Would have loved to get a side-by-side comparison of hollow-body vs solid. The hollow sounds great, but I have no idea what it means in that context/in comparison.
I have a hollow body that I play metal on all the time. It's actually better than the jackson solid body I have surprisingly. Still one of the best guitars I've ever tried
Loads of people have made a Hollowbody Metal videos recently, I'd urge you continue it anyway. It's been on my list for years but I've never managed to get hold of one until now. Thanks for watching! :)
This makes sense, I’ve always thought this would work. Hollowbodies have a fuller and deeper tone which is the essence of metal. Play a Sabbath riff on a high end gretsch and it’ll get you in the soul
Having just added a semi-hollow (an Ibanez Artcore) to my guitar harem, and having had the audacity to hit the gain on my amp and play Celtic Frost and Darkthrone riffs on it the first night I had her, I can safely say you can play metal on a supposed "jazz" guitar.
I have been trying for years to get acoustic to sound good with distortion. I've been able to get it to sound good at home, playing by myself, but live (especially with drummers who play really loud), it usually sounds like shit. It sounds muddy as fuck no matter how you adjust your pedal and amp settings, and/or distortion is weaker/quieter than clean or vice versa (even after adding an EQ pedal into the mix), and chances are, you are going to get a fuckload of (unwanted) feedback even with a soundhole cover (actually, at some venues, the soundhole covers made it worse). Basically, it can sound good if recording at home/in a studio, but jamming with a full band or even just a drummer, or playing a show, it's not usually going to sound good because you aren't going to be able to get the volume you need to compete with the other instruments without sacrificing sound quality. Sometimes it can sound good depending on the venue, but that is rare. It's dissappointing because I've always wanted to be able to switch from acoustic to electric at the push of a pedal at shows.
If a 335 into a wall of Marshalls was good enough for Clapton when in Cream... And I suppose that disproves the main (non-aesthetic) concern with using hollow/semi-hollow bodies in highgain situations - They are worse for feedback, but back in the day, Clapton got ALL his volume from his backline. Guitarists today have front-of-house PAs and noise gates and other toys to keep their sound controlled.
semihollow guitars feedback more than solid body guitars. That’s a real thing. So in live scenarios, with amps on stage, and the PA going, with monitors, there are dozens of problem areas waiting to send your guitar into unexpected and uncontrollable feedback.
I'm the proud owner of this exact model. the CST 24 HB TB (Tobacco Burst). It has a coil split for the rear humbucker, a graphite nut and great tuners. Intonation needed a slight adjustment out of the box but it was basically in tune out of the box after shipping from Germany to NY... A cross Atlantic flight, all that handling, and still in tune. Just gonna say this. For the price, you feel like you're stealing the thing from Thomann.
Lol I used to work at guitar center and used to always play a hollow body through a triple rectifier and it sounded sick . Would play slayer , killswitch , and anything heavy I could think of . And yes its was " the other brand $$ " most of the time , once in awhile I would grab a gretch and really watch people double take lol. Awesome job bro . By far you are my favorite you tube player
Been using a Bob Weir Dangelico for metal lately. Its tuned to B standard currently with 60g 13g strings. Djent tones sound thick and chunky. Loving it. Also great tone on the Fade to Black solo 🤘🤘
I've never heard of this. I think hollowbodies are great for metal. I played a few Power Metal riffs on an Ibanez hollow body one time and it just felt right.
I like both Jazz and Metal. In fact I think Jazz metal is something that needs to be explored more. In any case, I came to see if I could buy a hollow body guitar to play both and seems like it is indeed possible. Plus looks wise, it looks pretty cool for neoclassical.
Well, I've seen guys playing Metal shredding the hell out of single coils (Yngwie, I'm looking at you). So as long as the hollow body guitar has pickups that stand well that much gain, I guess they work. P.S.: I've seen those Harley Benton guitars around, but I never considered them because for the price they seem to be cheap knock-offs. But this video made me change my mind. I'll try them out the next time I go to a guitar store.
A Big Thank You for this video. Arguments are now CLOSED! Please never delete this video. Anyone who will argue with me again that hollow can't metal, I will immediately refer them here.
Wes Borland had a custom Yamaha long time ago which was a hollow body. Yeah, I know, Limp Bizkit, but Wes is a really talented guy and he was the first one to use it for heavier riffs.
Killing Joke's Geordie Walker plays all of their stuff on a 1952 Gibson ES-295... and I dare anyone to tell me their more recent stuff isn't ridiculously heavy.
I have an Ibanez Artcore AG-35 (I'm pretty sure, there's a fucking gazillion different codes for the artcores). It's the one with a hollow Les Paul shape and no pick guard. ppl underestimate hollow body guitars, they have a lot more low end and well rounded tone. I'm using a Semi-hollow ibanez As50 from 1981 and I play a ton of punk/90's alternative.
Well Rush was a band that used to play proto metal/heavy rock (potato potato) and on those albums where Rush sounded really heavy Alex Lifeson played on his hollowed body Gibson ES 335 (I'm not sure that this was specifically this model, but they look familiar) In Poland we have an alternative band called Luxtorpeda. Their vocalist and lead guitarist plays on hollowed body so yeah
my first guitar was a gold Ebanez from 69 offered by my cousin( blues guy) just like that one and I played Death Metal in my first concerts with it but it was not very good on the solos , had lack of sustain even when i pushed by the distortion so after a equalizer i decided to buy a humbucker Seymour Duncan that helped a lot and I continued to use it daily for two years until I bought my first Washburn, i still have that guitar , since 1986....dam i m getting old

Awesome! Changing pickups on hollow bodies is often very difficult as they don’t have any plastic covers on the back of the guitar to access the volume and tone pots. You’ll need to do it all via the f holes on the front of the guitar. It’s not impossible though, but I’d definitely recommend getting a pro to swap them out for you. :)

Definitely as heavy as if you were to use a solid body electric guitar. Though I'm not quite sure whether it sounds as solid. But I suppose as long as the right person is playing it, it doesn't really matter much, if at all.
Breaking Benjamin's front man Benjamin Burnley used PRS baritone hollowbodies for their albums Phobia, Dear Agony and the most part of Dark Before Dawn before he switched to ESP, so yeah, hollowbodies can be metal, depends on the pickups it has I guess
That's exactly what I think of every time someone mentions a hollowbody for metal. But, there were some drawbacks that he encountered. There's an interview of him (Linked below) saying that he had to stuff it with foam to play live.
