That last "I love you," always gets to me because Xander wasn't absolving Willow with those three little words, but forgiving her. That is one of the greatest acts of human love.
Yes, but also with the help of Giles when Willow absorbed his borrowed powers from a coven of witches in England. Which it managed to tap into any humanity she had left in her!
The way Willows voice was cracking as Xander was telling her “I love you” She really didn’t want to feel at all, trying to hold her grief in with anger and revenge.

Truly a beautiful scene, very touching. It makes me shiver to watch Willow's hair turn back to normal as she is crying in the arms of Xander - very powerful.
I believe Giles had stated that Xander used to be the heart of the Scoobies, though through a lot of his actions causing so much division between the Scoobies, really Tara became the Scoobies heart.
The show itself calls Xander the heart of the scoobies, so it's hardly a revelation. In the S4 episode where Buffy defeats Adam, she is aided by Willow, Giles and Xander invoking a mystical spell to empower buffy with each of them symbolizing a different aspect. Giles was the mind, Willow was the spirit, Xander the heart and Buffy the vessel/hand. So yes, Xander was the heart of the Scoobie gang, but coming to that conclusion when the show already did it for you is hardly treading on new ground.
When I first watch buffy I thought he was going to probably be the smart one in the group but he was just average in pretty much everything. He is a good person even though he goofs around alot.
Xander mattered so much, not in the way that the others did, but that's why he was a crucial part. Xander observed everything around him all of the time, and knew exactly what to do.
He's the Ron Weasley of Buffy. He screws up a lot and makes quips and stupid jokes but at the end of the day, he'll sacrifice himself to make sure that his friends live to fight another day. That's why Xander is my favorite character on Buffy. I have a soft spot for the quippy side-kicks.
I remember thinking everyone had a supernatural role. Angel- vamp, Spike-Vamp, Oz-wolf, Buffy-Slayer, Giles- watcher, Willow-witch, etc. Xander may not have had anything supernatural to help him but that was the point of his character. To be us, the audience. Willow very close to ending the world & no vampire, witch, etc was able to stop her. It took human kindness & love. Great story arc. One of the best from the entire series.
It was said in the episode that he lost one of his eyes, he was the witness of it all. he was the one that supposed to outlive them all and tell the story. his power was to be the glue that kept them sane.
Almost certainly the best scene of season 6. Yes, even better than "bored now." Alyson is totally convincing as Willow breaks down and falls into Xander's arms.
I always watch Buffy the vampire slayer series, if i am depressed, because it reminds me, that my life isn't that bad compared to Buffy and the gang. I dont think you can have a more depressed life then Buffy has, lol
Xander was the archetypal good friend..the one who screws up everything else he does but somehow manages to be a great friend and although he has his bad days doesnt give up on his friends .. The kind of friend we all wish we had in high school
"Is this the master plan? You're gonna stop me by telling me you love me?" Willow said. He did and he wasn't even trying to, he just wanted to be there with her in the end. Even if she did kill him, the last thing he would have told her is how much he loves her, and would die without regrets. Knowing someone out there loves you so much they are willing to die for you, it can't be described in words.
Worth noting that the comics which came after the TV series wrapped made it absolutely clear that by that point Willow is far far more powerful than Buffy or pretty much any of the previous "big bads". The only thing which could stop Willow was Willow. So, yeah, what you said. But also "dumb" Xander comes up with a plan which saves the world, for like the 3rd or 4th time ;)
I still remember getting to ask Nicholas Brendon back around 2000 about the rumor of him playing Spiderman. When he said it was just a rumor, the entire audience at his panel collectively groaned. He could have played Peter Parker in his SLEEP.
Damn it. I wish he played Spider Man instead of Tobey MacGuire. The actor should make the audience do the crying. The actor shouldn't be the one crying.
Literally never knew this and imagining this it would've not only felt more natural as a whole in the series with him playing the role...well all-right emotional and funny are in the same category but I point is I would've laughed more at ackward Peter peter and felt way more for the emotional sad stuff and trials he had to face if Nicholas Brendon had taken that role. But at least there used to be good spider man movies, now the MCU version is just total kiddie fodder that barely resembles spider man, more like CW+disney tv drama spiderman.

