I got a couple of Mac Mini's that were being sent to the dump. Swapping out the hard drive for an SSD was a little tricky since there are two mounting pins for the drive deep inside the chassis. If you wiggle in the new drive in about half way, then lift up the drive to a flat position with a loop of tape or a suction cup, you can align the drive to fit into the mounting pins. One of the machines I pushed from High Sierra to Sonoma with Open Core Legacy Patcher. They're cool little machines and run Linux flawlessly.

Hey, thanks for the advice! I don’t think thermals are the issue, I’ve ran it for hours on end, including graphically intensive stuff (games too), no issues what so ever. But changing the thermal paste is definitely something to do, perhaps when I upgrade the ram.

Good find. Usually when you deal with the SSD/HD you also remove the fan and the little black curve cover. I found it much easier to connect the silver shielding if you fold a piece of white printer paper in the long way to put behind the SSD and to have the MM in an upright position so you can position the 2 screws in the bottom to the case.This would push and align the SSD hole to the silver wi fi shield to lock with the screws.
Just watched your video on my mid 2011 mac mini, OCL Ventura. What a great buy! I purchased mine for over AU$100🙁. I like the small form factor, it's my daily driver for viewing content/ light work in LibreOffice as well as general office stuff. They are great little machines, it fits neatly under my monitor riser on my desk and if I need to do any heavy duty work I have a custom built gaming rig as well as test bench on my build desk🙃 Thank you for showcasing one of Apple's little gems,
Very nice find. Glad to see you got the one with the AMD GPU. Mine only has the Intel onboard graphics. By the way, you can put two hard drives into those things. You can get a kit that gives you the brackets and connectors. It is not too hard to pull the whole thing out of the case to install them.

Ive got 3 of those. 2x Mac Mini 2012 and a Mac Mini 2011 Server edition! Also just like the Mac Mini 2011 Server Editions have 2 sata cables you can also put 2 sata cables on your 2012 mac mini. Theres another port for it under the fan that if im right used to be for the DVD Drive. This could be useful if you dont have a Server Edition but want 2 disks in your Mac Mini. Also be aware. Some 2011 Mac Minis have a broken mini display port

Still have 2 Mac minis. A 2009 and 2011 version. The 2009 runs on El Capitan while the 2011 has Catalina installed on the primary ssd and windows10 on the secondary ssd. Yes you can install 2 ssd by using the i fix it cable😊
@@schvabek it’s not hard but you have to disassemble the whole computer. But there are excellent videos how you can do that. And if I can do that you can also. Just be patient

Excellent video. My 2011 Mac Mini lasted from new until 2024. For its final few years, I ran Linux on it, because I found the native macOS to be sluggish in comparison. Mind you, I used OCLP for a while; that worked really nicely, but it felt a bit slower in response than even plain, old High Sierra. I did get it up to macOS Monterey using OCLP before I simply stopped using it. Linux receives much more frequent security updates; sometimes, they put out several updates per week and occasionally more than one update in one day. Anyway, the two SSDs I had in it acted up for some reason, so I removed them. I stripped out the guts and stuffed in a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB just for fun. Have fun with YOUR Mac Mini!

@@schvabek Enjoy trying Linux! You will find that it takes less time and effort to install Linux on your Intel-based Mac Mini. My first Linux variant was Ubuntu-based ElementaryOS. It just LOOKS like macOS. After experimenting with DOZENS of different Linux distributions, I settled on Linux Mint. There's lots to learn...but if an old man in his 7th decade of life can do it, then so can you! Aloha!

The AMD GPU might be a nice bonus (it's not incredible, but it sure is better than the Intel iGPU), but that generation of Radeon had massive soldering and overheating problems, it's actually kinda impressive that this one is still working and I wonder if that's why you had to much problems with booting initially, I've seen them making the Mac just show a solid white screen or simply refusing to boot altogether. I would certainely try to repaste it if you want to actually use it, it's only a matter of time before it dies and it's a good idea to delay it as much as possible.

