      Hello, I know this video isn't reviewing the TRM Neutron, or any knife, but I wanted to ask you a question. Is there any way to shorten a folding blade by an 1/8" or just enough to be under 3" mark for sure? I hate this stupid law in Illinois and want to be safe about making the TRM Neutron my daily carry. Thanks :)

    Hey Nick, huge fan of your channel and your reviews. Seldom disagree with you. However, the Toymaker Anduril firmware is actually pretty easy to use and is found in a ton of modern lights. You're just clicking way too slow :-)

      I agree with your position with nicks channel and this light. I'm very new to these lights, and this light is EASY to use. I don't use the special modes hardly ever, just battery check really.

    • @feliciaxedine9402

      "Toymaker" is indeed a good name. This is a toy, not a tool, in the sense that it's for people who will use their light and the modes repeatedly. It's not something for people who carry a light as a backup or as a "just in case" option. As a "toy" for people who love flashlights to use daily, the UI is great, but this is definitely not any sort of UI I'd put on a product for the general masses.

    • @monkpato
      @monkpato 2 года назад +2

      @@feliciaxedine9402 just because a flashlight has a ton of functions built in besides just on and off doesn't make it a toy. Just having a battery check option makes an Andúril flashlight a far better tool than one without.

  • @CerealReviewer
    @CerealReviewer 4 года назад +5

    I find it kind of weird to fault a light for having features you wouldn't use or care to learn. The on off and ramp features are pretty similar to your EDC light in a smaller package at a lower price with a brighter emitter. It would be pretty easy to just ignore all those other modes if you don't want to use them, which is what I do... it's like saying you dont like your car because it has seat warmers that you don't find useful. Just don't use them.

  • @RealLockheedMartin
    @RealLockheedMartin 4 года назад +20

    I don't understand how this isn't a good tool. I've never owned a "high-end" flashlight and I got one from the first wave of orders. If all you want is a flashlight that turns on and off, you have that. Press it once for on and again for off. Need it to be brighter? Press and hold. Too bright? Press and hold again. That's it. That's all 99% of buyers would ever care about. That's not difficult at all. Why complain that the impractical features are impractical to use?

      Ageeed! I really appreciate nicks channel, like im sure you may, but own this light and have JUST gotten into high lumen lights and I have NO problems running this. • @Fanuc_Operator1990

    • @lone1mis
      @lone1mis 4 года назад +1

      @@Fanuc_Operator1990 default settings is the highest lumens in smooth/stepped ramping is not 2,800. More like 1 to 700-750 at least. You can set it up where you can use 1 to 2,800 lumens on smooth/stepped ramp but the flashlight gets really hot. I have the EDC18 which is similar to this and set it up on smooth ramp (1-600 lumens) and stepped ramp (5-600 lumens/10 steps) for practical/daily EDC use... Yes, having a 2,800 lumen flashlight at the palm of my hand is great, but most of the time, i don't have the need to use its full power... As for the Anduril UI, I enjoy using it and had no problems memorizing all the click combos for certain features, but I have to agree with Nick. Flashlights like these are not for everyone and is catered to certain consumers.

    i dont get why flashlights cant have multiple buttons on them. i dont mind if it has one and it cycles through a few brightnesses and turns on and off, but when you have 40+ commands, maybe its time for a second button?

    • @cytherians
      @cytherians 4 года назад +6

      There are some flashlights with 2 buttons (one rear, one side) and even some with 3 buttons. To keep costs down, this does it all with just 1 button and it actually does the job. You just have to take it slow.

    • @Regolith86

      I'm ok with different modes, but the selection needs to be simplified. There should be at most two controls, a button for on/off and a separate button or preferably dial to select modes. Anything more than that starts to get confusing, especially if you need a specific mode in a hurry.

  • @DirkWerning
    @DirkWerning 4 года назад +8

    Totally agree it is a bit complicated. At the same point I simply use it for a on and off light. I have no need for strobe or flashing lights etc and for simple on/off I don't have an issue with this one, but for the 'special' features it's confusing and unnecessary.