Yes while I do agree with your comment, I have to add although this was a great showing love..it doesn't even come close to the unparalleled work in smallville, especially seasons 8-10
Joss Whedon knew how to do it. The way this scene plays out and the double meaning of black magic and grief is perfectly blended. When you lose someone the way Willow lost Tara and you go completely over the deep end sometimes it takes a great friend and a big cry that can help.
i don't know if the writers ever intended for black magic and grief to be synonymous, if that's what you're saying? i think they used wreckless magic as a way to convey the coping seen in addiction. each time willow has experienced an extreme life change (whether it be good or bad), she uses magic to cope with it.
Tara was originally supposed to reappear as the First in Tara's form to torment Willow, but Amber Benson didn't want to play a doppelganger. She thought Tara should remain pure and untouched. Joss agreed, and they chose instead to use another character who had recently died speak about Tara to Willow (still to torment her).
Also Tara was supposed to be brought back to life by the Powers that be as a gift to Buffy (a gift she would have chosen) for saving the world at the very end of the show. But it did not make it to the screen, I think Benson wasn't avaible.

Xander was able to save Willow not through brute force, but with his words to her heart full of sorrow after the loss of Terra. This is a touching scene. This ending is the only one that really makes sense: sometimes, only love can save someone, not brute force.
This scene is probably one of the most powerful in the whole series. A truly human act of bravery and kindness. One that is often unmatched by the superpowers that are here on this show, it took friendship, love, and heart to break the magic fueled by pain and grief. An absolutely astounding mastery of storytelling that hasn't been forgotten by me.
I can sympathize with her pain. It feels like the world has been against me my entire life and now im insecure, have self destructive tendencies, and everything. Im 26, so far ive been through hell and back, and watched the people i love most die. Its a bitter life and its hard to hope mist of the time. Although i dont agree with taking matters into your own hands to end the world, i think we can sympathize with willow here. I wish we all had people like xander. I know without my wife that id be in a much worse spot
So many years on.... and still watching this bawling my eyes out. 😭 Truly was the best show ever created.... so many years on and never found anything that came close to comparing to BTVS... 😭 Xander meant everything here. Showed us that every person matters. 💗 ✨
I don't hate him, he has just done some pretty immature things. What he said to Dawn about her being extraordinary was great, probably his finest moment, and this scene. He knew he would die, so he might as well go out telling her he loves her.
Xander always comes off as a goofball but this dude is a fkn badass. The way he will just swing on a demon with no fear..bro easily could've came from a lineage of Knights in shining armor
This scene was so touching. Willow lost someone she loved but Xander was always there. He reminded her that she is still loved. The slayer couldn’t stop her, magic magic couldn’t stop her, but her best befriend helped her. Sometimes when we lose someone we forget the other ones who still love us
This was my favorite episode of the series. I'm sure there are more that are my favorite, but, this one just comes to mind as my favorite. Thanks for sharing!!!
My favorite scene from my favorite episode of my favorite TV show, with my favorite character, Willow. Alyson and Nick were always outstanding throughout the whole show, but never better than here. ::wipes away tears:: I love you too, Willow.
Throughout the whole series, Xander and Willow have a strong connection. Sure things, got a little bumpy along the way, but this scene highlights that, no matter what, Xander and Willow will always be connected.
I love that Buffy is a show that allowed actors to have emotional breakdowns, I've seen many Marvel movies where everyone seems stone cold deadpann pokerface, like, something traumatic happens, someone dies, or even worse things happen and they be like. Meh...
These scene drives me into tears at the end… because willow lost someone she loved so much in front of her, she was willing to destroy the world but only sacrifice and love brought her back to reality from her best friend. Every time it just brings me to tears because when you lose someone you love more than anything in this world you lose a big chunk of your soul and you believe that life is not worth living anymore. Some wounds can be healed and others are beyond healing, because it’s whether you choose to comeback to the light or stay in the darkness for we humans have both good and evil within ourselves. When we lose something we love it tears right through us more than anything in this world.
