    In Final Fantasy VII there was a point where RED XIII's old man wants you to get a Key located somewhere in the world ( i believe it ended up being under water near Emerald weapon). I searched the world so much for this item that all my characters were level 99( I think this part is also located on the 2nd of three disks) and eventually I actually forgot what I was even looking for. Turns out you can obtain the key before the old man even tells you to, so all I actually needed to do was speak to him again. Instead, I took his advice and went looking, I looked for this item for at least a year thinking that I was never going to find what I was looking for. Needless to say that the rest of the game was a breeze once I figured out that I already had the key. I know I should of looked in my Key Items the whole time, but I obviously didn't.

    • @BigK0003
      @BigK0003 5 лет назад +1

      I had almost the same experience. Except the underwater tunnel where the key is located looks very similar to another which leads to Lurcrecia's cave. Thought it was the same one so i ignored it every time.. Or just saw the dead end and thought "nothing here" i spent days looking for the key. I finally broke down and bought the guide. Total facepalm moment when I finally found it.. But like you, I had gained sooo many lvls exploring everywhere that I breezed thru the rest like nothin.

    I actually play Xbox and have never owned a PlayStation, but I love your videos; they are so entertaining and relatable to all gamers regardless of the system.
    Back in the day before the internet we had to just keep playing the game until we passed the difficult parts, but we did also resort to cheat books and hard copy strategy guides, as well as the cheats section of the monthly subscription to Nintendo Power magazine that we had. My brothers and I also invited friends over to see if they could beat it or had a different, more successful method of approach.

    'TYPES OF TROPHIES THAT MADE GETTING THE PLATNIUM MUCH HARDER'
    'Hard mode' trophies - Wolfinstien 2 was notorious for its hardest difficulty with no continues. Also, the Uncharted games and Dragon Age: Inquisition had my blood boiling all the way through.
    'X number' trophies' - Often requiring an insane amount of kills, collected items, completed quests and can these take anywhere from a few hours to a few sodding days! Looking at you 'Batting 500' from Diablo 3!
    'Don't Mess Up' trophies - Beat the level without getting hit, using a certain item ONLY, in under X minutes, with an S Rank, without your parents disowning you. You know, the usual.
    'Online Trophies - Just...just stop, please.
    'Play X amount of hours' trophies - I got 100% on Saint's Row 4 & Gat out of hell and still had over 10 hours of time to waste EACH before the trophy popped, had to leave the PS4 on all night.
    'Complete the Challenges' trophies - This is really bad because usually they never give the player an ACTUAL in-game reward for all the hard work and patience. Just a trophy.
    But the 2 WORST ones are:
    'MISSABLE' trophies - Better look up some guides with possible spoilers or you'll miss these trophies in events you haven't played yet and are usually really late in the game.
    Grind trophies - Unlike the 'X number' trophy where there is a set goal of say '100 enemies'. This is more like killing as many enemies as possible in the HOPES you get the materials for the trophy. If 100 didn't warrant you enough, then kill 200 or 300 until you succeed.

    • @kaitlyngarner740

      Online trophies in predominantly single player games are a menace. I will never platinum AC Black Flag because of those 5 online trophies. I am not an online gamer, I try to avoid it as much as possible.
      Also as a part of missable trophies; Hidden Trophies that you don't get from doing parts of the story. These are rare but they crop up when you don't expect it. Battlefront 2 has the "Kill 5 enemies with 1 barrage" which is a hidden trophy. So unless you look up trophy lists online, you will not get this trophy unless you did it by accident

    • @moretotheshell

      @aidoomcgoo7916 5 лет назад

      @@moretotheshellI used Wolfenstein 2 as an example. I'm not that much of a lunatic to try the 'Mein Liben trophy'. XD
      As for the uncharted games , they got easier as the series progressed but it would still take 3 days to beat it. Uncharted 1 on the other hand was a full week...cause that game was harder than getting Dave to platnium 1 game.

    Rob, I have a video suggestion:
    6 times we got jump-scared in games that weren't horror games.
    I even have games and scenarios to suggest, in the following order.
    6. In any FPS game when you walk through a door without noticing the claymore mine/C4/tactical RC and get blown to blazes.
    5. The first time you got attacked by a moray eel in Asassin's Creed 4 Black Flag.
    4. Every time you fast travel to Mordor in LEGO Lord Of The Rings and get Jumpscared by the eye of Sauron.
    3. Every time Peeves jumped out of a locked chest in the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets video game.
    2. When Herobrine attacks in Minecraft.
    1. When you "accidentally" steal something in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and you are about to go on your way when suddenly... "STOP! You violated the law!" you are stopped by a guard.

I spent months trying to think of new ideas... Eventually I just started over from the start, anxious about when I finally got to Adel again and still no better idea about how to beat her, until finally I fight Adel... and beat her my first try.
    Turns out -- something I did not know at the time -- in VIII enemies level with you. My first save, I was level 75 and she was too strong for me. On my second save, I was only level 35 and beat her no trouble.

    God I am giving away my age a bit but eh well. This video was like strolling down memory lane when my video game journey began as a bright eyed little girl sitting in front of a black and white with my shiny new NES. So many hours and sometimes days trying to figure out how to get past that one particularly hard boss in final fantasy. Yea I didn't get color tv right away so worked with what I had. Strategy guides and such. No chance of that. Took a bit of grit , sweat and sometimes tears and sleepless nights to figure out how to get past that digital obstacle blocking your virtual 2D path. Its so much simpler then it was before. Memories right? Cheers all. Love every bit of shows. Keep it up.

