Very well said Marko. What I also love is that throughout the piece you can hear those quadruplets panned left and right and played on different instruments (1:21) is a good example. It sounds to me like there is some insects buzzing or some toads croaking or other wildlife all around you as you walk through the great marshes. This is such a well composed piece of music.
Not weakest... You just have to leverage your insane tempo with wyverns. Fastest tier 6 unit to get and easy to mass in hives. Ofc if game goes lategame and you sit in your biom you gonna get spanked
And I always play Bron with his wasilisks at start. I love this town becaese gorgons, who have deth sight, and because dragonflis with big speed. Sorry for my english lvl.
Actually, Fortress is one of the strongest towns in HoMM3. They have a decent 1st lvl creature, upgraded version of lizard under bless can do wonders, having excellent health and defence and dmg range 2-5, they have the fastest lvl 3 creature, that helps you to cast spell first in most of battles, a sturdy 4th lvl crature, that can turn enemies to stone, so you can forgett about them for a few turns, THE MIGTHY MOOS that are nightmare for any lvl 7 creature, viverns are qute weak, but you can get them on day 1-2, and also enlarge their ranks from the Dragon Fly Hives, so their amount will grow immenesly, and you have mighty chaos hydras. If they attack more than one stack of enemies, they already deal more damage than almost any lvl 7 creature, and if there are 3 or more, they become the most efficient damage dealer in the game.
I agree. The mighty gorgons are bread and butter for this town their power for lvl 5 is just.. Especially their passive right? Deathly gaze? I cant remember the name correctly but vs tough level opponents they are a MUST HAVE.

You know what makes this game so special compared to every other heroes game? The bestiary. Seriously, every single unit is so well aesthetically designed with so many little details. I mean look at the chaos hydra for example; she has five heads and they're all different! Now look at the Hydra from H4 or H5 and what do you see? A generic multi-headed snake with legs? Yep. Heroes 3 FTW.

Suddenly it turns around, looking in your direction. It spots you and dashes away into the swamp. Where is it now? Have you lost it? You start to listen, trying not to make any noise. And you hear it, building up... Low pitched sound, that buzz... It's getting louder and louder, until it surrounds you and turns into a wave of dragonlies appearing from among the trees, flying past you, pushing you, and making you run with the rest of their hive. Suddenly few of them gather around you and pick you up off the ground, carrying you over the muddy swampland, between the trees, mushrooms and flowers, into the depths of the bog. While flying, you catch the glimpse of a structure, it's walls high and powerful, as tall as the tallest trees. You're carried over bridges binding the towers of trees together, passing by men with heads of dogs and lizards as they go about their business as if nothing really happened. You fly over ponds with monstrous creatures snapping their jaws at each other, praying the hive wouldn't drop you down there. And as suddenly as it started, your journey comes to and end. Dragonflies leave you at the edge of the swamp, in the middle of the road and disperse. Was it all a dream?
I've never been a huge Fortress-player. I've always heard the semi-lame intro to the theme. But then I let it linger for a bit while I did other stuff, and MY GOD! It's brilliant!!

I haven't played this game in a long time, but my younger brother and my dad play still. This is my favorite team, I'd skip week after week and stay in the fortress to amass a mighty army. When the hydras came near, they would vanquish every creature in striking distance! The memories!
okay, seriously, the music in homm3 is so grandiously and masterly composed that for a long period of time I personally thought they just borrowed it from master composers of romanticism (something Grieg could have done, similar to In the Hall of the Mountain King), just like they did it in a number of other games, not necessarily of the same genre. It simply sounded too familiar, too good to be composed by someone for the puposes of the game, something I heard in my elementary in music class.
Paul Romero is truly one of the most talented composers in the entire gaming industry. Such bright, memorable music that gives goosebumps, emphasizes the environment, the context. You still need to look for such music, there are very few places where you will find such music. And the coolest thing is that games usually have 1-3 cool soundtracks (with the exception of The Witcher 3, or the new BG3), and Heroes 3, thanks to Paul, consists of almost 100% cool soundtracks, every city, every battle, every biome Google Translate rus->eng, sorry for mistakes
Actually, if you get lots of Knowledge and Expert skills like Intelligence, Mysticism, and any kind of magic (Air is the best option) as a Fortress character, the magic is actually useful. I once had nearly 100 mana points with a Beastmaster.
When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. And that one sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, and then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that’s what you’re going to get, Son, the strongest castle in all of Erathia.