  • @swe_nurse8121
    @swe_nurse8121 4 года назад +16

    I've carried The FW3T for a long time and an Anduril flashlight for even longer.
    You literally never have to access the special modes, but they are there if you want them or need them. Yes, it's complicated but it doesn't have to be. I have it on a medium ramping setting, if I need more power I click twice. If I need less light I hold the button down. I had a couple of problems the first couple of days, after that I haven't had a single problem.
    But it's definitely not for everyone.
    It offers quite extreme customization at the cost of simplicity.
    Edit: here's a more nuanced operating manual than Nick's: Push the button -> it turns on at the last intensity. Hold the button from off -> moonlight mode. Double click the button -> turbo. Hold the button when the light is on -> ramping up/down.

      It also randomly switches between degrees Celsius and degrees Fahrenheit. You’d think there’d be a simple toggle to change from C to F or F to C. But you would be wrong.

    The UI is crazy, I love the instructions with the arrows and curves, it's a thing of beauty in that it is totally over the top. I love that somebody sat down and programmed a device with all these options that has a single button. We live in a wonderful world. My main complaint is that on high this light can set things on fire and quickly becomes too hot to hold. In practice, I press once to turn it on, press and hold to adjust the light level, and press once to turn it off. Works great. If you want to adjust the rate of candle flicker in the candle flicker mode, I think you can do that too, but I'm not going to try.

    I have one. I think it's okay.
    I had 2 major issues with the light.
    One was QC was not at all there. I got a literally non functional light, and there was a very long list of common issues people were having which would result in the light not working when it arrived. Mine was a more uncommon issue which made it harder to figure out why it wasn't working. Maybe this isn't a big deal for flashlight geeks who are used to fiddling with it but I do expect if I buy a tool for it to work when I get it.
    Now that aside I agree the UI is completely nuts. I just don't use it. It works fine though as a click on off and hold to increase/decrease light flashlight but I can admit that leaving the utility there for you to potentially screw it up is an issue for someone who really just wants a basic light.
    My other major issue is the speed at which the light heats up if you're running it on high. This is the warmest flashlight I've had. Now it's not a huge issue, I usually only need a light for a few minutes, and I almost never need it on turbo or whatever the max setting is. But the fact that people felt the need to warn you that if it turns on in your pocket it might set your pants on fire is a negative for the casual user.

    since firmware source is available and driver is flashable you technically can reprog the ui if have the stuff to make it do what you want, exactly how you want and only that with no other modes. That said although know some who've done that I am used to anduril ui stock and tend to do no more than setup via in light and it lives in my pocket since last year and lives in smooth ramp mode with occasional moonlight and high/turbo with the manual shelf I set for them. It was never intended as an off the shelf alternative to big name ui's but more of a happy to meddle with it niche thing

      The firmware for this wasn't designed by Lumintop, it was designed by a firmware hacker named Toykeeper. She's developed several advanced, opensource flashlight interfaces. Having Anduril 2 onboard is an in-demand feature and a big selling point.
      There's no good reason to criticize it, simple functions like turning the light on and off and changing the brightness are simple and work pretty much like an Olight or Thrunight, etc. The advanced features are a bonus and don't get in the way when you don't need them.

  • @betelgeuse4138

    If you have issues with the lumintop fw3a the best thing to do it rest the light. Unscrew the whole light from the tail cap, hold the switch in, then while holding the switch in screw the light back onto the tail cap and hold it for a few moments and it will rest. Then try the steps.... from off fast click the switch 3 times but hold the switch till the mode turns on. Once the first mode is on, fast double click the switch and you will scroll through the modes. I own 8 of these lights and yes it took a moment but once you have it, it's awesome lol sorry you didn't like it but it truly is a great light for what it is. The fireflies e07 is a light I suggest looking into also. The lumintop tool AA 2.0 is a great edc light I can see you liking it more. It's simple but very powerful.

    You need to practice and understand the diff between press and click. Nothing on a programmable light is at a slow pace. Basically you need to be navigating the clicks and presses as fast as you can click. If you can’t click fast enough then sure maybe this isn’t a light for you or others like you. However the more you use it and get the rhythm down it’s a breeze. To your comment about them doing too much and over doing the UI for the common user; it’s not for the common flashlight user. It’s made for guys who like to tinker and feel like a high speed hard charger. Hopefully you’ve given it more practice in the year since making this.

    I like Anduril but it's not for everyone. First, you need to make sure the tailcap is tight. Then, you need to practice and speed up your clicks a little. Also, the FWAA uses Anduril 2.0 which has some slight changes to the UI, I believe.

