@DickEnchilada Fair enough. Messing around with power chords on bass is plenty of fun, actually. Shame the low end of the E and A strings are too muddy to make the root and 5th sound discernible. :(
Honestly yousician helped me a lot, and I continue to use it for the random chord challenge thing it has. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to learn guitar from nothing.
I used it to learn piano because there isn’t many programs like it for that purpose, but as far as guitar goes I would personally spend the money and get rocksmith 2014. It’s just a much more enjoyable experience. It has a lot more songs that you’re more likely to actually recognize and enjoy, a more streamlined looking display, technique specific lesson videos and practice games, and the narrator isn’t so patronizing and doesn’t bug you about getting the premium version between every single song. Rocksmith+ is also an option that doesn’t look bad but I haven’t personally used it so I can’t speak for it.
i think the app really wants users to learn the music theory. not every musician learn music by learning the theory, though, that's the thing. if you want to focus on the theory, you should get a real teacher, not an app. so yeah, this app is pretty garbage if i say so myself.
It is easy and helpful. However, the learning process of each individual is different. For example, some students might need more visual/auditory demonstrations to understand exactly what they're learning, and that's when hiring a REAL teacher would be necessary, and might prove to be more helpful than paying full-price for a mobile app. I don't know about other 'guitar-pros' that you might be thinking about, but based on Nik's video, he doesn't necessarily care about musical theory mumbo-jumbo (hence, the "i dont know the chord names, give me the tabs!"). And that doesn't make him any less-skilled or a bad musician, it means he has his own technique and formula for himself to learn, that he already feels comfortable with. Not being able to follow instructions on a "learning mobile app" does not mean a beginner musician is dumb. It may because they're simply overwhelmed, or have no idea what the lessons are, what's the importance of learning these topics. I think what these "online music learning apps" do bad at, is that they try so hard to convince beginners to be their mandatory learning source. While this is not usually the case, beginners might be appealed to waste money on online features that may be less helpful than hiring a real teacher.
Remember this video when you see someone play a tasty riff then brag about only playing for 6 months. You can be amazing at one part of guitar, but it takes dedication and consistency be able to move between styles. OK, so you played a sweet arpeggio. Do you know what note is the root? Can you play that chord across the neck?
