  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses is home to a diverse cast of great characterization, and Marianne von Edmund is certainly one of many well-written characters. Today, I'll be discussing just how important of a character she is. Not necessarily for the plot of Three Houses, but for how important her themes tie to real life circumstances.
    Below are the video chapters:
    0:00 - Introduction
    0:21 - Who is Marianne?
    1:08 - Marianne's Positive Change Arc
    1:54 - Marianne's "Lie"
    4:59 - Marianne's Truth
    8:41 - The story that needed to be told... for us.

    I didn't like Marianne at first because she was such a Debbie Downer, then I did her Paralogue. The implication that her parents were kidnapped and murdered by people like that "scholar" kind of explains why she is so standoffish. Her A-support with Lorenz, Dimitri, and Byleth are simultaneously the saddest and most heartwarming, to me.

      I adore her and Lorentz's support chain so much. They're my favorite ship in the game.

    An interesting tidbit I saw somewhere: if you head into Marianne’s room at the monastery, she actually has an extra chair in the centre. This appears to be placed under one of the rafters, indicating the possibility that she may have been planning to hang herself (in short, rope tied over the rafter, stand on chair, kick away chair).
    Yeah, this game is dark as hell sometimes, but it is a story that, for want of a better description, just gets it, and Marianne is arguably the best example of this.

    • @ajch22
      @ajch22 Год назад +18

      It is strongly implied she kills herself if you play any other route that isn't Golden Deer and you don't recruit her before the timeskip, as she never shows up as an enemy after the five years have passed. The chair in the middle only shows up after the timeskip as well if I am not mistaken.

    Marianne truly the best character in 3Houses/Hopes, and have best support with Dimitri

  • @Polomance862
    @Polomance862 Год назад +68

    The sad part is though, Marianne's entire story hinges on Byleth's involvement. Even if Byleth isn't A-supporting her, if Byleth doesn't bring her into his/her class; Marianne does not return for the War Phase five years later. It's implied that whatever happens in those five years... Marianne didn't have the will to keep fighting. It's implied because of her A-Support with Byleth; Marianne.. succeeded in her prayer's plea. The small things matter to people, and all it took was Byleth giving Marianne a chance in his/her class. And it's quite tragic because of this.. Small things like kindness and giving people a chance, or instilling just a little bit of confidence can do wonders for those struggling.
    I think that's why of all the characters of Three Houses, Marianne is the most stand-out character. Even to the likes of Dorothea, Ferdinand, Dimitri, and Ashe. Her pain is real, her story resonates well to anyone who has felt lost or overcome with grief and stress.

      I hadn't really thought about it like that, but laid out like this... yeah, that's a rather grim possibility that's likely true. I do think it's still possible that Marianne may also be laying low during the war, considering all she wanted was a quiet life away from everyone. Though that's probably just me being in denial for her sake... lol. I still do hope that's the case, but still can't rule out the darkest outcome given everything you outlined.

      I think this summarizes 3 houses writing as a whole, you have nuanced situations where if the player doesn't interact with them, they fucking kill themselves like it's dark souls, but at the same time byleth is so super duper cool and awesome (and is god) that ONLY byleth can save marrianne from cringe offscreen death

    • @samflood5631
      @samflood5631 8 месяцев назад

      So what you’re saying is that is Marianne is the sort of canon love interest to Byleth?

    • @Shalakor
      @Shalakor 7 месяцев назад

      @@bragsaint7824 I mean, to be fair, in dark souls games the player character helping out another character is just as likely, if not more likely, to be the catalyst for that character ending up dead than it has any chance of saving them from an otherwise ill fate. In Elden Ring basically nearly every NPC is better off if you don't interact with them than if you do, every quest line increasing the death toll rather you're killing them yourself or not, so maybe not the best comparison.