    This light has been the biggest waste of money and pain in my ass...I purchased it from nealsgadgets as that’s what was recommended to me and it was missing an extra battery I ordered, I thought whatever I’ll just have one sent out things happen. TWO MONTHS after messaging him about the battery he just refunded me, not what I wanted but whatever I’d already bought multiple batteries at that point elsewhere. After that and barely using the light at all other then messing with it in the house and getting used to the UI it no longer works half the time. Sometimes it’ll turn on then all of a sudden it won’t. Yes the battery is fine I’ve tried with multiple different fully charged batteries. Unscrew the head, mess with battery, screw it back on it always blinks when screwing the head on and if it actually works after that a few hours later or the next day it won’t work again. Sooooo back to trying to contact nealsgadgets to get it replaced and I’ve never gotten a response from them and have fully given up on this POS and have never in my life experienced customer service as bad as I did from nealsgadgets. I’m not at all one to bash a company or product but this frustrated me to no end because I truly loved the idea, interface and concept of this light but after nothing but issues and ZERO help about how to even fix it if something is wrong (I’ve tried all the troubleshoots to my knowledge) I’m now out over $100 because I got the titanium model because like I said I was positive that I was going to love this light.

    Anyone with even a 101 level class in Human Interface Design will tell you that this light is a dismal failure at being useful to anyone other than a flashlight dork who wants an overpriced fidget toy.

    The basic UI is actually really close to the Neutron. The biggest differences are that it doesn't reverse direction automatically when adjusting brightness (you have to click and hold, so that the behavior isn't dependent on the mode), and that double-click from off only goes to the top of the ramp, not turbo (double-click from on is turbo). Normal use of the light does not require any of the rest - that's all either configuration, or gimmicks (well, battery check is useful).
    The failure to turn off was probably more of a hardware issue. This light's design for the signal tube requires that it be built precisely and its price point doesn't allow that. It should probably have some sort of spring contacts for that like dual-tube lights from Acebeam, Fenix, and Noctigon do.

  • @svtcontour
    @svtcontour 4 года назад

    You're taking way too long and I think you're not following the directions well. The light is also fully programmable so you can make it into a standard stepped light. As far as your comparison to the nutron, its kind of the exact same for general usage.

    I've had my FW3A for over 6 months. I absolutely love it. I can appreciate how some folks might be put off by the programming. It can get complicated. However... if you're able to learn how to use a new appliance, you can learn how to use this light. Note that use of the programming is optional. You can put the flashlight in "muggle mode" so you don't have to worry about how many times you click. I use the stepped ramping rather than continuous. Moonlight and turbo are very easy to access. The strobe mode is FUN--a handful of different options, including lightning storm and candle. Lots of options. You can get an 18350 tube and make this thing nearly 50% shorter. GITD inserts are available. For all you get at this price, it's an incredible value. I now have two! One runs 18650 with XPL-HI 3D (5000k) emitters and the other 18350 with SST20 (4000k) emitters.

      It's called The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon, or frequency bias. Once you know about something, you are more likely to register its usage or existence. The frequency of the thing happening hasn't changed, just your perception of it.

    I should also add that you're focusing on the settings that you dont even use on your other lights I think, but if you use it just like your other lights, it will work like your other lights :) I think for most people it will work fine. I lent mine to a friend for half a day at work and all I showed is on / off and brightness and they didnt have an issue once. So I'd say its a light for enthusiasts that can be used by normal users if they dont look at the manual and dont know the other modes are there.

    i was excited about this light when i found it, but agree it is not what i want to carry.
    i kept getting accidental activations in my pockets and the ui is complicated.
    i never got the glow bezel i wanted for it either. it sits next to my computer as the go to power house light.
    its definitely a cool one for the collection

    I have a microwave oven with tons of features and settings, but I’ve never used most of them. The same goes for my smart phone.
    I think this is what’s called “overdesign.”
    Flashlights seem to be going in the same direction. Some of the ones I have have a half-dozen or more modes (colors, strobe patterns, high and low intensity, Morse code, et all), but I don’t think I’ve ever used any except “On” and “Off.”

    Nick i bought the thrunite neutron after i saw your review, and then bought this light after reading the user manual.
    The ui is simular to the one in the neutron, If you just want to use the light normally... click from off > on double click from on> turbo hold from off> moonlight. This thing is smaller than the neutron in cr123 configuration yet it’s more powerful than the neutron in 18650 configuration, it just blows the neutron out of the water! Just read the manual first, and if you want to print the scheme as a quick reference, do a favor to yourself and print it in color...
