    Thanks for watching! Please leave a like to support. Also, here's some additional Information that I left out the video that might interest you:
    - Around 1:58, the last sentence in the Key Info section is a talking point I couldn't fit into the video. I wanted to touch up on that trait of "she never forgot where she came from." Dorothea is definitely like a celebrity, so I found that her response to her success was interesting. It augmented her character even more to see that instead of allowing the fame to go to her head, she still kept herself grounded in reality (both for her benefit and to her detriment for the reasons pointed out in the video). I wanted to use Lorenz's support to back this, as it was a good example of how she still held commoners in high esteem and was willing to challenge his noble mindset.
    - I was going to give direct evidence of the Japanese script saying Manuela found her, as the localization kept the identity of the person quite vague. Later on, Yuri's A Support made it more obvious, but before the DLC existed, each mention of her backstory just had her quite closed lipped about who it was. So, I read the Japanese script. Auto-translate shouldn't be trusted, but this is what it spat out from Ferdinand's A Support: "Fufu, after that Manuela-senpai discovered me and I became a diva."
    Since I don't trust the jankiness of the auto-translate, I'm thankful that the website I used provided the actual audio clips, so that I could HEAR "Manuela-senpai" for myself being vocalized. Here's where I read it from. Just make sure you change the language at the top right: houses.fedatamine.com/ja/supports/Ferdinand/Dorothea/A
    Thanks again for watching!

    Something that didn't get touched on that I latched onto was that Dorothea became the conscience of the story after the timeskip. She's often the one lamenting the terrible price of the war and how it impacts the common folks. There's a certain sadness to the character that's there throughout, but that she painted over in the Academy phase with her bubbly personality. In the War phase, this artifice has largely burned away, leaving a mature woman. It's also reflected on her models before and after the timeskip, which is why her redesign is one of my favorites.

    Dorothea truly amazed me is easily my favorite character from 3H ! Her self hatred can be extremely relatable due to being only seen as an object by others. One thing I’d like to mention is she’s amazing rep for bisexual people written in a genuine way which is touched more on in 3 Hopes. So happy you made this video, needed more people to talk about her! 💕

      @CainMagnus  Год назад +10

      That's a good comparison!

    • @rattyxoxo7397
      @rattyxoxo7397 Год назад +24

      I think a massive part of their differences is just the distinct differences between how 3H does it’s characterisation compared to Fates. In 3H most every character is treated seriously because otherwise fighting them in war-phase wouldn’t have the desired drama, and for those who chose Black Eagles you will see Dorothea in several cutscenes, so having an extremely extra character like those in fates would be grating. In fates, most characters only get their joining map to convince the player of their personality, and so they have to show off their gimmick far stronger in order to sell the player on said character. 3H also allows for supports between men and women to not have to end in romance, on top of having far more friendship supports, and so Dorothea is allowed to show off nuance and development by not marrying those she gets close to, while a massive majority of Charlotte’s supports do end with her marrying - even if some pairings are not for the status - and so do not get the chance to explore that nuance. Regardless, Charlotte does not aim to be the same serious character that Dorothea does because of how fates writes the majority of side characters, and therefore a comparison on which character plays into a more serious narrative would of course be weighted in Dorothea’s nature.
      I do though think it’s unfair to disregard Charlotte’s character as solely worse than Dorothea when there’s very key differences. While both do have to pretend and both seek to marry rich due to a impoverished upbringing, Charlotte is both more selfless in her goal as she states that it’s for her parents benefit, while Dorothea seeks primarily to secure herself (which isn’t something I condemn her for), and furthermore Charlotte has to alter her personality, where she loves brawling and is immensely strong, far more than Dorothea does, who already presents herself in a way that aligns with the male gaze, and thus this performance could be argued to be a far greater sacrifice for Charlotte than Dorothea. Both characters are immensely compelling if you do look for it, and both manage to be some of the best written characters of their own games (which yes Fates has good character writing in supports even if most are comedic, and that it’s the story that messes up those characters)
      This is definitely a tangent that’s too long for a 1 sentence comment, but I’m a big fan of both characters, and to see Dorothea be ranked as so clearly better when both are surprisingly different beneath a surface level description of their archetypes provoked this essay lmao