    *Spoilers*
    I just didn't know that Dettlaff was coming for a fight because I avoided the Internet because of fear of spoilers. He said he just wanted to talk! I had no health items whatsoever my sword and armor were damaged and I had no repair kits. Thankfully that was my original save of the game so I started a new game plus played through the entire main story (because why not) and played all of blood and wine again while all the way through thinking about that final boss battle and preparing for it. I read the glossary and learned about vampires, gathered all the ingredients and made the superior vampire oil and just basically destroyed Dettlaff when I finally faced him again. Ahh The Witcher 3. If you can't beat a boss, grind a bunch of levels just to see if they are succeptable to being outleveled. If a puzzle have you stumped, write down every move you have, and how they can be combined, and then just go through every solution you can think off!

    Going back pre console, C64 and spectrum games were notoriously hard. Games such as Forbidden forest, Dizzy and Maniac Mansion were filled with puzzles that were not always logical. So you had to just try EVERYTHING. Stuck in a weird mirror world with a queen chess piece blocking your path? Try picking up some chewing gum so that it sticks to your hand, so you can then pull the sword from the stone, become king and defeat the queen. Logic quest aside, you also had items that would break the game if you picked them up (hole in the pocket..im looking at you), items that were useless but you spent hours trying to get to work(Maniac mansions gas-less chainsaw) and switches that did stuff but you were never quite sure what (Codemaster loved doing this, with their Vampire game being one that has always stuck in my mind). Add to all this the fact that there were no saves,and that most games did not even have lives, so one hit from a bad guy would put you right back at that start. How did we beat games pre-internet? With a lot of patience.

I spared him like the goody twoshoes I was: BIG MISTAKE. Little did I know this meant that later on, when fighting a demon general, that angel general would come back and be like "hello there, now you have to fight me too!" so an already tough bossfight suddenly changed into a double bossfight where you'd have to take care of both bosses and their mechanics simultaneously... My attack power was abysmal. I could not defeat Adel with my physical attacks alone, they just didn't cause enough damage because of how weak I was. Any damage I did, would easily get healed when she siphoned energy from Rinoa. I couldn't do magic, It would also hurt Rinoa. GFs (had 6, I think) did the same.
    So, the game ended in one of two ways:
    * I got killed
    * Rinoa died
    Then I realized I was not getting passed her, and if by some miracle I did, how was I going to deal with what was waiting for me later?
    I did the hardest thing I could do, so as to not get tempted to go back to that save file - I deleted it and started a new game.
    Things got way better in the second playthrough. I had wisened up. Each playthrough became easier and easier, especially after discovering GameFaqs - YES, I had limited internet at the time. Downloaded the whole FFVIII guide. Good days

    Add to the 'phone a mate' call the system helpline. At college, my friends and I used my roomate's phone so often to call the Nintendo Helpline, we had to pay his phone bill most of the year. We called about everything from getting to the minus world on Super Mario Bros. to finding out how to take down some difficult bosses.

    I had a personal rule back in the day of complete typed out walkthroughs that were 50+ pages long (I'm a sucker for RPGs and JROGs): If I was stuck on something and I'd exhausted every other option, and I couldn't progress further, I refused to look for cheats for a YEAR AT LEAST in order to try and figure it out myself. I'm the youngest of 4 so asking my older brothers for help felt like a defeat. And for FFX-2, I did just that. I wanted to complete it 100% and wouldn't have been able to without the strategy guide. But I refused (and got the so-so ending) until a year had passed.

    FF 8 had an evil learning curve. If you didn't upgrade your weapons, you could not beat the game. Something you don't find out until about 3/4 through the game.

      Lmao, I remember rage quitting the first time, restarting, then my brother telling me I'd have to get materials to upgrade. Those were the days.

      Don't forget if you decide to build up favorite characters and the level progression with the other monsters followed suit. Also I hold a eternal rage that would have Doomguy to tell me to chill against those damn Couerls..... I was never livid against a monster than against those smug furballs.

    7 Ways We Used To Beat Games Before The Internet
    Grind Grind Grind and git gud, that's how I did it back then.
    Also wtf is up with youtube of late? My posts get quadrupple posted instead, so I always need to delete 3 of them, and every white space I leave is multiplied too, WTF?!

    I remember when Sierra entertainment (Ah, the memories. King's quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, Leisure suit Larry) had a hint phone hotline. You'd get an automatic answering machine, and you had to navigate through a tree of questions about which game you were seeking help with, which part of the game, and eventually you'd end up with the solution to your specific problem. For me living in Europe in the 80s and 90s, dialing a US telephone service whenever I got stuck couldn't have been cheap for my parents.

    back before internet i used to have physical friends and we used to draw maps and write down some waypoints to each other on breaks while in school. and when you where at your friends place you helped them and vice versa. i remember getting to the water temple in zelda ocarina of time for the first time, took me days to complete it (1-2 hours per day) then shadow temple came... took even longer

    I recall my dad raging at the itemised phone bill when it turned out every day for 3 months I’d spoken to my mate for at least an hour about our progress on Final Fantasy 8 for that day and tips for bosses etc

    I remember going back to grade 5, I was getting both Final Fantasy 7 and 8 for my birthday, something that I found out about because my parents forgot to hide the games and left it on their bed for a while after the purchase. I then found that my brother had purchased one of the gaming magazines that came with a guidebook for 20-30 games which included the worlds most basic guide to FF7 but had information to getting the huge materia, as well as tips to breed the best chocobo in the game. I think I read through that guide more than a dozen times before I ended up opening the game on my birthday. The sad part though, being a pre-owned game and me being a kid who didn't understand the value of an unscratched disc, by the time I reached the space section my disc was badly damaged and would freeze during the cutscene where you go into space. It wasn't until last year (16 years after I first got the game) that I went back and finished it's re-release on the PS4. Now I thankfully have the platinum to remind me that yes, I did actually finish the game.