After the second " I love you" that one tear rolls down her face, that's when I lost it. Between that and the beating and hitting on him while breaking down 😭😭😭
I know. I rewatched the series and this scene is so epic. Xander knew Williow would not kill him. A trust and love for a childhood friend overcomes anything evil.
A truly powerful scene. It shows that you can be a vengeful powerful Uber witch but the love of your best friend who has known you since the sandbox will conquer all. Alyson Hannigan really delivered in this scene.
I feel her pain. I lost my bf in a car accident a year ago next week. I have yet to grieve the way I should. Just been angry at everything. This always hits hard.
While this is undoubtedly the greatest Xander/Willow moment, the scene in "Hell's Bells" (S06E16) where Xander and Willow say how much they love each other is a close second...
this is quite a powerful lesson, they tried everything to stop Willow, but fighting against something just make things even worse, but once you surrender and just send the vibration of love, things flows and everything seems to get better and healing.
what is really interesting is that if you take his words as the pure naked truth, and how can you not, this isn't really altruism. It is about a singular friendship. He isn't doing this for the world but that doesn't make any less powerful.
That last "I love you," always gets to me because Xander wasn't absolving Willow with those three little words, but forgiving her. That is one of the greatest acts of human love.
They are best friends and he does love her more than any man or woman could love her
He loves her dearly and forgives her - the main thing for me :) She then makes changes and the right steps to a better life.
This scene is so amazing, Xander, a regular human being, managed to save the world from the most powerful witch using love and friendship...
Yes, but also with the help of Giles when Willow absorbed his borrowed powers from a coven of witches in England. Which it managed to tap into any humanity she had left in her!

whisperienced The person was wrong. No need to tread over their feelings, the show itself still came out (almost) 20 years ago. :)
I'm not treading over feelings. Also 13.6 years and 20 years are no where near (almost) status. If math is a problem get off youtube and go to math class.
“It doesn’t matter....I’ll still love you” gets me every time 😥
This whole scene is great but this might be the best line, along with but hey I still wanna hang..
Dang. 16 years later and this scene still makes me cry harder than any scene of any television show ever.
"your gonna beat me by telling me you love me?" he does. and it works. so emotional.
I've always admired Xander throughout this excellent series, but this moment he truly shined:) Xander's the man!
Willow: Is this the master plan? You're gonna stop me by telling me you love me?
Xander: Well, I was gonna walk you off a cliff and hand you an anvil, but it seemed kinda cartoony.
Oh Xander even in an emotional scene you make us laugh
Brilliant. Buffy still stands head and shoulders above other shows, of the time and today.
Xander was able to save Willow not through brute force, but with his words to her heart full of sorrow after the loss of Terra. This is a touching scene.
This ending is the only one that really makes sense: sometimes, only love can save someone, not brute force.
Such a wonderful scene. I tear up every time I watch it. The power of friendship and love conquers all.
Rewatched this episode today. They did such a good job. One of the best scenes from Buffy. Has it all.
This is my favorite scene in this entire series. The sweeping music... the emotions.. it gets me every time.
That moment when Willow finally just breaks down and she cries even to this day it gets to me
This scene is probably one of the most powerful in the whole series.
there is a lot of good acting in this show.
Fans who hate Xander, listing all the ways he's an awful person, conveniently forget moments like this.
I don't hate him, he has just done some pretty immature things. What he said to Dawn about her being extraordinary was great, probably his finest moment, and this scene. He knew he would die, so he might as well go out telling her he loves her.
One of the most epic moments that ever happened on the show
Xander always comes off as a goofball but this dude is a fkn badass.
Sometimes when we lose someone we forget the other ones who still love us
Touching scene. Alyson Hannigan makes a great job.
I'm not crying. It's just been raining... on my face.
