    Because of your video, I bought a MacPro 5.1 2012 2x2.4 Ghz, 24 Gb ram, 240 Gb SSD, 500 HDD, 640 Gb HDD, ATI Radeon HD 5770 1Gb, for 2000 DDK(about $183). I have installed a USB3 PCI and Asus 4xNVME with a 512 Gb NVme M2 card. On another 256 Gb SSD with Win 10 Pro. I have bought a RX 590 8gb in original box, for 850 DDK (approx. $125).

    You might be interested to know I’ve found the WD Black HDD is the best spinner I’ve ever used. I go through dozens of HDDs in my biz so I’ve experimented a bit. I currently have 8 WD Black 1TB drives in rack mount bays between 8 and 15 years old. Not one of them has ever faltered. During a 2 year period producing music for a hit TV show, they were seeing typical use of 1TB per day, 7days a week. Still, performing and measuring as flawless as the day I bought them. During that same time span, quite a few high spec HDDs of every manufacturer have shown signs of performance loss and been tossed. Despite the fact they did all the heavy lifting, I have still never seen a WD Black fail.

    The 5,1 is an outstanding example of Apple’s best. If not for the PCIe 2.0 bottleneck, it would be good for virtually all applications. It moves a lot of data very efficiently and as we are all seeing is super reliable. I updated mine with 6 core 3.46GHz Xeon processors and higher speed RAM to match. The improvement was phenomenal and one unexpected plus was lower power consumption hence quieter operation. Though I’ve moved on to 6,1 for better portability, I’ll keep my HackPro forever as a symbolic middle finger to Apple.

    The NVME drive uses 4 lanes of PCI-E, so with only one drive in your ASUS drive adapter, plugging it into a x4 PCI-E port won't make a difference compared to x16. If you were to plug four drives into the ASUS adapter, you would need to plug it into a x16 PCI-E port to connect all the drives.

      I am not sure the ASUS card works, with one installed in mine, like he did in the video, everything works fine, but as soon as I added more to fill the other three slots, now none of them are recognized.

    • @triXsolarflare
      @triXsolarflare Год назад +2

      I have this ASUS card in the slot above the video card, I put the single slot original video card back in so I could squeeze that card in, that is the x16 slot correct? and it still only sees the one NVME. Maybe this ASUS card does not support non-bifurcation boards? The ASUS card is pretty cheap and cannot find any of the cheaper cards that specifically state that they support non-bifurcation motherboards.

    Hello, I have a problem with OpenCore Legacy patcher and the sonnet 4x4. I have a 5.1 with monterey on it. rx580 8gb. Without the PCIe card it works just fine, no problems whatsoever. If I plug in the PCIe card with the nvmes the card blocks the booting process of the OS. I have tried to reset the NVRam holding the keys combination, waiting for 4 chines to happen, switch off the mac, plugging in the PCIe card but it still blocks the booting process. Any suggestions? Thank you

    I use those small SSDs as my opencore installer drives - they are MUCH faster than using USB. As others have pointed out the PCI card won't do more than 4 lanes unless you sacrifice the 16X video card slot - I just got a cheap 4X PCI host card for my NvME drive Orico NVME M.2 expansion card - Samsung 870 drive I'm getting 1300 in slot 3

    Just to add to the interesting comments....the ASUS NVME card only supports a single NVME ! This is because it needs bifurcation support to divide the X16 lanes into 4X4 lanes one 4 lane for each NVME. 5,1 does not support bifurcation. Hence they are cheap cards . Hope that can be in a next video? Just a X4 PCIE NVME should support over the speed your seeing.

    Would I get quicker speeds if I used a nvme to usb3.0 caddy instead of using the pcie slots

While I want to download, for example, an update of some program, for example Firefox, some file or something else, the process stops. What could be wrong? my connection is optical and the relevant check has been done by OTE and everything was fine since the pages on the internet open very quickly. It is not recognized in PCI. Disks are not recognized in Storage. Disks are not recognized in Disk Utilty. When I connect the discs with an external box they are recognized. If possible leave the original GPU slotted in but not powered, u can get the loading screen back and any mitigate any dual screen issues.
