Farmers are bailing out; they're selling their land and too many buildings are going up and spreading out: more plats and strip malls where their once was open land. Narragansett has a fence up and charge for what once was free. And now the pristine Scituate Reservoir is shredded. Our beloved state is becoming 'Potterville'. But that narrative crack about feeding the lower class in Providence is an ugly miss understanding! My state would not allow returning African American citizens the opportunity to receive veterans benefit after WW II.. I'm 66 years old, my white father was offered what was denied to his fellows. Becoming middle class was a matter of government backed assurances and not merely a generalized 'vague hope' and "distant possibilities' for subsequent generations. I’ve lived in a number of states, including Texas. Rhode Island has a certain sense of pride for their state that is a cut above most states I’ve lived, except for Texas.
RI is the birthplace of independence in the US. We were the first to defy the British when we burned the Gaspee, prior to the Boston Tea Party. I love my home state #401forever
@@snapdragnful Actually the real reason was financial. RI was printing its own paper money which they would no longer be allowed to do after signing. They were broke then and still are. You’re welcome too!
Bunch of puss**s now. Gina raimondo is the most corrupt governor in the history of mankind and rhode islanders sit back and allow her to get away with it all. While buddy who actually cleaned the fkkn state up pulls almost 5 years in a cell.
As a fellow Rhode Islander I will add the biggest problem with RI people is alot of people here think they deserve more, want more and always think someone is going to screw them. As a whole it's a great state that just needs more grateful optimistic minded residents and drivers. Don't blink if your driving through Providence or you'll miss it lol. Come visit but please don't stay, we already have too many people and they're missing what I just mentioned.
I left Austin and came to Rhode Island, unintentionally. I was originally looking for a place in Massachusetts, but a sublet became available in Providence, so I took it out of desperation. I am looking again to go to Massachusetts. It's just too ridiculous with the potholes and prices here.
Thanks for the great video, Nick. I lived in RI during the early 1980s. Overall, I greatly enjoyed the experience, but as a young professional person coming from the west coast, there were many things that struck me immediately. Some of these have likely remained unchanged over the past 35-40 years. Here are a few of them. 1. There is an incredible amount of colonial history everywhere. Beautiful architecture. 2. The accents and everyday vocabulary of some RI natives were baffling at first, but I eventually got used to them. 3. Some people seemingly had little knowledge or interest in the world beyond their immediate surroundings. 4. Being from the west, I was seemingly considered a "barbarian" by some, regardless of education, affluence, etc. 5. Driving on busy streets without painted lines to delineate lanes, which was the norm, can be terrifying. Some locals thought my concern was hilarious. 6. Some of the freshest and best seafood in the world, at decent prices. Dining out was wonderful. 7. Things I often thought were decaying and decrepit were often considered quaint and lovely by many. 8. Handsome colonial-style houses were the norm. Anything else might be an unsaleable white elephant. 9. Many rusted-out cars, caused by salted roads in the wintertime. 10. Horseshoe crabs all over the very crowded summer beaches. 11. A strong upper-class "yacht" vibe in some places, like Newport. 12. Distinctly ethnic parts of town in the larger cities, especially Providence. 13. Ice skating on frozen ponds in the winter. 14. Sometimes cool reception of people from outside the 5 New England states (i.e. RI, MA, ME, NH, and VT). 15. Seemingly abrupt and impolite behavior of some people on the street, in shops, etc. 16. Burning leaves in the fall could make the air hard to breathe. 17. Lots of natural stone such as granite and slate used everywhere, rather than concrete. Street curbs, walkways, etc. Beautiful. 18. Slate roofs on many older houses, which could last almost forever. Beautiful. 19. Strange requirement to hire a lawyer to buy or sell a house. 20. Mysterious stone walls in the forests, left behind by 19th-century farmers who abandoned their fields and moved west. 21. Many common terms seemed strange. e.g. A "cabinet" might be a milkshake, and the "cleansers" were dry cleaners. 22. Extreme humidity and mosquitos in late summer and fall. Screened porches and air conditioning were important. 23. Little street crime in Providence neighborhoods with alleged Mafia residents, who allegedly terrorized the thugs. 24. Strong Ivy League alumni presence in many regional businesses.
Very interesting and informative video. I always learn something new about my home state. Interesting to see the varying perspectives of those who live in RI. Sometimes you can tell where someone may be from by their comment. RI moves at the perfect pace for me. Although a small state, generally speaking, if you're from the urban areas, outside of going to the beaches and state University, most don't venture into other areas. Its a culture shock to them. Some can't relate to what it is that makes someone a true "Rhode Islander". Its just not part of their experience as much as it might be for others in the surrounding suburban and rural areas. Some of this is due to how diverse PVD and other cities are. I grew up around all Cape Verdeans, Dominicans, Ghanaians, Haitians, Indigenous Peoples(Natives), Nigerians, Liberians, Puerto Ricans, Southeast Asians, etc. I've been immersed in diversity my whole life in RI which isn't marketed or rarely covered. The accents and way of talking are different depending on varying neighborhoods in PVD as well - West End, Washington Park/South Side, Smith Hill, East Side, and many others have a unique distinction in they way they talk despite being from the same city. There is that mix of Brooklyn and Boston accent that serves as the foundation of our accents tho. But I loved coffee milk and still enjoy a good clam chowder and clam cakes!
there is also a difference in speech between Cranston, Warwick, Johnston, West Warwick, etc. not just in Providence. I am a Rhode Islander, born and bred going on 72 years now. I've traveled to more than 10 countries and nearly half the states. I love this place the best.
As a life long (68 yrs) Rhode Islander,,,I must say,, you pretty much "pegged it" but unless you've live here as many years ya might not understand the love we True Rhode Islanders have for the "Biggest little state in the union." I really enjoyed watching this video,,,, thanks ....

