One the biggest misconceptions people have of Maine is that everyone is super friendly... after 9 years of living in central ME on a homestead, I've realized that most actual Mainers ( the ones that don't have to tolerate the tourist to survive 😁) are just as rude and moody as any southern New Englander.. and alot less trusting too until they get to know ya

Just FYI (for those who care), the state tree of the Pine Tree State is specifically the White Pine. That is significant because that's what the (British) Royal Navy used for the main masts of its sailing ships back in the day, with the White Pine being the tallest tree in the Northeast (over 100' tall). Mature trees can easily be 200 to 250 years old. Some white pines live over 400 years.
Please choose the coast as anywhere Inland would need to be on a lake it is so hot. We have weeks of 90° in the summer with 100% humidity. It's not cools very often in the summer though we do have days when I will make soup because it is chilly and raining. My uncle lived in Carrollton Texas and we went to see him. I lived in Morocco number of years later and it was the hottest summer on record one year but it didn't feel like Texas Heat. :-)

Grew up in central Maine not on welfare, but in a trailer on a half acre surrounded by farm land. Think you missed the mark on this section. It’s definitely poor, hard working folk who really struggle to survive. Maines biggest problem is the economy. No jobs and no housing (if you don’t want to live in a run down drug den or with your parents). I left for college and moved to a city far away where I can make enough money to live.., I miss Maine and it’s mountains every day.
As a Mainer who lives in Orono, U Maine Graduate.....and has lived in Kennebunkport, Biddeford, Bangor, Old Town, Levant, and all places in between. Born in Lewiston, a Social worker by profession. I lived in Scarborough for 10 years, loved Maine, came to Pa and the part of the state I live in has been invaded by New York City dwellers and people from NJ fleeing their high property taxes. They come here, traffic increased, school taxes increased, green space is disappearing, wildlife are being pushed out of their habitats and home prices in my neighborhood start at around $300,000. Don’t let that happen to your beautiful state, but I don’t know how you can stop it from happening especially in southern Maine.

Oregon is about the most like Maine that I could reasonably find after studying all the states years ago...but the valley is a milder climate than Maine.

Born and raised. A lot of beautiful (spaced out) locations throughout the state to visit. A nice state if you enjoy hiking, kayaking, camping etc. It’s especially nice if you own (or know someone with) a year round camp on a lake. The downfalls, - often boring, long winters, a lot of unattractive people, a high number of the population living off welfare, a lot of drugs, not a diverse option of career opportunities, high taxes, laws that don’t make sense.
@ExposingMiLabs: He completely lost credibility going there. Everyone ironically parks across the street at the better place and backs up traffic for miles by slowly ambling across Route One to wait 1/2 an hour at Red's hellhole. News flash: that $25 lobster they pay a fisherman $3 for tastes the same everywhere. 10 cent hot dog buns are nothing special. Make your own, hot and fresh instead of that dump. Red's got famous by being the first place to stop along the water after tourists jumped off the freeway to follow the coast. Lazy travel writers keep going there because the last guy did.

I live in Connecticut and have driven into ‘the county’ several times (sales rep). It never ceases to amaze me.... if two cars left New Haven CT on I-95, 1 northbound, 1 southbound. Most Mainers don’t eat lobsters regularly. I think most lobsters are eaten by tourists or shipped out of state. When we first moved to Maine we ate lobster a couple times a month. But the novelty quickly wore off and we only had lobster once or twice a year after that. Lobster doesn’t have much taste and it’s a messy pain to eat. In college they had a cookout where you could get a lobster or a steak. Most of the students from Maine (including me) picked steak. All the out of staters got lobster.

"The deep south of the north"...having lived in central Maine for 16 years, and spent a whole lot of time in the deep south of the US, I completely agree.

Yes Mary it's true ❤️
Just FYI (for those who care), the state tree of the Pine Tree State is specifically the White Pine. That is significant because that's what the (British) Royal Navy used for the main masts of its sailing ships back in the day, with the White Pine being the tallest tree in the Northeast (over 100' tall). Mature trees can easily be 200 to 250 years old. Some white pines live over 400 years.
