Reneissance started in Italy (and it was mostly thanks to people rediscovering Ancient Greek and Roman art/literature) and my professor at school (and many other scholars say the same thing) told me that many of the texts and art was brought back to Europe by fleeing Christians from the fall of Costantinople. Before they had almost all the ancient Roman art and texts since the emperor was in Costantinople not in Rome after the fall of the west.

    • @musa4k236
      @musa4k236 8 месяцев назад +10

      @@marcobelli6856 he simplified it but its not true. Yes the Fall of Constantinople was a part of chain of events that started the renaissance but not because of that. The europeans were fricked up because they had no connections to the silk road after the ottomans conquered anatolia and constantinople. The russian route to the silk road was too dangerous (harsh weather, pillaging nomads, politics, bad infrastructure) and the european economy was decreasing because they could not profit from the silk road anymore in a cheap way...so the age of exploration started for the europeans. 2nd cause was that the Peasants and citizens of europe were fed up with the backward ideology of the european church/vatican and the feudal system. So they demanded equal rights and the ideology of humanism started (and also a lot of peasant uprisings). The ancient greek and roman Texts were not brought to western europe by "fleeing" christians. Why would an orthodox christian flee to catholic western europe who demolished, raped and plundered their city 200 years ago. If they fled, the farthest they went was the balkans. Normal cultural exchange, travelers and the change of the backward thinking of the church was the cause that these ancient greek and roman texts were used again. Muslims did not reject the old written knowledge of the antique, hence they had their golden age while europe had their dark age. Muslims did not just used the science and philosophy found in these texts, they even used this knowledge to go further and improve science and invent new things. All of these texts were in europe all the time(as seen as an example of the tv series vikings) i mean the vatican is in the capital of the antique Roman empire...

      From what little I know on the subject, other historian RUclipsrs can do it justice, the best attempt was under Catherine the Great. The British Empire and the French were busy fighting each other during the American Revolution, 1774-1789. The attempt failed and the more populous ideas of nationalism and religion were adopted during the chaotic French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. The idea of reviving old imperial dynasties died in the Year of Revolutions in 1848, with populism/nationalist fervor taking root across Europe.
      When Catherine the Great schemed and planned with the Austrian Empire to revive Byzantium. The Balkans, Asia Minor, the Levant, and Egypt were under Ottoman Imperial rule for about 200 years.
      In addition, the Ottoman Empire was no pushover, as they had the largest standing army in Europe. The Russian Imperial was successful on both land and sea, eventually annexing the Crimea Tartars, annexing Moldova, and liberating Romania. The Austrians were unsuccessful in the Balkans and fared worse in their battles against the Ottomans.

      Guys when it’s about history better to judge according to real facts and not with emotions ( prophesies, religion etc). And the fact is that at 29th May 1453, the greatest city of late antiquity and the medieval times, the capital of one of the greatest civilization who ever existed, fell. Constantinople was the savior of western world for more than a millennium ( stoping the scourge of Islam, East nations, Asian nomads and many more). It was a symbol of Christianity and Roman/Greek/European culture. Western Cristian nations had enough time to develop economically, culturally and militarily and being able to stand by themselves by 15th century because of what the Byzantine Empire had done all the previous centuries (including of keeping alive a lot of the knowledge of the ancient world - that’s why the renaissance started in Italy after the fall by Greek and Italian people who had escape the atrocities of the Ottomans). Please read history from worldwide sources and not from based school books etc

Mehmed's victory wasn't a great achievement, since taking a weakened, starving, ruined city with only a few thousand defenders isn't hard, especially when you have enourmous cannons and ten or more times the numbers. Saying this was a great victory would be like saying that a hundred thousand men versus ten thousand is a fair fight.

      I’d even make the same argument about Native Americans that used to live in US. It would be stupid to suggest that they should kick out all the colonizers and make their own country because there are almost no people left to liberate and their culture is not in an imminent danger savere enough to require active resistance.

    Strongly recommend everyone to listen to the Hostory of Byzantium podcast, you'll be so invested in the empire that it's hard not to cry while watching this scene in the Ottoman Netflix series.
