Eddie Lanser My brothers are both firefighters and EMTs. I'm only thirteen but next year I am joining the explorer post at their fire department. I quite often check back on your comment. It has stuck with me since the first time I read it and inspired me to become the best firefighter I can be. Thank you to you and all of my future brothers and sisters.

equestrian gal I'll give you one little tip, from firefighter to explorer, listen to what they tell you. Brothers and sisters in this line of work would never steer you wrong. We are all family, yeah there maybe a little rough play, and some banter, but it comes with being family. We have each other's backs when the tones drop, and we get called to duty. Listen, learn, and forget what anyone says negative about the job. It's a great thing to do, and it looks good on a resume, as it's community service, and most employers do look for community service. The moment they skim through, and see your a local health care provider (first aid, cpr AED trained) and first responder, they will be highly interested. There's a lot of benefits to this line. The most important thing, don't ever get discouraged. If you can't remember where something is on a rig or can't remember how something works, don't hesitate to ask, the will show you where it is, or how it works. Firefighters never stop Learning, as our job changes everyday. New construction, newer types of cars, new equipment, new guidelines etc. Always ask, listen, and learn when doing it. Good luck, and hope to see you on the flip side when you become one of us.

My grandfather was a firefighter, my dad a cop. I spent 8 yrs on the line before being paralyzed. I never had trouble on the line but after 6 yrs off the line the stuff I saw, smelt and heard haunts my every waking and sleeping moment. My dad didn't want me to do it, I wish he would have explained why. For you juniors please realize not everyone dies in the line of duty. This job can be utterly life changing in ways you can never understand. I miss my career but I'm not sure I would push my child into it and would support them but struggle with it.

Hey bro, if you see this let me know. Currently 5 years as a firefighter and the best thing anyone can do is have a good support network. It's been a long time since you put this post up, and I hope you see if. if you do, please sing out. I am personally over all the 'mental health programs' and besides being a Volunteer firefighter, Mental Health is my main job. If you ever need someone to talk to, sing out to those who have had similar experiences and able to relate. Seen my fair share of fatal's (for various reasons) and none of it is your fault. Being hurt, isn't your fault. You didn't wake up one day and think, you know what "i want to get hurt today".
Please look after yourself and your family. I hope you are doing OK. If not, that's OK as well. Sing out to someone though if you're not!

Bless all the men and women in law enforcement who have to deal with the worst of humanity and still find time to care for a stray dog, a scared child, and the little things that make life life. Pray for our EMT's and Paramedics who work fearlessly to save a life no matter the color of the skin, you wealth or lack of it, your faith or your lifestyle. And last, but certainly not the least of these please pray for a men and women in the armed forces of our nation and thank them every time you lay you head down to sleep.

Love how so many people think all we do is "sit around" or waste time on "training" maybe we are taking a break after a 16 hr long fire. That you missed, but all you see is is "sitting" maybe you see us cutting a car and say jeesh they are training again! We do it so we are efficient at it. Because if it was traumatic enough with in an hr or less you maybe dead. So we have to get you out at break neck pace, while not injuring ourselves. If you want to disrespect me and my family of fire fighters I challenge you to go to JUST ONE structure fire and see how "easy" it is.

It is normal for normal people with no firefighter background that they think firefighter are only sitting in their house and doing nothing.
In every department, they have to train a lot, have to repair the trucks and equipment, and should clean all trucks after an emergency. The short time during emercency calls where firefighters are doing their job which they have trained there are mostly about 10 people wathing them.
In our city a lot of people think we are doing nothing all day long. They can't see the work behind the doors.

***** When someone calls our station to tell us their cat is stuck in a tree, we are supposed to ask them, "Have you ever seen a cat skeleton in a tree?" They of course say "no" and we say, "that's because the cats will eventually always come down on their own. Just give it time." Some other departments may actually rescue cats, but not us :)

***** Thanks for answering! I always wondered that, because I've seen fire departments rescuing horses and such that got stuck in like an icy river, and people always relate firemen to cats in a tree for some reason LOL.

my father was a firemen for 23ish years but passed away from cancer last year and i keep thinking over and over all the firefighting related memories i have with my dad like him bring me to open house when i was really young when we use to live on long island and after we moved to maine helping around the station for open house when i was like 13 and listening to all his story's then when i was a junior at 17 in 2021 he was with me on my first few fire calls and since he's passed i really want to do this full time i just got my basic emt and basic fire so we're getting there i hope my dad would be proud of me. idk i felt like rambling on a comment that was made when i was 9 years old but yeah.... i miss him rip my dad (1976-2022)

@@LilDucker You would have NO IDEA, how proud he would be. I got two girls and whenever they see fire on the TV the pretend to hold a branch and go 'swooosh'. Makes me tear up right now just typing this. They are 5 and 2, both girls. I've already heard them say 'only boys can do it' or 'i not a boy'... I just give them a hug and tell them they need to grow up big and strong, and do the same thing as the boys.
Your dad would be PROUD as HELL that you even went and got those qualifications. Best of luck getting a job in the field champ! From one firefighter who is a parent.... It's the actions of those that follow us that qualify us as parents, especially after we are gone. You have already let your actions speak louder than words and that is all he could have hoped for.
      Good luck mate :)

Have good friends, family and a good work environment and you'll be alright!

I remember just two years ago during Covid time 2020, my parents asked me what I wanted to be and I told them I wanted to become a firefighter, my dad said “That’s a good one buddy, Why don’t u join one of the local volunteer departments near us and learn as u go” I just joined last January and I passed my test to ride hydrant just yesterday after months of preparing and my brothers supporting me every step of the way, I’m ready to move forward with bigger obstacles ahead, I’m ready to have the water ready to flow at calls and start firefighting for real now, I’m ready to serve my country now and my city too and it’s people, I will do my really best to make my hometown proud, my country proud and my brothers and sisters at the station proud, and of course I will also serve at the best of my ability in honor of all of my 343 brothers and sisters who were killed in the line of duty on the morning of September 11, 2001 and everyone else obviously who came before me and laid down their life so a civilian gets a chance to live🙏🇺🇸

I am 23 and have been a firefighter/EMT since I was 19. I love what I do and would not trade it for any other job out there!
