To be fair, a *lot* of the early jazz pioneers knew almost nothing about theory or the "proper" basics of playing their instrument. (And by early... I mean like the very, very beginning of the genre/respective subgenre.) Mostly because they just didn't have access to that kind of education. Not to say that other people should willfully follow that route; because most of the worldwide known jazz guys *did* know that kind of stuff.

As a psychedelic rock player who learned some jazz to better understand theory and get better at improvisation (and had about as much fun as Nik), this is so goddamn true it hurts. Repeat that spicy phrase and now its a cool motif. Create dissonance? Resolve it up or down a half step, now its a passing tone and resolving it sounds good. I feel like I wasted so much time learning the musical equivalent of calculus just to ultimately learn "repeat your spicy phrases and resolve dissonances by ear; rhythm and melodic phrasing are what normal people respond to".

I'll never get tired of metal musicians being intimidated by jazz's complexity and finesse, as well as jazz musicians being intimidated by metal's precision and virtuosity.
Jazz improvisation is learning a bunch of shit until you just do it automatically by looking at chords and cadences, whilst trying to balance blind improvisation with trying to create a cohesive melody. Playing chords, though hard at first, becomes easy as you learn more chord shapes and are able to automatically play them when you see them, as well as decide the best voicing. I think playing lead is a great deal more challenging in jazz because you are always learning so much, whereas your ability to play chords well plateaus after you've learned enough.

So in G# Major (7 sharps, you monster) the notes would be E (b13, bass note) G# (I) B# (3) D (b5) F## (7) A# (9) C (b11) You picked the worst key for an example but there it is. Can't physically play it on guitar (7 different notes) but it's doable on a piano. The problem with naming big chords like this is that the context actually matters. The key of the piece and the chords that come before it. If I saw that chord in a vacuum, I'd maybe call it Eaugb7#9#11b13, but It's all up to personal interpretation at that point.
Nik, chords can have different voicings when playing piano or guitar, but they remove the bottom note of the main chord, and leave that to the bassist. So, some “rootless voicings” as they call them, are more appropriate for certain chords, and try not to clash your voicing with the pianist. Jazz Standards are basically the bread and butter of songs in jazz, blues, Latin, etc.
As a metal guitarist turned jazz player (going to college now for jazz guitar), I seriously think you should do a follow up video where you get a jazz teacher to show you some stuff. It would be a really cool way to make a part 2 of this journey. Also if you like Revocation, Dave Davidson has a new band called Gargoyl and it's basically jazz-metal and is full of crazy chords and stuff.

Don't get me wrong it's a great way to improve your music theory and technical skillz but 100% zero money in it these days. Back when I was a teenager, I was studying music and like almost everyone else, Jazz caught my attention, so I decided to try it but then I realized how hard and time consuming it is, that I decided to stop it and keep going for metal lol. Now that I think about it, I could’ve played jazz for my friends weddings and earn some money as that’s quite common in the weddings I’ve been invited to 😂
I remember when I started learning jazz, but already had 2 semesters of music theory before I ever started, so I understood what was being said. The problem I had was the chords since they were shapes I never played before in my life, but through not wanting to look up EVERY SINGLE CHORD I came across, I quickly learned things like "hey, I could just use the shape I learned for this other chord and move it up/down to play similar chords", "I've memorized where these notes are, so maybe I can move them around and get an inversion", and "If I remember the formula right, I should be able to just raise/lower this one note by a fret in a chord shape I already know to be able to play this new chord." There's probably numerous guides that teach those exact things, but I was going at it alone, so the feeling I got when I figured that out by myself was great and it felt like I had found a shortcut; even though it's not a shortcut at all.
That little bit you played at 4:40 sounded pretty good. I mainly play metal, but I dabble in jazz. It's not that hard to figure out how to play. Some real challenging music is some from the 15th - 17th centuries. I can't even get past the second bar trying to play it
It's surprising how guitarists who are much better than me technique-wise have no idea what the 3rd, 5th, and 7th intervals are! I couldn't believe your face when those were mentioned! I guess it shows how much it's helped me having a quality guitar teacher the past couple years! Wait till you start learning about 9s, 11s, and 13s!
I've also been self-taught when it comes to music, playing mainly prog metal but with an increasing desire for experimenting with various other genres for about 10 years before choosing to seriously start to learn theory. I currently study at a music college in Tokyo and I'm learning jazz theory quite a lot (because jazz theory is also a big part of Japanese pop music). And I must say that as much as trusting your ears will always be the most important thing imo, learning jazz theory has been incredibly useful. There's a lot of stuff (like smooth transitioning between chords that would seem unrelated) that was really hard to figure out without theory. PS: Oh, I wish the solution was indeed to just play random notes haha

