Trying to FIX a BROKEN 100" Philips PROJECTOR - Philips Screeneo HDP1690

  • Hi, in this video I attempt to fix a very nice 100" projector made by Philips. It is called the Screeneo HDP1690, and it is portable with a very short throw. Ideal to place next to the wall that you want to project to.
It was sold on eBay as no power. I believe they were very expensive when they were released a few years ago.
Let's see if it can be fixed!
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

Also you should trust your gut more often 😉. I had to deal with many projectors in various classrooms when I taught radio theory. Almost all would have various issues at times and a combination of buttons needed to be pressed at start-up to get into the maintenance menus. Most of the time it was for resetting the lamp hours as a lot of projectors track how many hours the lamp has been in operation and will not turn on until the lamp is replaced (or hour count was reset). Great Video!

You probably have everything you need to do it (thicker gauge silicone cable, resistor, probe, heat shrink, stick, banana plug with a wall jack or some other way to connect the far end to ground. It will avoid arcing/damage and be much safer than bridging the leads with snips ;)

You should try doing some drone repair videos. They are really popular right now. And whether you do a cheap one from China or an expensive one I think people would really be into those videos now. So many people have them and so many people have broken ones. Obviously the ones with broken motors won’t be very interesting, but if you get some that have problems with the main boards, I’m sure loads of people would be interested.

At 5:20, the black heatsink in the top right corner looks like a corner broke off. Might indicate it took a really hard fall or bump to let that happen. The heatsink looks like to be over some kind of harddisk, probably for the firmware/software. If that corner took such a hard hit, the disk might be faulty - which would explain why it was stuck on the startscreen. Probably also good to put a new one in.

@@Mymatevince Hi Vince. I used to make my own projectors years ago using lcd panels, freznels etc they were great projects. I painted a screen with the maxxmudd paint formuler which adds reflective silver/aluminium to the paint which boosts the colour and contrast of the picture. It enables me to have the lights on in the room or even use it in the daytime and still have a good picture. The paint was very cheap compared to the same performance built screen. Works amazingly well and I still use the screen with my current 1080p Epson projector and looks so much better than just projecting on the wall. Here's the link to the maxxmudd forum if you are ever interested where they have the links to best paints, "for here in the UK too" , mixing ratios etc.

That's a real cool projector, perfect for "big screen" gaming or watching movies, like You said! The reason why it wasn't accepting the usb stick or SD-card most likely was, cause it was expecting them to be FAT32 formatted, where most newer, bigger SD-cards and usb sticks use exFAT partitioning, which it couldn't read. You can use linux or a windows program that can format large external storage space to fat32. I think it's simply called "fat32 formatter"That was a really great find someone gave up on too early. I wouldn't mind having one of those projectors myself!

I paid 100 SEK(about £12)for it because it wouldn’t start. I opened it up and there was a cable between the power supply that was loose. This was quite a technical fix, something a bit different to the usual stuff, I was wondering whether when you had all the boards disconnected, that the power was lost from an internal Back-up memory battery, which made it necessary to have to reload the software again.
Good fix though, got a nice bargain there!

Also remeber that the light only runs for so many hours (1500 or something depending on the light type.. usually there is a counter in the menu to see how long it has been on in total or per the light that is in now) Always let it cool down before moving it so the filament can cool down and it does not break when you move it.. if it's dropped while on.... the bulb can break as well.. you might not see it broken but the filament could still be...