Very nice video. One other thing I've noticed about Rhode Islanders is that they have a very funny idea of time and distance. Distances that are around the corner to people in most places are considered 'way too far away' in Rhode Island.
Yep... When I 1st moved here I lived without a car for 4 months. People at work freaked out to hear that I would walk 40 minutes to work and 40 minutes home

We call it “ The Pothole Shuffle” .... it’s something we practice when we get our learners driving permit, and we can swerve around a fruit fly at 65 mph without crossing the lines into someone else’s lane ......well , most of the time.
It's the potholes. People trying to avoid them so they don't pop another tire, lose their oil pan or they don't move the pothole was bigger than they thought so they swerve hitting another vehicle. Also everything forgets that our highways are the path to whomever is driving going up North.
Well Crayon of darkness.... there isn’t enough time here to explain the crooked politicians and where our automobile tax money goes .... the short answer is this, the only way to fix the potholes here ....is to move out of RI.... don’t look back ... no really , you’ll hit a pothole or drive right off one of our brand new bridges!
I love living here. Every season is beautiful and pronounced. Summers in Newport, all silver blue and gold, fall with its brisk mornings, folliage, apples, pumpkins, Pats games on Sundays and Halloween hayrides, winters can be brutal or mild, but there's always great skiing 2-3 hours up 95 and spring is my favorite, that smell of new vegetation on those first couple of warm sunny days after a long hibernation, It's four distinct seasons, the scenery is always changing. Then there's the history, architecture, different cultures, music, food, whatever, it's all here. I've been all over this great nation and to me this is the crowning jewel.
I'm so glad you appreciate all that this state has to offer. My tolerance for the cold has greatly diminished in recent years, so I struggle to enjoy fall and spring as much as I used to, but I wish I still could. The winters really are pretty dismal around here, though. That's why we've got T.F. Green Airport to act as a shuttle service for everyone to get down to Florida in the winter! 😁
OMGGGG, this made me smile so big. I was just in Providence yesterday cruising around trying to decide where I wanna buy my first house. I miss New England so much! Also obsessed with and very much miss my clam cakes and chowdah. They have no idea here in Philly.

