I relate to number 4 so much, I learned English by playing Final Fantasy X which only had English VA but had German subtitles. That does wonders for learning a language.

@@mat_musicat True, it was because the subtitles were translated from the Japanese version rather than the English one. But at that point you could really tell when it matched and when it didn't.

I was just thinking about this the other day. Dark Souls 3 actually changed my life. It taught me that something that seems impossible can actually be overcome with time and determination. I didn't understand this before. I didn't understand that the process of progress involves long periods where you feel like you're wasting your time. I always gave up at that point, never stuck with anything, and my life was a mess because of it. I enjoyed DS3 enough to stick with it, and the process of improving my skill to overcome each new challenge opened my eyes to the way human progress actually works. I've applied those lessons to other areas of my life now, like fitness and learning, and am reaping the rewards.

I don't know about skills but gaining knowledge by playing video games happened for me and my twin brother decades ago. We both had science class as well as similar exams on the subject so when we both received near perfect scores the teachers asked how we knew so much about the current subject as it was a surprise exam. We both smiled and said "Learned all of it from a great game we have beaten over a dozen times each by now."
That exam was all about how mitochondria works in the human body and the game....of course...was Parasite Eve. lol Thanks square.

First things first. Thanks for this video and Language it's definitely an ability that video games contributed a lot to the English that I have today. I just LOVE English since ALWAYS and I live in Brazil and a big part of my Knowledge came from PlayStation games since the PlayStation 1 in the 90's. My English is not fluent yet but Thanks to the games, I just did 6 months of English Course just to give me foundation and I can read books in English and perfectly understand all of you guys are saying here, I can talk in the chat, I love this channel and you all also help me to improve this knowledge. I just have a little difficult to express myself sometimes but I'm work on it. So, thanks PlayStation 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 in the future and thank you guys to help me almost everyday with this language that I love so much. Thanks!

GTA 4 taught me how to drive a speedboat. I learned from the game that when the steering is done by the outboard motor instead of a rudder you have to apply power to be able to turn. This came in handy when I drove one for real on holiday, I could do it but my wife (a non-gamer) couldn’t. I’m also convinced I can fly a helicopter but sadly I haven’t had the chance in real life.

There was once a lock-picking skill in a game I played, as a kid. At one point, I stopped, said, "...This is a thing you can actually do in real life, right?" And like an hour of internet tutorials and effort later, I'd opened a padlock. In the intervening years, I've gotten two of my uncles back into their houses, helped with multiple filing cabinets whose keys were lost, and probably some other things, too. Granted, I didn't learn this FROM the game...but it did kick things off, anyway.

Not quite as exciting as learning to be a pro racing driver through GT, but I did learn how to manage my power and avoid crashing in a real life go kart, after playing as Blood Falcon in F-Zero for the GBA. The guy has no grip, so you need to manage your power while cornering.
I only skidded twice... though I didn't know how to use the breaks, so I was going much slower than the other drivers, leading to multiple overtakes.
