
Great stuff!
Very helpful. Thanks
Very helpful. I did try it to get a divot and it works for me. It 's better than trying for slide on top the grass. But as usual use full force, follow through and end in style. Good advice.
I don’t use my woods... usually use a hybrid. Playing this weekend so I’ll try it out thanks 🙏
Going to try to take this advice to the range this weekend
Well done!
Thank you Chris your instructions is so clear and usefull and it helped me so much it made my golf friends wonder who is the pro golf teaching me
Glad I found this video I was crushing the ball with the 3 wood at the range today
Great videos
Very helpful information I will practice the swing at the driving range. DF
Please more Fairway woods. Beginner golfer here. Loving the content
Amazing video
Thank you Chris
Very helpful....thanks
Thanks to you, we had a fantastic day! We will never forget this.