Hey, yous-guys! I grew up in Providence, summers in Matunuck and rode motorcycles all over little Rhody and south eastern Massachusetts including Cape Cod. Worked on Block Island in the summer when I was 17 years old. A truly fantastic place to grow up in. Used to go to Almacs on the East Side, Shepards and the Outlet company downtown . I could walk downtown from our apartment, it was that close. Also worked on the Block Island ferry in the summer. A great way to grow up!
I used to go to the Almacs in Wakefield and rent videos from there! It must have been fun working on Block Island during the summer. I once went to a great clam bake there on Labor Day.
I spent my first 15 summers in Mary Carpenters Beach Meadow. The Casino, the Sea View, and about 150 feet more is beach than today. As you said, a wonderful place to grow up.
I always stoped there when driving from CT to the Cape. The roads are very bad. It always gave me a priceliess nostalgic feeling of going back in time.
Just something that bothered me a bit, as a Rhode Islander: East Providence =/= the east side of Providence. East Providence is actually its own city, though your description of Providence's East Side was pretty accurate to how the actual East side is; its where Brown is located, so there are a lot of students, as well as wealthier people in the area. Still nice to hear SOMEBODY talk about us though!
My Dad's family all settled in East Side of Providence. Back in the 60's. Whenever we drove through to visit my grandmother. He would always recall what houses he used to live in, and which floor. As well as his friends and extended family. That whole area was all portuguese for decades.
My dad was born and raised in Central Falls, then ran off to join the Navy. That my mom's parents offered land to build a house on is why I'm a Virginian. Our family made quite a few trips back up there when I was growing up, and sometimes some of them would come down here during the summer. I remember no one owning their house. I remember helping my grandmother make ravioli. She was made in Italy, but born here. My dad's younger sister worked for Hasbro, and got us uniforms for GI Joe back when those were separate, and there were a variety of uniforms available. A distant relative's father owned a bar, now long since closed. The last time we went up there as a family was over 40 years ago. I went back about five years ago, as a side trip from a convention I attended in Connecticut. One of the cousins i had there is a truck driver. Another died of cancer at 31. Not sure of the others...
This was fun, Nick. 😉 I used to drive to T. F. Green Airport in Warwick, RI when I lived in MA because it was closer and cheaper than flying out of Boston’s Logan Airport.
I was born, raised and live in Rhode Island. I love it here. I will never move away. Best place in the world to me. 3 hours from New York, and 1 hour from Boston, MA. There is no serious traffic on the high way in RI. Its a 10 minute or less drive to almost anything. The views of the Ocean are fantastic. The fried squid is delicious. Federal Hill restaurants are fantastic. Newport RI is beautiful, and Jay Leno owns a mansion there. HP Lovecraft hung out in Providence back in the day and so did Edger Allen Poe. Home of Brown University. Taylor Swift lives in Watch Hill of Westerly, RI part of the year. We have Coffee Milk, coffee ice cream, Dell's lemonade, calamari, shrimp and Lobsters or how we say it lobstahs. Of course RI has its problems. But I love it here, they will bury me here.
Thanks for showing that state pride I have seen in Rhode Island over the years--and which is certainly well-deserved! HP Lovecraft is said to have referred to Jenckes Street in Providence as "The Vertical Street." If you've ever been there, then you know why. . . . I love how there are a bunch of stones placed at the bottom of Jenckes Street, on Benefit Street. They were originally placed there to stop horses from crashing into the house on the other side of them. Because the street is so steep, it was hard for horses pulling carriages down it to stop quickly enough. It's just one example of the seemingly endless historical treasures in our state. Love it!
Most accurate video about Rhode Island on the internet. Lifelong Rhode Islandeh here. It's small but the communities are distinct, and again, accurately characterized in this video. Most locals don't, but it's so much fun to travel more than fifteen minutes from home and explore the whole state, find new favorite mom and pop Italian restaurants, ice cream, donuts, or clam cakes. Or trek to a new beach. It's poorly managed, people talk about leaving, some do, but I haven't had my fill yet. I'm suddenly craving a Dels lemonade.
The food here is amazing. We have so many restaurants since the students that came here to become chefs are staying and opening their own restaurants. We basically have everything but New Orleans flavors unless I haven't found it yet. 🤔
As someone who grew up and owned a business in Rhode Island. I can tell you Rhode Island is beautiful but it's also very corrupt and taxes is ridiculously high.
For a RUclipsr who has never lived here for a long time. A lot of this is spot on and I'm impressed you got some of the little things only Rhodey's know about. Although you forgot about Iggy's and our doughboys and clamcakes. I suggest coming back here to try it out. It may be a small state but it does pack a punch.
Yeah, I probably should have mentioned Iggy's doughboys to Nick. (Clamcakes do actually make a brief appearance in the video during the part where Nick talks about the ways we prepare clams.)

