American Mary is intense. Over time I've come to appreciate it more and more. Also, random trivia about that movie: The Soska Sisters met Katherine Isabell on the set of Josie and the Pussycats, circa 2001, and that encounter inspired the Soska sisters to write American Mary with Isabelle in mind from the start.
Totally with you on Stopmotion. I got pretty hyped for it when I heard the concept, but I was a bit disappointed. The stop-motion effects were all really well done, but the rest of the film was incredibly been there done that.
Always love these monthly recaps! With what you briefly said about Butt Boy, I did not expect it to be about that. But I can understand why you felt the way you did after watching it. Other than that, there's actually quite a lot of movies you watched that I have not heard of at all. So I think I have some movies to add to my watchlist. Appreciate it so much! Thanks! Also I love the fit and makeup you have in this!!
I'm planning on watching Stopmotion pretty soon. I didn't watch it last night because I watched Bob Clark's Deathdream (aka Dead of Night) instead. I've wanted to watch Deathdream for years. I think it was worth the wait. Definitely a feel bad horror movie so proceed with caution. And Robert Morgan has a stopmotion short on youtube (he was a whole channel!) called The Cat with Hands. I didn't like it that much the first time I watched it but loved it on a second viewing. The first time you watch it you're just getting used to the freaky world. The second time you can pay attention to the actual story. Robert Morgan just throws you into the deep end of his work from what I can gather.
Oh it's fabulous. It has vampires, werewolves, witches and Your Dad, but with prestige TV production value and all the actors play it like a serious drama.
Oh, I Saw The Devil... A great film, but definitely not one you hurry to rewatch. South Korean cinema produces many films like that honestly; like Park Chan Wook's Vengeance trilogy.
The shivers I got after you said you’re starting a Park Chan Wook watchlist. You should check out his revenge trilogy (Oldboy is the second film), and The Handmaiden!
My sister had an ex show her Oldboy, and so she asked me for a recommendation of a similarly dark and messed up movie to show him... so I told her I Saw the Devil. She texted me afterwards and asked what was wrong with me because it absolutely traumatized them both, so now I'm not allowed to recommend movies to her. I definitely hope you enjoy Oldboy, as it's a much twistier and thematically-richer film. There's also a movie called Lumberjack the Monster that just hit Netflix, directed by Takashi Miike. It's shorter and less intense than I Saw the Devil, and the plot just goes in bonkers directions. The "protagonist" is definitely Patrick Bateman-influenced.
Awesome recap!! Glad to see you’re still trying to meet your yearly daily quota of movies! Good on you for venturing more into international cinema! Also love your outfit and makeup lol So jealous you got to watch elm street on VHS!!! I used to have a tv and dvd player combo until it crapped out on me! Ugh I miss it.. I’m so glad you were into the stuff!! I truly believe it’s the most 80s movie of all time!! That’s so funny you mention falling asleep during movies. My mom is like that! She falls asleep during a movie EVERYTIME without fail! I used to get mad at her but now I’m guilty of it too! Hahaha I’m just glad this recap is finally here cuz I’ve been dying to tell you that I finally saw Roman holiday for the first time last month! I checked out on Blu-ray from the library and it’s packed with awesome bonus features! I totally see why it’s one of your all time faves! Funny that even the Antichrist can be hopeless romantic!! I’m not ashamed to admit I shed a tear or 2 watching it, I fell in love with this movie honestly lol my favorite moment is the mouth of truth scene! Apparently Gregory Peck improvised the loving his hand moment and Audrey Hepburna reaction is unscripted and real!! So iconic! Thank you again dark mistress for this recap! Now hopeful we can have smooth streams again! Haha I’m glad that you’re back home safe and can’t wait to see the rest of your travel vlogs from your visit!
I haven't seen "Monster," but an Indonesian horror movie I did enjoy was "The Queen of Black Magic." It was on Shudder. I'm not sure if it still is. It's older, 80's I think, don't quote me. It is definitely a wild ride though.
American Mary was good, but could've been great. Katharine Isabelle was excellent, she played the role beautifully. Katharine Isabelle is always a win 🏆
I recommend you check out Bound (1996). It has gina gershon and your girl jennifer tilly. It's from the people who did the matrix series. Also it was inspiration for love lies bleeding.
Happy Pride Month! I watched the first three Omen films, and I liked all three of them. I also watched Prey and I loved it. Planning on rewatching Freddy’s Revenge, it probably has my favorite Freddy quote. “You are all my children now.”
Nice recap.. I always forget 30 Minutes or Less exists lol.. I don't remember too much and don't remember thinking it was great, but also remember thinking it was fun in a dumb way.. Lady Bird is a film I loved when it came out, but liked a little less the second time, but it's still good.. I used to be obsessed with Superbad but now it just annoys me lol, but it's still classic.. For a second I was pumped that you watched Patty Jenkins's Monster, but realized it was from 2023, and not even the popular and critically acclaimed Japanese film called Monster from 2023 (which I haven't seen), didn't know there were 2 Monsters from 2023.. probably don't need anymore movies called Monster for awhile lol.. Random, but I recently watched The Iron Claw and have become one of those annoying people who feels obligated to tell anyone with a pulse how amazing it is lol.. but seriously it's incredible and you don't have to care about wrestling to enjoy it.. don't know how it wasn't nominated for any awards.. and Zac Efron definitely deserved an Oscar nom, he was soo good! Another random, but I watched a Kristen Stewart horror/mystery last night called Personal Shopper.. didn't personally love it, but I understand why people like it.. not sure if you've seen it but you may like it..