I feel so bad for willow but even thou it's a show , I just can't believe the pain she felt
kinda how faith collasped into angel
true...even though Xander and Willow's connection goes way back...while Faith and Angel had similar experiences
This was my favorite episode of the series. I'm sure there are more that are my favorite, but, this one just comes to mind as my favorite. Thanks for sharing!!!
Oh! Oh Oh! Just love this scene. Thank you so much for posting it :)
This was one of the best scenes in the entire series. I love these two characters
SFX really didn't age as well as I had hoped, but DAYUM, this show had heart.
Those ninjas cutting onions again!
The part where Willow's hair turned red was so satisfying
Always makes me cry to this day!! I miss this show so much.... It was and STILL is my absolute favorite...
No hero, No slayer, No vamp, just ordinary but great guy who saved the world.
GAAAAAHHH!!!! Why do i cry every time i watch this?!?!?
I'm crying too. Also, awesome screen name. I loved playing Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Turns her into a weeping willow.
My favorite scene from my favorite episode of my favorite TV show, with my favorite character, Willow. Alyson and Nick were always outstanding throughout the whole show, but never better than here. ::wipes away tears:: I love you too, Willow.
This story arc was so damn good.
This really showed the strength of Xander's heart.
One of the best TV shows of my childhood
Throughout the whole series, Xander and Willow have a strong connection. Sure things, got a little bumpy along the way, but this scene highlights that, no matter what, Xander and Willow will always be connected.
This made me cry .willow was blocking out the pain and zander really helped her
I love that Buffy is a show that allowed actors to have emotional breakdowns, I've seen many Marvel movies where everyone seems stone cold deadpann pokerface, like, something traumatic happens, someone dies, or even worse things happen and they be like. Meh...
This scene is one of the reasons why I love this show so goddamn much
Anyone else here watching in 2020 and still effected by the amazing storytelling and instrumentals.
Nothing is more powerful than unconditional love.
One of my fav scenes. I’ll still love you 😢
These scene drives me into tears at the end… because willow lost someone she loved so much in front of her, she was willing to destroy the world but only sacrifice and love brought her back to reality from her best friend.
This was EPIC on so many levels! Get to meet Nick next week so stoked!
You don't defeat evil with "good." You defeat evil with love.
Willow et trop belle en sorcière sa lui va bien ! J'aime beaucoup la série... !!!! J'ai l'intégrale de la série...!

While this is undoubtedly the greatest Xander/Willow moment, the scene in "Hell's Bells" (S06E16) where Xander and Willow say how much they love each other is a close second...
xander saves the day
State the obvious much botch
This was hands down my fav season of the show. Death goddess Willow was a treat to watch and root for
Everyone hates on Xander and he's definitely unlikable at times, but he always came through for his friends. Every time.
This shows how deeply Xander loved Willow no matter what. Top 5 most emotional scenes of the show for me.
Closest anyone actually got to destroying the world. And not for a lack of trying.
It would make sense since Xander is the person who knew Willow since childhood
I love how his light stops the flow of evil by just standing there.
One of the greatest scenes in a series loaded with greatest scenes. This one is one of my favorites.
True friends until the end. That why I always with for my friends, when they needed...
this is quite a powerful lesson, they tried everything to stop Willow, but fighting against something just make things even worse, but once you surrender and just send the vibration of love, things flows and everything seems to get better and healing.
what is really interesting is that if you take his words as the pure naked truth, and how can you not, this isn't really altruism. It is about a singular friendship. He isn't doing this for the world but that doesn't make any less powerful.
slashandbones13 very deep
I do think he was trying to save the world somewhat. He was also trying to save his best friend.
This popped up in my feed on a Sunday morning. A Carpenter saving the world with love. Who'd a thunk it?
Good point!
Everybody hates Xander. but he was a fucking champ in this scene. i love him! the useless human saves the world.
still makes me cry to this day. a love and friends like that is so rare
I honestly miss this show and how it shows that love can conquer evil I know it’s cringey but it’s true... I love Xander and Willow... as best friends
He was her true brother.
One of the best scenes of the show, Tara was my favorite secondary character !!
