- Originally known as Superman: The Escape, the ride was intended to open in 1996. However, due to a range of problems Superman: The Escape opened on March 15, 1997. At the end of July 4 weekend of 2010 Superman: The Escape ceased operations with no reason given. A sign posted in front of the ride indicated that it would reopen during the 2011 season, with hints indicating that there would be improvements made to the ride experience. A Los Angeles Times report on August 3, 2010, announced the plans for Superman: The Escape to undergo a major refurbishment before the 2011 season. After Superman: The Escape's sister ride, the Tower of Terror II at Dreamworld, underwent a major refurbishment in 2010 which entailed a new vehicle which launches backwards, speculation turned to the possibility of a similar modification to the Magic Mountain ride.

Actually, the Tower of Terror in Australia was the first ride to break to 100mph mark. This ride had a delayed opening, so yeah.

This was the first, it opened briefly for a few weeks then the launch needed a new system because it started only going a quarter up the tower rather than 3 quarters.
The Antigravities Clan W101 but it did it go 100 miles an hour no it didnt, the tower of terror actually beat before this ride did

This coaster has always been overrated in my opinion. I remember being terrified as a kid in line for my first ride on this. And that was the most intense part. I remember getting off it and thinking "that's it?". Even now with it launching backwards (which is a dramatic improvement), it still leaves something to be desired.
Having gone to Magic Mountain for over 20 years, I thought this coaster was overrated. Back when it was the "hottest" coaster in America ( right before CP dropped Millennium Force and Top Thrill Dragster), I was underwhelmed by this ride, thinking it was the definition of "gimmicky" and "One trick pony". Nowadays, nobody gives a shit about this coaster, so it's ironically become underrated as a result.

Im pretty sure tower of terror ii was the first roller-coaster to reach the 100 mile barrier a month earlier then this ride making it was the worlds first fastest and tallest roller coasters in the world.
TOT didn't reach 100, it topped out at 97 or 98. Look it up.

The "Holy Grail" of thrill rides?? Man, some people are easily impressed, I guess. The ride never actually reached a legitimate 100mph until recently, when they decided to run the cars backwards to compensate for an otherwise boring experience.
I mean, this program out in 2002. It was still pretty new and groundbreaking at the time. Of course in retrospect, it's nothing special, and probably the weakest of the 100+ MPH coasters. But at the time, this was a pretty revolutionary ride.
It's so much better now in 2012
