I have a friend who never used her special dishes and silver until her mother in law came to visit. She looked at the China closet, then at the table which was set with random dishes. She looked at my friend, pointed to the China cabinet and asked, "are you saving these for Warren's next wife?"
She actually wrote the story up for publication and started her writing career. She also used all the China, crystal, silver, etc for every meal, including breakfast thereafter.
So USE your finest for your family. They are the most important people you will ever know!

No children and no relatives visit. I have concrete floors. I use my good stuff once or twice a year. This year I ate Swanson's Turkey and Stuffing (9 ounces). Have you ever noticed that none of the single serve meals go over 12 ounces? The USDA knowns how big our stomachs are and they know we only need 32 ounces of food a day. They measure food for the US. Grocery stores measure food for every family to be fair. We can measure our food for each meal so we will have food at the end of the month and food will last longer. Not just for Weight Watchers (not called portion watchers, have you noticed?). My cousin was the botanist David G. Fairchild, who started the National Geographic with his brother-in-law. They married daughters of Alexander Graham Bell.

It's funny, we laugh at how everyone had the avocado and harvest gold in the 60s and 70s, which have come to symbolize middle-of-the-road pedestrian style, and then we think it's so cool today to have the same grey and white scheme that everyone else has!

Wow, what a lucky find on the historical photo of the house! I now feel vindicated on my four sets of antique dishes.

    • @danielallen138
      @danielallen138 2 года назад +2

Years ago, at an antique show, we found an old aerial photograph of the neighborhood we lived in at the time. The photo was taken to document the construction of a nearby shopping center. Our home was actually one of the last ones built in that neighborhood, so it was a vacant lot in the photo. But interesting to see the old Dutch colonial next door, with its original details that had been removed by the time we moved there. Fun to observe all of the changes from when that photo had been taken!

Something I never see mentioned, but have always loved, is how some people use a simple lamp in their kitchens. With all the other types of wonderful task lighting in kitchens, which can be harsh, a lamp brings in a soft glow. I'm sure John's is there for practical reasons too, but I just love the softness of that type of lighting. It gives the area a bit of a English country estate or English pub feel. Not candlelight, but not overwhelming bright overhead light either. Reminds me of watching Downton Abbey and some of the scenes showing how resistant some of the people were to upgrading to electric light which some considered too harsh. I'm sure it helps make their dinner seating much more cozy for the 2 of them. I don't recommend it, but I have a lamp right on my dinning table at the moment; still waiting for the overhead fixture to be installed. But a lamp on a kitchen countertop if you have the space is very nice. Thanks so much for the tour Linda, and thank you to John too for sharing his very inspiring and eclectic home. He has achieved a timelessness that is so enviable!! I enjoyed this tour thoroughly and will be watching it again and again to pick out ideas from it. I've always been a fan of home tours. I'm a china and book collector too and I am so envious of all John's shelving!! Oh, and I saw Stewart! Glad to see him too, thank you for not editing him out.

Who can resist China, dishes! Not me❤️I totally understand this collection and recognize most. Just as with the home tours on “Quintessence”, designers, decorators minds all work alike😂they see beauty, collect what they can and bring it home with them. I’m not a decorator, but I collect and will let my family downsize for we when I’m gone. I will not become a hoarder but I like my “stuff”! PS: That is a lot of books and my husband is not quite there with the CD🤪

What a sweet man for allowing us all in , thank you💙 These garden and home videos are so inspiring , I do hope we are invited to more, it really helps balance me out 😆 cause often I get "all about the gardens" and my house just gets set aside and begins lacking in detail and also the other way "all about the house" and then the gardens start to show signs of neglect . This was such a treat , thank you all for this. (Side note but more importantly , Linda, how is your husband's healing process going? I have been praying for you all🙏. Remarkable that you find the time and energy to do all you do even while caring for him 💙 bless you)

loved the tour and presentations. I live in a older home in NC and have many of my grandmother and great grandmothers antiques Especially my great-grandmother's baby grand player piano. We are very blessed to own and enjoy older things from the past. Thank you Linda.

What a treat to step inside this incredible home. Thank you so very much for taking us on this journey with you. Such an interesting man. I could listen to you both all day long.
On another note it was nice to put a face to Stewart. I'm surprised he didn't edit out his reflection lol.

So often, I feel twinges of guilt that I’m not able to conform to the Minimalist movement that seems to be making it’s way through social norms. I’ve tried in vain to thin out and size down, many times. After viewing this two part episode, a huge weight was lifted, and I realized, It’s okay to have things I enjoy, no matter the amount, displayed throughout my home. Thank you, John, for allowing us to come into your private space and sharing the things you enjoy. Thank you also to Linda and Stuart. ❤️❤️❤️

Absolutely beautiful! I loved seeing John's home and gardens, such a treat. I am a lover of dishes of all kinds. I have always said if I had the money, I would build a home with a "dish room"! Please thank him for sharing it with your viewers!

Thanks to John for sharing his home. I got so many great ideas for my bathroom which I’m redoing. I live in a house built in the 60’s and had two redos before we bought . This walk through was so inspiring. 👏👏👏

    Like all the china display.
My grandparents met in a china manufactory.
    They worked there.
    Have also plenty of treasures.
But I m too afraid to use it.
I only use the tiny vases frequently for sweetpeas or other seasonal little flowers.
    Kind regards,
    Marcus

I did not want this to end. interesting how the blue/white china did not really continue in the extension of the house but there was all that lovely riot of 'Santa Fe" colour. Loved the sepia coloured photo in the laundry and thank you for the historical insight. Just a wonderful tour and "a good steward of a historical home with the responsibility." I like what you said at the end Linda of what kind of stories were knocking on the door and there will never be anymore 100 year old homes. Hi Stewart. Love from sunny Sydney, Australia.

I suspect most of today's McMansions are not going to age as well as these homes from the first half of the 20th century!

John seems to be a very gracious and humble man. What a beautiful home! I can't wait until he visits your beautiful home. If he decorates for Christmas, I would really enjoy another tour. :)
I have downsized now but once considered buying an older historic home. Unfortunately where I live, the most beautiful and charming historic homes are surrounded by one of most dangerous parts of my city. Such a shame....