Can we discuss the make up look here? They eye color is beautiful! Your friend did a great job! When you watched Nightmare on Elm St were the credits scewed? On my VHS, the names in the credits are cut off on the sides. I still have all of my VHS movies. I no longer have a VHS player as my current one has eaten my Halloween H20 and I'm super sad about it.
VHS on a small screen hits different! Back when The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was still banned in the UK, I came across a copy whilst helping to renovate an old video rental store. You can probably imagine some of the other 'under-the-counter' X-rated content I found. I think the OG I Spit on Your Grave was another. I watched TTCM on a small portable TV in my friend's clubhouse he had in his family garden. The picture was busted but still watchable, and the sound was also pretty crappy, to the point where I was certain the movie didn't contain any background music until rewatching it several years later after it was unbanned. I have to say, the experience of watching it on that small screen and such a degraded copy made the experience all the more scary and icky feeling. HD/digital media has pretty much ruined that vibe.
My May recap are two non-horrors; Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (with Max in one scene) on IMAX. I stream rewatched The Crow (1994) 4K on it’s 30th anniversary and The Scout’s Guide to a Zombie Apocalypse on Amazon Prime. I may stream Deathgasm next. The first foreign film I grew up watching in school was The Red Balloon (available on Criterion) with no dialogue until MTV was born, German pop rock band Nena’s 99 Luft Balloons was my recap of that magic Red Balloon film from a music video on nuclear proliferation. I usually rewatch La Femme Nikita directed by Luc Besson on blu ray years after seeing it the first time in a theater before on cable. Love The Stuff with Mira Sorvino’s dad, Paul Sorvino in it battling Stuffies. You’ll find Mira in Mimic battling genetic engineered cockroaches her character created with real ones crawling around.
When you talked about movies that make a sudden genre turn I immediately thought of Love Lies Bleeding only for you to bring it up as of a movie that does the opposite. lol
Butt Boy 😳 have not seen it but at least you got through a few minutes. Oh, I’m not going to say it. 😜 I’ll go on. 🧐 Oh watching VHS tape on a small TV tube. I remember those days. 🤔 Yes watching a movie from that time in the way you had to watch it at home is nostalgic for me. (Super Mario 2 anyone?? lol) i hear ya on vhs was sometimes the better viewing experience. one word: friday the 13th. the vhs was so blurry and dark and muted colors that it made it more home video-like/blair witchy and scarier. it came out remastered on TNT channel back in the day and the night scenes were so clear and you could make out everything that it killed the whole atmosphere. dvd and blu ray continued to ruin it even more. wtf is letterboxed? is it reddit for movies or something? dont buy netflix, every movie is free online somewhere. if you want the best for international ghost movies, forget the ring, watch ju-rei the uncanny. holy sht! (the plot is very basic and kinda sucks but the atmosphere and scares more than make up for it.) its been awhile but i remember loving american mary. i forget what happens near the end but yea, the ending act was kinda off and brought down the rest of the movie.
I love how hard you called out Reagan, because it's very much deserved. If you'd ever like to know the insane history of how he went from censorship-battling Hollywood actor to opressive, egomaniacal president, go ahead and DM me 😂 The highlight of his rise, for me, involves the fact that he starred in an edgy and obviously Oscar-bait movie called King's Row, only to have the score praised above his performance. That score was a very prominent inspiration for John Williams when he sat down to write the score for Star Wars. Ronald Reagan insisted that the theme from King's Row be played at his inauguration. Putting those facts together... I kid you not, Reagan was basically inaugurated to the Imperial March. Yeah.
i watched stopmotion yesterday night this movie was boring, monotome, no back story with depth ... it was really really bad i hated it. It's sad since i was really excited for it but verry dissapointing, They wasted the whole potential of this movie and you could notice from the first 30 min what this movie was about and how it would end. just like the strangerss chapter one. Like The strangers used to be one of my most favourite horror movies ever.. but damn that last one was plain boring so boring litteraly nothing happens in this movie.
Listen youngster I'm 33 (unfathomably ancient) and I fall asleep thru GOOD movies so back off my shortcomings 😂 ok maybe I was just st*ned af but still IT COMES FOR US ALL

Freddy’s revenge is really good at capturing the tone of the original film, and has my favorite Freddy design

30 minutes or less seems in poor taste since that’s a thing that actually happened
I love how hard you called out Reagan, because it's very much deserved. If you'd ever like to know the insane history of how he went from censorship-battling Hollywood actor to opressive, egomaniacal president, go ahead and DM me 😂
The highlight of his rise, for me, involves the fact that he starred in an edgy and obviously Oscar-bait movie called King's Row, only to have the score praised above his performance. That score was a very prominent inspiration for John Williams when he sat down to write the score for Star Wars.
Ronald Reagan insisted that the theme from King's Row be played at his inauguration. Putting those facts together...
I kid you not, Reagan was basically inaugurated to the Imperial March. Yeah.
you are stunning 🔥🔥👌👌😍
i watched stopmotion yesterday night this movie was boring, monotome, no back story with depth ... it was really really bad i hated it.
Listen youngster I'm 33 (unfathomably ancient) and I fall asleep thru GOOD movies so back off my shortcomings 😂 ok maybe I was just st*ned af but still IT COMES FOR US ALL
I didn’t think it would be me 😭😭😭
