    Assembling a DIY filter for my duck pond in a 5 gallon bucket. Two layers of filter pad and 10 lbs of lava rock, simple media to keep it easy to clean out. Unfiltered we have to change out the pond water every 2 days or it gets too dirty, hoping to get 3-5 days between water changes with this. May need upgrade to finer media but we'll give this a test.

    Pump update. The pump runs well, moves plenty of water. It is fairly loud but for me I don't mind. The issue is I do not believe this is rated for continuous duty. The brushes wore out in just a few weeks of operation. It came with a spare set which I changed yesterday but I may need to put this system on a timer to just run during the day or something to reduce the duty cycle. I'm going to start looking for a pump more suited for continuous duty.
    Be sure to check out parts 2 and 3.

      please update if you find a better pump!! I am searching around trying to find something because mine was not suited for ducks and broke after a couple days of usage >:(

      Hi thanks for the comment. I found a surplus pump from a business throwing it out but is is quite an expensive pump. Unfortunately continuous duty pumps are quite a bit more than transfer pumps. Been meaning to do another update video. Thanks for the prompt! I'll put that video on the to-do list.

    Yes filter from the bottom is better check out other like one I saw using a tetra pond filter into a 50 gal bucket and like shayne did a swirl pvc going down to bottom and forcing water back up through lava rock and bio balls and spo ge and filter media wow check it out

    I just watched this entire video to see how effective the pump was , and you dumped it?

      Part 2 has more info, upgrades, and testing. Watch that one yet? Water still gets discolored but the filter does a great job pulling the solids out.

    Good idea but you need a prefilter

  • @lesleyforsythe5389

    Oh yeah and transfer pump don't work well pond pump with pre-filter sponge and cartridge pool filter will work don't use sand filter waste of time and only filters out 20 particulates whereas art ridge does 10

    This is already a year ago so maybe redundant but what if you connected your hose to your drain and then opened it and ran the hose at the same time? The running hose would act like a pump with that T connection. You could drain a portion of that tub every day and the suction of the hose at the T connection would take out the crud at the bottom of the tub? See what I mean?
    Then you would only have to refill a portion of the tub as opposed to the entire thing and it would stay relatively clean.

    • @shanesdiy
      @shanesdiy  2 года назад

      I am intrigued by the concept but not sure what you mean. You mention connecting the hose to the drain, do you mean the water supply hose? Then you say to run the hose at the same time. Still referring to the water supply hose?
      Do you mean to run supply water straight through the PVC Tee assembly with both valves open and the tee creating a venturi effect to draw the crud off the bottom of the tank? If so, I'm sure water will drain from the tank like that but not sure it would get much of the solids off the bottom of the tank. The drain is an inch or two up from the bottom of the tank so I don't think it would be very effective with settled solids. Plus, just running fresh water straight through the tee would waste a lot of water. I probably am not understanding you correctly.
      I'm interested if you care to elaborate further. Anything to simplify pond maintenance is welcome! Haven't been using the pump/filter for some time, the pump I selected was a transfer pump with brushes and it burns through brushes in a few weeks if ran continuous duty.

      @@shanesdiy "Do you mean to run supply water straight through the PVC Tee assembly with both valves open and the tee creating a venturi effect to draw the crud off the bottom of the tank? " YES Exactly.
      I'm looking to build my own pond. so I'm tossing ideas around.
      Actually, I was thinking that if the cleaning was done ever morning the sludge on the bottom wouldn't be as thick. Also if the bottom was sloped towards the drain, then when the pond was drained, it would make cleaning the bottom much easier because all the sludge would roll downhill to the drain. Of course the drain would have to be large enough not to clog.
      "... but not sure it would get much of the solids off the bottom of the tank." Try it?? See how powerful the suction gets? How about a 90* pointing towards the bottom with a small length of pipe attached that is truncated so that the opening of the pipe is much bigger?
      "....Plus, just running fresh water straight through the tee would waste a lot of water." Yeah that seems likely. But what about if you only did that for a few mins to clean up a portion of the bottom. Not empty the entire pond? You'd have to try it? See how it works?
      I think the duck pond can be fully automated with a combination of flushing and filtering. That's what I'm looking into.
      I'm thinking of collecting rain water in a large vat and using that to refill the pond instead of always using tapwater. Basically like flushing a toilet so to speak.

    • @shanesdiy
      @shanesdiy  2 года назад

      You'll have to let me know what you build, full automation would be very cool. I've thought about the rainwater but here in the Phoenix area we don't get much consistently.
      You've got my gears turning, might have to revisit the pond setup soon!

    Shayne I'm in the same boat I do pools fish tanks and now my ducks I saw a video of a the same thing only an outside 50gal barrel on the outside and it works currently I ha e two baby drakes super spoiled a 40gal stock and a kiddie pool pond pump with a tight mesh bag over it and pumping back into the tank with a aquarium hose and a spray bar they totally love it but it clogs to quickly so I found a new index sand pump in my shed totally crap I'm gonna use a 1hp pool filter and a 100 square foot cartridge filter cartridge the trans8fer pumps is way too noiseyand they don't last

    • @shanesdiy
      @shanesdiy  9 месяцев назад

      Ya, the transfer pump didn't work out. I have been investigating some other options to test. Also been checking into cartridge filters. Another issue with this 5 gal filter was it is a pain to clean.

  • @janice8695
    @janice8695 Год назад

    Is there a reason that the water starts getting filtered from the bottom and clean water leaves the bucket from the top? As opposed to the opposite?

    • @shanesdiy
      @shanesdiy  Год назад +3

      If you feed the water in the top and let gravity run it through the media eventually it will overflow the bucket when the media starts getting plugged. There is no pressure to push it through and unless you make a water tight tank lid it will blow out and overflow. Also, it is more likely that the water will not evenly flow through the media so it will not efficiently use all the media. You will get spots that will collect more "crud".
      Bottom up flow the filter tank always stays full of water, the dirty water gets has pressure pushing it through the media and the tank will never overflow. Much more even distribution of the water through the media. The high level in the top of the tank will be the highest when the filter media is cleanest and will drop as media gets plugged making it easy to know when it needs to be cleaned out. This makes it easy to adjust the supply valve to limit max flow/level in the filter tank.
      Thank you for watching and for your comment. Keep an eye out for another update video on this series. I'm planning to get a better pump that is designed for continuous duty and upgrade it. The pump I used wasn't designed for continuous duty and it only lasted a few weeks before the brushes had to be replaced so I haven't been using the filter for some time.

    Wouldn't a translucent bucket be better that way sunlight can get in and algae can grow?

    • @shanesdiy
      @shanesdiy  Год назад

      Perhaps for a bigger pond where you could establish an "ecosystem". I wouldn't want algae growing in this. It has to be cleaned out every few days. Not much time for growing algae. Might be interesting to be able to see how dirty it is... not sure I've ever seen a clear 5 gallon bucket at the local stores.

    • @shanesdiy
      @shanesdiy  2 года назад +1

      Heat wasn't an issue but the type of pump was. It is a transfer pump and the brushes only last a couple weeks of continuous run time. Best to find a different pump than I used.
