The timekeeper wasn't off... It's played in a particular Raga which doesn't always have an even pulse... Carnatic music is different than Western music.
Crap, meant to hit reply and accidentally hit remove. To the person who wanted to know if there was more of this online, click my name - I have three more clips from this DVD. The DVD is called Paris, and can be ordered online from Bardo Records.
Actually, the timekeeper does get a bit off every now and then, but for the most part he is on. He's still doing an amazing job, however. Oh, and you mean "tala," not "raga."
+Da Atheist I can appreciate the perception of interference that a normal listener of carnatic rythms may infer from the claps. But as a percussionist those "claps" guides us and is THE best support we can have to make sure what we play conforms to the set beats and counts. So it is relative!
I can never get enough of Selvaganesh's kanjira playing. His right hand technique is beyond amazing. Hard to put words to his level of discipline.
This dude is a monster. Amazing what he can get out of such an unassuming little drum.
Freaks me out to hear so many different tones and textures from ONE DRUM...brilliant.
Its all in the genes. Dad's magic in ghatam has transmogrified into kanjira virtuosity in the hands selva ganesh. What a soul stirring display ?
How can an instrument with 3 basic sounds keep my interest for 9 minutes! Best example of kanjira virtuosity on RUclips.

Considering how good his wrist action is, I'm guessing no.
The time keeper could have done a little better, he went off time a couple of instances.

If it's a solo why are there two people making music.
