I like to think that either Byleth just stopped using it after failing to save Jeralt, and/or they keep using it but much more cautiously--like how most stories where characters repeatedly time travel have at least one of them trying less to save individual people as time goes on (for them) because they've become numb to it. There's also the fact that it's not infinitely usable; it's a lame excuse but I chalk the moments where Byleth curiously didn't use it up to being out of Pulses. In the specific case of falling into the chasm at the end of White Clouds, it's possible that the "after death" rewinds occur automatically upon their death, the situation was not fatal so it didn't kick in, and they were too thrown off to have a chance to use it, if they weren't actually out of uses.

It's interesting that you mention warming up to Edelgard the more you learn about her, because for me it was the complete opposite. The more I learned about her, the more I realized just how much of a selfish, manipulative liar she was.

My very first thought when I saw Dimitri and heard him speak was "Oh, that's Captain America". Then I carried on playing, going the Black Eagles route (Crimson Flower) because Edelgard, Dorothea, Linhardt and revolution. That time when you fight Dimitri in the story I was like "Okay, yeah, I'm just fighting Steve, wish it didn't have to come to this". Then I started a Blue Lions playthrough, got to the timeskip and audibly went "Oh. Oh no."

I still never played his route.

CF was a hot mess in many ways, but it gave me Dimitri/Dedue at Tailtean Plains, and I'll always be grateful for that. .... But it should have been a CGI still image. WTF was with that black screen while they were talking?!

adding a late comment but I wanted to share my thoughts. to me, Dimitri and AM worked in a way that the other 3H lords and routes do not b/c AM forces the player to think in ways that the other paths did not. Blue Lions gives you a lovable hero/lord in part 1 and then breaks him and makes him a shell of his former self in part 2. and the player has to reconcile the Dimitri they loved in part 1 with who he has become now in part 2. simultaneously, the rest of the cast has to reconcile with Dimitri in the same way, giving the player a unique way to understand the characters in how we all react to the "post time skip" Dimitri. AM is not afraid to make the player say "WTF Dimitri, that was kinda rude/harsh/vicious/uncalled for." AM had the balls to make the player actually dislike Dimitri for some of his more questionable actions. and then, AM also has the balls to help Dimitri regain his sense of self again, complete with an arc where Dimitri acknowledges that his trauma is real and will never fully go away, yet he can learn to live with it and become a better friend and leader to all. compare with CF, which has Edelgard willingly ally with the main villains yet the route never truly forces the player to reconcile with Edelgard's heinous actions b/c she needs to stay as a likable waifu so fans will ship themselves with her. AM was never afraid to make Dimitri unlikable and yet he remained just as popular, likable, and husbando to many fans anyway b/c he was not treated with kid gloves like Edelgard was. compare with VW, where Claude claims that he's a cunning trickster schemer, yet Claude himself turns out to be the "purest" lord of the 3 b/c of his naive, idealistic, "I want a world without borders and divisions" mindset. Yuri in the DLC turns out to be the true cunning trickster schemer like we had all expected Claude to become. compare with SS, which had such interesting potential where your lord betrays you, yet they completely mishandled the route with a rather poor execution of ideas. this route could have been great if they had made Rhea playable as the replacement lord and focused the route on her arc instead, with Nemesis as the final boss to finish Rhea's arc.

Im a simple woman: I see an underrated content creator post a Fire Emblem video, I like and subscribe. Seriously tho. Im a huge Fire Emblem fan, and I was obsessed with 3 Houses when it first released. I was counting down the days for this game to drop, and I ended up going with Golden Deer. Fortunately I was able to recruit Dorothea and Ferdie from the Black Eagles, and I got to experience their AMAZING support conversations. Dorothea's got everything I like in a character. She's got style, attitude, and her views on nobility are interesting. Thanks for making this video. I just subscribed! ❤

Is she mean? Yes, absolutely, but it makes sense for her character given what she's been through so I'm fine with it. My main issue more so comes from her fans who try to portray her as the actually nice one who can do wrong instead of just liking her for who she is

A great video of an amazing character, she is my favorite since i played for the first time and seeing the growth of her mental state just makes my day 3000 times better, also seeing her fate during the other routes is devastating

7:26 I think crazy Rhea in CF makes a lot of sense just like how insane Dimitri works in AM. She just didn’t get as much screen time, of course. Her trauma has been festering for over 1000 years and she never fully dealt with it. When she thought she finally had her mother back, she was betrayed. Her completely losing her family, including Seteth/Flayn dying/leaving, makes her actions very much believable in CF. Also some of the best parts of the game for me are Cherami Leigh absolutely going off as Rhea

Honestly, IS should just remove Rewinds from the plot and make it just a mechanic, after all, we always could save and reload, and this never was integrated to the plot, this is Fire Emblem, not Undertale.

that Rodrigue death Scene annoys me to no end, Byleth first rewind as well. why these experienced and renowed warriors think that the best way to protect someone against an attack is to offer their backs to the blade? Rodrigue seriously couldn't subdue a small teenager girl, THE BEST KNIGHT IN FARGUS? Byleth, why did you think that giving your back to the axe was the best decision to save Edelgard?

I remain convinced CF should've been DLC. It would've given them more time to work on it and feel less rushed. It also would make sense as it is the most different and the only "hidden" route. The base game also does a terrible job of making Edelgard vs the church a real morally gray debate. Cindered Shadows tries to make up for this by adding a bunch more shady stuff about the church in the supplementary lore to make it seem worse, but it feels so forced at that point. If they had just let Edelgard be the antagonist in the base game, they wouldn't have had to write in half-hearted attempts to make her seem like a protagonist or make the church "bad" in White Clouds, which honestly are much less enjoyable than the stellar bittersweet cutscenes after the time skip and in the throne room on SS. The base game already had to juggle three routes and the contrasts between three nations. Adding another contrast between Edelgard and Rhea was just too much for them to handle well. Especially since Rhea isn't even playable on SS. Luckily, Three Hopes does Edelgard a lot better, and Scarlet Blaze is easily the best route in that game, compared to CF being IMO the worst in Three Houses.

Dimitri's portrayal in CF showcases the weak writing of the route. That line where Hubert implies that Dimitri doesn't fight 'fair' anymore is mostly used to balance our questionable actions as an invading army in CF. Unlike AM which portrays Edelgard at her best (we can see a nuance perspective of her arguments and reasoning for the war, we also get to see a more humane side of her through Dimitri's recollections) CF portrays a Dimitri destitute of everything that makes him a compelling character, he becomes a 'plot device' whose only purpose is to aid the flimsy narrative. Having said that, CF gave us some of the best Dimitri/Dedue interactions, so I guess I cannot be too offended.