You pretty much nailed it. The only thing you missed was how much Rhode Islanders fear leaving their state, even if the leave near a border, which most do. I know one Rhody, wealthy guy, whose summer home is on the other side of town from his winter house. It’s too scary to cross the border.

@@Closertotruth2 Because we insisted on freedom of religion. You're welcome.
Lived her for 43 years . It sucks
I grew up in CT and did a lot of traveling through RI and I always loved that state. Especially the beaches and Westerly.
As a Rhode Islander who has lived here my whole life this video is extremely accurate
Thanks for showing this little state some love! I moved here from Texas 2 years ago and we absolutely adore Rhode Island 🤍 💙 🧡
So cool!
AWESOME STUFF!!!

Nice!!
there is also a difference in speech between Cranston, Warwick, Johnston, West Warwick, etc. not just in Providence. I am a Rhode Islander, born and bred going on 72 years now. I've traveled to more than 10 countries and nearly half the states. I love this place the best.

Very nice video. One other thing I've noticed about Rhode Islanders is that they have a very funny idea of time and distance. Distances that are around the corner to people in most places are considered 'way too far away' in Rhode Island.
funny.

Suuure.....that's why my insurance doubled when I moved here, even though I've never had an accident in my life...
It's the potholes. People trying to avoid them so they don't pop another tire, lose their oil pan or they don't move the pothole was bigger than they thought so they swerve hitting another vehicle. Also everything forgets that our highways are the path to whomever is driving going up North.
Why are the potholes so bad 🤯🤯 I’ve lived here for 3 years & literally never see roads so bad.
Learning to dodge potholes comes in handy when you have to get around idiots on the highway. Skills.
From NYC. I Went fishing in Rhode island with a couple friends and I didn't want to leave. It's like heaven there
I love living here.
I love and miss Rhode Island so much! I was born and raised in RI and after High School I went to the he military.

I really enjoyed this video. Very entertaining. Thank you!😂❤
I always stoped there when driving from CT to the Cape. The roads are very bad. It always gave me a priceliess nostalgic feeling of going back in time.
Love him or hate him, you can't deny that mayor "Buddy Cianci" literally & physically changed the city of Providence forever. RIP
Agreed. East Providence is Little Portugal, but don’t tell that to Fall River where they have the Portuguese Slide, I mean the Charles Braga bridge...
I do wish he talked about the west side a little. Instead of just gangs... dexter parks amazing armory for one.
Pretty cool to have special access to GI Joe uniforms!
Checking this out before my day gets crazy - looks good! I like the big blue bug. In NYC we have big black bugs. Thumbs up.

I need to see more of it!
Thanks, Andrew! That's quite the compliment!