    This is a great analysis! I love how pretty much any 3H character has crazy depth to them, and that depth usually says something about the type of society they were raised in, thus strengthening the world building at the same time. 3H isn't perfect by any means, but you can tell the people making it really cared about their characters and I love it for that

    I'm glad someone is talking about how relatable and just...real the character of Dorothea is. She's been my top 2 character because of how much I understand her perspective and emotionality in so many of her objectives, and her constant feelings of inferiority and fear of the future stemming from a bad childhood even when being praised as an angel. It just makes a lot of sense, and it's the fact that I could know a Dorothea in real life that makes her writing good.
    My favorite character is Marianne for more personal reasons (depression and social anxiety), but I have grown to love Dorothea a lot over the years, plus she's proudly bi and honestly it's just nice to see it be shown as a normal aspect of a character.

    she isnt my favorite of the cast but she's still a well written character amongst many in FE3H. nicely done video! i get her distain towards nobles especially someone like ferdinand, and it isn't harmful to any means because she still sees hope in most characters. hell if you recruit her, her post timeskip convo's can be sad but shes one of the few characters who show tons of emotions during a war which is great.

Im a huge Fire Emblem fan, and I was obsessed with 3 Houses when it first released. I was counting down the days for this game to drop, and I ended up going with Golden Deer. Fortunately I was able to recruit Dorothea and Ferdie from the Black Eagles, and I got to experience their AMAZING support conversations. Dorothea's got everything I like in a character. She's got style, attitude, and her views on nobility are interesting. Thanks for making this video. I just subscribed! ❤

    I thought Dorothea was pretty at first, hell I found her the most attractive of all the characters in the game, being part of the reason I chose Black Eagles first. I know, shallow.
    But as I bonded with every character in my house, I found my self relating to her, not in struggles, but in interests.
    I kinda stumbled into her A support by accident. I didn’t know the game had a marriage system at first, but once I did, I knew she was the one. I didn’t even think twice when it gave me the option. I relate to Dorothea in interests & struggles.
    I’m starting to realize she might just be a female version of me.

    See, what I find interesting is that you and my friend had a VERY similar initial reaction to her. His wasn't quite as intense, but nonetheless he didn't like her initially nearly as much as I did. Meanwhile me, a trans woman, immediately loved her character, and how she annihilated people with a Levin Sword and Thoron. She's easily my second favorite character in the game, second only to Edelgard. Who's FANTASTIC and gets way more hate than she deserves. Something I'm surprised wasn't touched on was how much sense it makes for Dorothea to side with Edelgard; she wants a world where she can be valued for who she is, and Edelgard's goal is to make a world where Crests and nobility don't matter. The two are a perfect fit. But I am glad to hear my girl being done justice.

  • @nathanbyberg

    Dorothea is my favorite girl in Fire Emblem Three Houses. She kinda reminds me of Charlotte from Fates, but instead of killing men with a big axe, she kills them with her magic and her charms. Also, her “assets” are amazing, if you know what I’m talking about! My favorite battle line she says in a Part 2 battle is, “Only thorns left on this rose.” Shows you how tough she is.

    Okay as for an actually productive comment, that Yuri support is pure gold. Considering Yuri himself is also a rather prickly character who you gotta dig in a little bit to find the real good stuff, that support does them both many favors. Knowing that she got burnt out on singing really does soften the whole blow of "why did you throw away your promising career to get into the academy?" thing, alongside all the hangups that youve put up into perspective here.
    When laid out like this, her aggression that comes up in many supports seems much more justified as opposed to the first impression a lot of people on the internet get. It doesnt help that a lot of the most reductive takes (such as man-hater, among other things) gets spread around far too much, which does her story a disservice.
    I think the biggest culprit to her getting a bad rep though is the Academy phase as a whole, with how most Academy supports beat you over the head with that very shallow surface trait, and you really dont get the much needed follow-up for it until youre through with more than half the game. It also doesnt help that Crimson Flower is only 6 chapters long, so you have even less time to really dig into the good stuff if you go down that road. And like you said, Silver Snow is ass, so that doesnt help either.
    But yeah, so many characters get hurt by their shallow Academy phase showings and it makes me sad. Dorothea, Lysithea (a character ive come around to myself), hell even Bernie and Marianne to a degree just leave you hanging for a long time, and in Dorothea and Lysithea's cases, what you're left hanging with is an angry abraisive mess.
    Speaking of messes, this comment is structured horrendously. Maybe Ill edit it later to be more readable, but in case I dont, I hope what I just typed came out legible lmao. Great video bro, and I can't wait for the Dimitri vid. :}