I started with jazz lol. Took me years of deep theory study to realize that just playing chromatic bullshit in between root notes is *jazz*. You decoded it a lot faster than I did 😂😂

As a person who is almost equally good at metal and jazz I find it both funny and self empowering that I can do something well which Nik cannot. Im only a 3-4month guitar player. I thought i was picking it up fairly quickly, playing through chords and accidentally finding songs... and watching people to realize how much i dont know. Im living vicariously through your mistakes. Make more of them. Lol
In all honesty, chords like min9 or minadd9 were used a quite a bit in the '00s Metalcore/Post-Hardcore scene. Only drawback was that most of these guys (not having a thorough understanding of music theory most of the time) only knew these chords by shape or sound as opposed to name. Beyond that, rock/metal bands (usually of the progressive/technical variety) have used the harmonic/melodic minor-derived minMaj7 and/or minMaj9 chord voicings as well.
My rule on jazz is if you have no idea what key or mode or whatever is "right" then just play some chromatic stuff a little bit until it starts sounding correct (exhibit: 5:00). I barely remember any actual music theory I learned as a kid except diminished = down half step and augmented = up half step from the interval it's tied to, and then whatever the number is off the chord root generally tells you what voicings like a Dm7 vs a Dm9 - the latter includes the 9th while the former doesn't, so it actually changes the voicings of the same basic rooted chord. I think the roman numerals in the notation are for what root or mode of the key is as a kind of improv cheatsheet. At least in standard blues it's usually like a I-V-IV-I progression, but it's all in relation to the key of the song (cheatmode: play blues scale in that key).

7;25 pretty accurate ngl. When I started improvising I'd play ALMOST random notes sliding muddy notes into better notes. My teacher thought I was modulating between keys lol. Extended chords sound great, but they're notated horribly. Essentially you just stack notes on top of regular chords, which correlate to the scale. Example: CMaj9 is a regular c major chord with the higher C lowered to a B and a D added an octave above the 2nd (D above the root)
In college the jazz band had need of a guitarist. I was classical guitar major so I didn’t think it would be that bad. Then I got the “tome” of guitar solos in the form of handwritten sheet music. The thing about jazz composition is that it appears to be improvised, but every note is planned

E minor with the 9, A minor the same, F# Minor 7 with a flat 5 .. i wanna say thats a dominant chord, which if it is, i think thats the 5th in the key. idk what alt means yet.. I gotta say your by ear improve over it was pretty awesome.
This was fun! Jazz is hard, but also a very varied genre. If you want to check out something a bit different than standards and such, listen to The Red One by Pat Metheny & John Scofield. It's guitar focused and has parts that sound more like rock than anything. Maybe it's a bit easier to lean into as a metal guitarist... I can't play jazz to save my life, but if I wanted to start learning, I think I'd begin with these riffs. Or whatever jazzers call it.
Know your 7th, minor 7th and major 7th chords, and learn to solo over the classic I - ii - V chord progression. Those are 2 good places for jazz novices to start. And if you get lost during an improvised solo, fill in the gaps with chromatic patterns until you land on a note that sounds ok to your ears. You'd be surprised at how "jazzy" you can sound with conventional chords and scales you already know simply by applying a swinging, shuffle-like feel to them. Pick up some Django Reinhardt recordings and listen especially to the rhythm guitar and how the picking hand approaches playing with a shuffle-like attack on the strings. A lot of jazz is about having the right feel for the song. And in addition to Django's recordings, listen to some Charlie Christian (especially during his Benny Goodman days), Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Joe Pass and Chet Atkins just to name a few. You'll get a wealth of ideas for licks and rhythm patterns by listening to their recordings. The sky's the limit, so best of luck to you on your journey down the jazz rabbit hole!
As a metal guitarist I find jazz to be extremely fun to play. Learning theory is very useful for any genre and improvising is also good. Find a jazz backing track and just try to improvise over it

I've also been self-taught when it comes to music, playing mainly prog metal but with an increasing desire for experimenting with various other genres for about 10 years before choosing to seriously start to learn theory. I currently study at a music college in Tokyo and I'm learning jazz theory quite a lot (because jazz theory is also a big part of Japanese pop music). And I must say that as much as trusting your ears will always be the most important thing imo, learning jazz theory has been incredibly useful. There's a lot of stuff (like smooth transitioning between chords that would seem unrelated) that was really hard to figure out without theory.
PS: Oh, I wish the solution was indeed to just play random notes haha