The best thing of this town and composted music is, that i want to be there. You want to visit gorgon lair and pay gold for recruit mighty gorgons to army, train with lizarmens archery and also sit at tavern and heard rumors etc. That is the wonderfull zhing of this town.
Safe and beautiful place, if you're one of the crew. Personally I would fear more walking around Tower. I don't trust these snake women with blades, and genies are unpredictable and titans don't even consider you.
Really powerful town. Magic? They don't need it. They just go and smash with tenacious defensive legion. Chaos hydras, mighty gorgon with Tazar can be terrible nightmare for any enemies.
Bron the Beastmaster. Yeah, he's unique since he's actually the only hero capable of starting with 4th level units to engage the enemy. And with Beastmaster 4 DEF skill rate and Basilisk thick hide AND petrify. How can anyone say no to him in Day 1 of the game?
you gotta hand it to this faction, it has dragon flies, mighty gorgons, wyvewyrms and also hydras :) also one of the best theme song. love this one and stronghold too
When you have 3 towns of this kind - you get more troops than you can buy. Even more, storming strongholds is difficult in fact, while reinforcing them with fresh units is much easier.
At first i hated them too but in time you learn to like them since you have to use them at full potential to win! Their theme song on the other hand is great and cinematical with the town and it's swampy theme!
I wish they would redo this piece with a real orchestra without any modification (not with added vocals, not messing around with tempo, etc) so me (and my neighbors) can listen to it on max volume. :'(
@creamie123 it works little different than you said. every gorgon gives you 10% which is cummulative. it means every next gorgon gives 10% to kill unit (2 gorgons = 20% to kill one unit, 7 gorgons = 70% to kill one unit etc). if you have number of gorgons that is multipliable by 10, you gain 100% for killing certain ammount of units etc (23 gorgons gives 100% to kill 2 units and 30% to kill third unit). phoenix' rebirth works same as death stare.
gorgons are one of the best mobs of their levels, other good mobs of same level are the monks from castle, the dendroids from rampart and the rocs from stronghold what is cool beside this (with the exception of the monks building who need special resources) u can make their building in the 1st week even on impossible (this depends on how soon u find the wood or ore required though) correction: gorgons are lev 5 mobs, wyverns are lev 6

Not only all units are detailed, they have somewhat of a similar feel to them. It's in the aesthetics, dood.

My favourite theme of HoMM3.
I am still proud of my giant dragonflies and my Gorgons.
I always imagine a moth flying around the fire and burning in the end when I was listening to this
My favorite faction back then, still felt they were a bit weak, but it fascinated me too much to pick another one
Guys, I dont know about any of you, but if you listen to the Shooting Star Theme from the Stardust Movie (2007) at 0:52, and listen to this Fortress Theme, 0:47 - it is insanely similar, the inspiration I think was clear?

The best thing of this town and composted music is, that i want to be there. You want to visit gorgon lair and pay gold for recruit mighty gorgons to army, train with lizarmens archery and also sit at tavern and heard rumors etc. That is the wonderfull zhing of this town.
Safe and beautiful place, if you're one of the crew. Personally I would fear more walking around Tower. I don't trust these snake women with blades, and genies are unpredictable and titans don't even consider you.
I miss this town
Never liked this race, but their town had the best music, hands down.

Really powerful town. Magic? They don't need it. They just go and smash with tenacious defensive legion. Chaos hydras, mighty gorgon with Tazar can be terrible nightmare for any enemies.

Bron the Beastmaster. Yeah, he's unique since he's actually the only hero capable of starting with 4th level units to engage the enemy. And with Beastmaster 4 DEF skill rate and Basilisk thick hide AND petrify. How can anyone say no to him in Day 1 of the game?

When you have 3 towns of this kind - you get more troops than you can buy. Even more, storming strongholds is difficult in fact, while reinforcing them with fresh units is much easier.

At first i hated them too but in time you learn to like them since you have to use them at full potential to win! Their theme song on the other hand is great and cinematical with the town and it's swampy theme!

My god those Gorgons are so damn tough
I was played a lizardman when I was little. I loved being the sinister creatures.
I wish they would redo this piece with a real orchestra without any modification (not with added vocals, not messing around with tempo, etc) so me (and my neighbors) can listen to it on max volume. :'(

it works little different than you said.
every gorgon gives you 10% which is cummulative. it means every next gorgon gives 10% to kill unit (2 gorgons = 20% to kill one unit, 7 gorgons = 70% to kill one unit etc).
if you have number of gorgons that is multipliable by 10, you gain 100% for killing certain ammount of units etc (23 gorgons gives 100% to kill 2 units and 30% to kill third unit). phoenix' rebirth works same as death stare.
gorgons are one of the best mobs of their levels, other good mobs of same level are the monks from castle, the dendroids from rampart and the rocs from stronghold
what is cool beside this (with the exception of the monks building who need special resources) u can make their building in the 1st week even on impossible (this depends on how soon u find the wood or ore required though)
correction: gorgons are lev 5 mobs, wyverns are lev 6