      Yeah, that's why I mentally tuned out and didn't bother to invest in reading her thoroughly before. Despite my shifted opinion of her, some of academy Dorothea's dialogue still peeves me a bit to this day, even after understanding where she's coming from.
      But I do believe that's mostly the fault of how 3H handled its silly support system. Having most of the juice of these supports locked behind Ch.13 is bad timing, considering you'll be more interested in the war arc's story than worrying about supports of characters you already don't like too much. As ehh as Engage's story and characters are, at least I can immediately read this type of stuff without interruption there. The delays in 3H only allow those negative feelings (toward the characters you're iffy about) to fester until you're no longer interested.
      And certain supports do suffer for the gap too. I'm still flabbergasted to this day at the idea of Mercie and Annie not talking to each other for 5 whole years over a petty misunderstanding, making both of them look silly and grossly out of character. I should read the Japanese script for that one too just to see if it's truly that dumb, lmfao

    My gripe with Dorothea is not necessarily that she wants a wealthy spouse. My problem is that her methods are counter-intuitive to her goals. She wants someone who cares for her beyond her beauty and shallow reasons, but she uses her beauty rather than her genuinely interesting personality to do her dating.

    • @CainMagnus
      @CainMagnus  Год назад +13

      It's difficult for someone who self-loathes the way she does to see the value of their own personality. So, they compensate by focusing on the external. She couldn't know how to use her personality to her advantage when she had too low of an opinion of herself. Linhardt's supports especially highlight this. Her using the wrong methods was intentional in order to show how little she thinks of herself.

    I don't know why people can say that she is boring even at the first glance of her.
    What she's doing, getting an opera role using her looks and voice to entice a good man so he can take care of her for a life time is a smart move.
    Now, artist got a abundant amount of money just by singing but back then when the economy is still as slow, a good salary for a few years probably is the best that she can get.
    And she didn't even just want her man money, she actually filtering so she can have the best so she can be happy for her lifetime and hopefully making her husband the same.

      Probably because they wanted to emphasize her hatred for the nobility while simultaneously seeking them out because of her goals, given that it's the crux of her issues with her past, and where her character development lies.
      Even though it is DLC, Yuri's still worth acknowledging. Despite Yuri being adopted, he's of a common background as well, given his mother was a prostitute and his biological father is unknown. And they both share disdain for nobility with their similar life experience.

  • @samflood5631

    I feel like a lot of people assume she’s either a slut like Charlotte from Fates and Isabella from Dragon Age 2, or she not as waifu material like Hilda, Rhea or Edelgard. There were some who don’t understand that Dorothea grew up poor like Basim from Assassins Creed, Kenny from South Park, Denji from Chainsaw Man and Eric from Power Rangers Time Force as she was begging on the streets of Enbarr and had to pull her life out of the gutter to become an opera songstress. They were even turned off by her support conversation with Lorenz and think that Dorothea is bad for judging the noble folk. Do they just hate poor people or something?
    Dorothea is just as misunderstood as Cordelia from Awakening. A lot of fans think that her Chrom Obsession is her only character trait. There’s a lot more to Cordelia’s character like the fact that she’s smart, beautiful and a perfectionist. But she also have a lot of insecurities like her being regarded as the smartest knight in awakening and her small breast (to be fair, she does have a slender body). She also suffer from survivors guilt when her fellow knights were slaughter by plegion soldiers. And even when she does pin for Chrom, she was able to move on in a healthy and mature way with the man she has a support conversation with (Robin, Lon’qu, Duke Virion and Stahl for example).