I did have a graphics card fail on me on the infamous 2012 MacBook Pro model, and I remember disabling it and running it on the integrated graphics. I’ll be repasting the CPU/GPU once my memory arrives! 🤟
modern macs are soldered down ewaste that cant be repaired, old macs will outlive them ngl, now if the internet recovery actually came up its likely it would direct you to install lion or snow leopard both of which has their servers taken down, which is what i faced trying to get mac os on my macbook pro 2011 recently, just settled for linux mint

intel mac minis are very hit and miss from my experience i have a large collection of powerpc intel and arm macs (including multiple dtks!) and apart from one of my g4 towers that i fried the cpu card on while doing a cpu cache upgrade the only ones that have any sort of problems are the intel mac minis my 2012 mac mini sometimes works perfectly fine and other times just doesnt even start enough to use the boot menu and my 2018 has a failing gpu that only lets me reach desktop before it crashes and forces me to reboot but my g4 mini runs flawlessly despite its age and how much ive poked around the inside with a soldering iron
even my m1 mac mini that i upgraded the ram in still works perfectly fine and i have a terrible history with bga ram upgrades because of how sensitive ddr4 is i dont really get what went wrong with the intel ones

@@chey8625 don’t know about other channels, but I get my gear mostly from auctions and/or recyclers. This one came from aukcije (dot) hr, which is a local auction site in my country. Older computers and untested HW regularly sell for very cheap. I mostly get just one computer at a time. I’d love to buy in bulk, but I don’t have the space for it at this time. Hope this clears it up.
With 4 GB of RAM on this machine, it's best to stick Linux Mint in there instead of running outdated versions of OSX which by now are full of security issues. Linux Mint would be up to date, and it will let you run Steam. Mint loads at 1.3 GB of RAM (I'm assuming OSX needs about 2 GB, and Windows 3.5 GB). You will need to use ethernet during installation in order to install the non-free wifi driver afterwards.

@@schvabek I have a Macbook Air mid-2011 running Linux Mint. Mint is fast on it, so I use it as a normal computer. Anything expect video editing, since it only has 4 GB of ram. But if you upgrade to 16 GB, you will be able to do that too. It's a fully functional computer in that case, no old versions of OSX full of security issues.
The 2012 mac minis are best bank for your buck since they have legacy metal support. Still really awesome that you managed to get a 2011 for only $10!

Change the thermal paste on the CPU heatsink. Fans should slow right down, and the installation might have been a thermal issue that made it shut down

Certainly do not need to take the whole mini apart to remove or install or remove hard drive, seems you had there mounting hardware missing.

The terrible speakers and inability to put it to sleep and store away unplugged makes my old mini a let down compared to my old MBA.

funny how theres loads of channels like yours magically getting $10 devices when there way more in reality so clearly are bulk buying or wouldn't get it for that price 😂

@@chey8625 don’t know about other channels, but I get my gear mostly from auctions and/or recyclers. This one came from aukcije (dot) hr, which is a local auction site in my country. Older computers and untested HW regularly sell for very cheap. I mostly get just one computer at a time. I’d love to buy in bulk, but I don’t have the space for it at this time. Hope this clears it up.
With 4 GB of RAM on this machine, it's best to stick Linux Mint in there instead of running outdated versions of OSX which by now are full of security issues. Linux Mint would be up to date, and it will let you run Steam. Mint loads at 1.3 GB of RAM (I'm assuming OSX needs about 2 GB, and Windows 3.5 GB). You will need to use ethernet during installation in order to install the non-free wifi driver afterwards.
Hey, thanks so much for the advice! As I’ve said, I’ll be upgrading this thing to 16 GB of ram shortly, and while I’ll be experimenting with Linux in the future, I don’t really know what to use it for 🤷♂️
@@schvabek I have a Macbook Air mid-2011 running Linux Mint. Mint is fast on it, so I use it as a normal computer. Anything expect video editing, since it only has 4 GB of ram. But if you upgrade to 16 GB, you will be able to do that too. It's a fully functional computer in that case, no old versions of OSX full of security issues.