As a Jazz, math rock, and prog rock guitarist I find you learning these genres very entertaining lol. Jazz is actually pretty easy imo. The hardest part is finding someone who doesn't overcomplicate it.
I started with jazz lol. Took me years of deep theory study to realize that just playing chromatic bullshit in between root notes is *jazz*. You decoded it a lot faster than I did 😂😂

As a person who is almost equally good at metal and jazz I find it both funny and self empowering that I can do something well which Nik cannot. When he fumbled over the half diminished chord (Bm7b5) and called the V chord the “vee” I think I chuckled 😂 Thank you Nik, for making me feel good about my guitar playing for once 😂

In all honesty, chords like min9 or minadd9 were used a quite a bit in the '00s Metalcore/Post-Hardcore scene. Only drawback was that most of these guys (not having a thorough understanding of music theory most of the time) only knew these chords by shape or sound as opposed to name. Beyond that, rock/metal bands (usually of the progressive/technical variety) have used the harmonic/melodic minor-derived minMaj7 and/or minMaj9 chord voicings as well.

My rule on jazz is if you have no idea what key or mode or whatever is "right" then just play some chromatic stuff a little bit until it starts sounding correct (exhibit: 5:00). I barely remember any actual music theory I learned as a kid except diminished = down half step and augmented = up half step from the interval it's tied to, and then whatever the number is off the chord root generally tells you what voicings like a Dm7 vs a Dm9 - the latter includes the 9th while the former doesn't, so it actually changes the voicings of the same basic rooted chord.
I think the roman numerals in the notation are for what root or mode of the key is as a kind of improv cheatsheet. At least in standard blues it's usually like a I-V-IV-I progression, but it's all in relation to the key of the song (cheatmode: play blues scale in that key).
As a blues guitarist, I'm scared.

7;25 pretty accurate ngl. When I started improvising I'd play ALMOST random notes sliding muddy notes into better notes. My teacher thought I was modulating between keys lol. Extended chords sound great, but they're notated horribly. Essentially you just stack notes on top of regular chords, which correlate to the scale. Example: CMaj9 is a regular c major chord with the higher C lowered to a B and a D added an octave above the 2nd (D above the root)

In college the jazz band had need of a guitarist. I was classical guitar major so I didn’t think it would be that bad. Then I got the “tome” of guitar solos in the form of handwritten sheet music. The thing about jazz composition is that it appears to be improvised, but every note is planned

you got this! that jam tracks channel is awesome! the chords are pretty straight forward if im reading it right... except that B7alt. it tells you the chord progression they are playing there. E minor with the 9, A minor the same, F# Minor 7 with a flat 5 .. i wanna say thats a dominant chord, which if it is, i think thats the 5th in the key. idk what alt means yet.. I gotta say your by ear improve over it was pretty awesome.
This was fun! Jazz is hard, but also a very varied genre. If you want to check out something a bit different than standards and such, listen to The Red One by Pat Metheny & John Scofield. It's guitar focused and has parts that sound more like rock than anything. Maybe it's a bit easier to lean into as a metal guitarist...
I can't play jazz to save my life, but if I wanted to start learning, I think I'd begin with these riffs. Or whatever jazzers call it.
Know your 7th, minor 7th and major 7th chords, and learn to solo over the classic I - ii - V chord progression. Those are 2 good places for jazz novices to start. And if you get lost during an improvised solo, fill in the gaps with chromatic patterns until you land on a note that sounds ok to your ears. You'd be surprised at how "jazzy" you can sound with conventional chords and scales you already know simply by applying a swinging, shuffle-like feel to them. Pick up some Django Reinhardt recordings and listen especially to the rhythm guitar and how the picking hand approaches playing with a shuffle-like attack on the strings. A lot of jazz is about having the right feel for the song. And in addition to Django's recordings, listen to some Charlie Christian (especially during his Benny Goodman days), Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Joe Pass and Chet Atkins just to name a few. You'll get a wealth of ideas for licks and rhythm patterns by listening to their recordings. The sky's the limit, so best of luck to you on your journey down the jazz rabbit hole!

As a metal guitarist I find jazz to be extremely fun to play. Learning theory is very useful for any genre and improvising is also good. Find a jazz backing track and just try to improvise over it