    Marianne is probably my favorite character in videogames. There's something about her that is just so deeply resonating to me and my own life. She and her support partners also helped me to help me through my own depression and insecurities, that of having a purpose, that of imagining a future, that of being a burden. Isolating yourself because you feel like you'd only bother people...that is what happened for a big part of my life, and to see a character that perfectly represents how I felt back then truly affected me. It also helped that underneath all that was such a kind and empathetic person, the fact that she never lost her heart even through all that also was inspiring.
    I'd also like to point out how sweet her support and paralogue with Hilda in Three Hopes is. While Hilda can't help her unpack all that she has, she's *there*, and she takes the bullet for Marianne and actively makes her more confident and happier by just showing her affection no matter what. And sometimes we just want that, someone who's on our side no matter what.

    It's small but i always found a small comment she makes post timeskip, which she calls her younger self "arrogant" for taking life so lightly. It's an interesting change, her self loathing from a "lack of worth" changing to a general disdain for that entire thought process.

    It's honestly kinda nice to see some positive videos about 3H's writing since hating on everything about the game is the new cool thing to do, apparently.
    Marianne also has a very nice support with Bernie in Hopes

      Sadly, most of FE community is deprived of positivity. It's part of the reason why I'm trying to spread positive vibes throughout my videos. Way too much opposition over conflicting opinions to find a common ground.
      3H just gets hit especially hard these days because of 1) Engage being the new game now, so trashing on the previous game in favor of the new one has always been a nonsensical thing with certain groups of this community. And 2) its actual flaws are overexaggerated by its haters. Now that the game's 4 years old and recency bias is no longer present, it keeps getting unfairly compared to previous titles for not following the same formula. Which makes no sense to me, considering it's a staple for each FE game to get more innovative to differentiate itself from the other installments.
      I'm sure with another year or two (or when the next FE game comes out), most of the 3H hate will fizzle out.

    Im pretty sure all of us at least has or was a Marianne. When we just feel like giving up (not necessarily on life - job, school, ...etc) and go to peace (not necessarily death - gaming, drinking,...etc). But we all have pushed through (with or without help).

    Something really dark about her is apparently from what I've heard, if you don't have her on your team before the timeskip(either being recruiting or joining Golden Deer), she won't appear at all during the time skip. So if we take into account her A support with Byleth, it could be implied that if she isn't on your team, she ends her own life.

    I went Golden Deer first and _immediately_ wanted to protect Marianne at all costs, vowing to recruit her on every subsequent run with the other houses. That desire only increased when I did her paralogue... and was accompanied by an urge to reach through the screen and strangle that piece of shit Crest scholar. (Also her A support with Byleth made me want to give her the biggest hug. GAH I LOVE HER SO MUCH)

    I love the romance between Byelth and Marianne the same way I ship Byleth with Dorothea, Shamir, Sylvain, Dimitri and Jeritza. Some might say that Marianne’s romance with Dimitri is good, but Byleth helped her open up a lot and break out of her negative Nancy shell. She spent her whole life being harassed by Crest Scholars and being treated as a monster because of her crest which has a history of turning into a dangerous beast that kills anyone on sight. And what’s really depressing, if you don’t recruit Marianne before Edelgard starts the Five Year War, it’s implied that she committed suicide, probably out of depression. Marianne’s proposal picture is romantic given the way Byleth holds her cheek as a sign of accepting her as a person, not a monster. In a sense, Marianne is basically the Edward Scissorhands of the romance and Byleth is the Kim Bogg of the relationship, or a simple beauty and the beast with Marianne being the Beast or Prince Adam and Byleth being the Belle. A lot of people, especially those on Twitter feel that this romance is problematic due to the fact that Byleth is 21 and Marianne is 17 and the fact that it’s a student and teacher relationship, but a 4 year age gap isn’t that problematic or huge.

      Eh, I won't really say that. Yes, their backstories and personalities are somewhat similar, but their roles in the story aren't. Deirdre is more similar to someone like Azura or Veyle in terms of her narrative purpose, while Marianne is just one of your many students rather than being someone super important. As such I dont think it's exactly fair to compare the two.
