Hi Wayne im from Puerto Rico but i live on philadelphia Pa and honestly i like your videos because i recently get a boat like a gift for my wife and until today is a nigthmare because i have jetskys and i am a racing mechanic but not a marine engine mechanic, thanks to you i lean a lot because your videos and i am avilable to fix my boat so god bless you Wayne!!!
Thanks for your video, I think my problem exactly like you, when I bought a boat , the owner didnot tell me the problem. I will learn this video and look forward to fix the problem....Thank you so much!
Fantastic thanks Wayne, you just saved me coming into the berth with one engine, the other one got stuck up so I just reversed polarity to get it to go down using your Hotwire method😊
I just found out that my trim works okay. After hot wiring it, from wayne's instructions, i did raise the outdrive that way, 3 weeks ago. I didn't know whether to use the buttons on the throttle or the up/down switches on the dash. Now I need to learn about the trim tabs.
Love the honesty. FYI there is a relief valve on all outboards (and I am asuming outboard/inboard) that allows you to manually lift or lower the lower engine. It is a screw that you use a straight slot screwdriver to turn. Turning it Counter clockwise relieses the valve so the hydrolic oil can move freely. Then you will be able to lift up on the motor until you can put the kickstand down. If the motor is stuck in the upright posistion then it will allow you to lower it. If you are in a fix this comes in handy
I just found out that my trim works okay. After hot wiring it, from wayne's instructions, i did raise the outdrive that way. I found that trim does work as long as the key is in the accessories position, using the buttons on the throttle handle. I just bought the boat.
That looks like a dual prop !!! That can save you a lot on fuel. When you get your tilt trim working you can trim for performance and for shallow water running too! CHEERS again from Vancouver Island!
Don’t feel to bad about not knowing boat mechanic’s. Especially with a new to you boat. My tilt trim failed on me all the way down in the middle of Lake Michigan. My work around was to swap the hydraulic lines. Down worked but not up. Boats are a never ending learning experience. Hope you got it fixed.
Thank you. I'm in this situation but the boat is still in the storage lot with the outdrive down, and it's snowing. Fortunately i wasn't ready to tow quite yet, but was hoping to.
I have a mercruiser alpha drive. Always have had grounding issues. Got stuck down then up. I made an alligator clip jumper out of 12g wire and ran it from the grounding location for the pump straight to battery negative and it runs just fine. A wise mechanic told me to check power and grounds first
Dear Wayne, after watching your video I agree with you that the outboard motor is the way to go. I will be purchasing an outboard boat and will subscribe to you friend Dungar Marine. Thank you Gil
Thanks,, I like when you showing this video,, many dudes out there same me,, want to fix problems by their self 👍 save money and Also Feeling prowd and good after the work is done 😁. Go on with your videos. I thank you by all your tips!!!
Fantastic, thanks! I did this today on my Mercruiser Aplpha 1 Gen 2 and although the plugs etc are different the concept worked perfectly! I also added a switch near my throttle so now I can raise it by toggling the switch. I wired it directly to the battery etc. The reason I did this is that my SeaRay 180 bow rider is 21 years onld, probably worth about $6K retail. There is not way I can justify spending $100's on the new parts and a technician to do the work. The total cost of the job was switch $9, wire $9, other small things $3 although it took me about 2 hours (free). So about $21...
That was a very good video. I am not much of mechanic and I have the same engine in my boat. I noticed red fluid leaking from the rear of the engine compartment. I was told could be hydraulic fluid. My boat did not come with a owners manual I bought it used. Looks like its coming from a plastic box in the back .
Thank you!! Your power steering might also be red. It can be real tricky finding out exactly what and where is leaking! Sometimes if you hold your phone behind the engine and shoot video or take pictures you can get a better look at problems and leaks. Good luck!!
Try to check the easy stuff first - fuse, circuit breakers (and relays like I do here) and then the switch. But if you hot-wire your motor directly to a 12 volt power source and nothing happens, it's something in the motor. Good luck!!
Hey Wayne I had a similar problem, except the trim motor worked and then it wouldn't. Played around with wires and got it working. I noticed a lot of corrosion on the leads to the trim motor. Cleaned them off and it seems to be working. However to be safe I'm going to pull the relays and clean them and order new ones they are cheap. I noticed the up/down relays are held into their receiver with zip ties. Given the bouncing around they might be loose. A lot of electrical corrosion on these old I/Os. Fooling around with a faulty starter relay too. But thats for another day
Yeah! I needed to clean all the contact points again this year and used a lot of dielectric grease to try to help. A month later and it’s acting up again because of poor contacts.
Don't never buy a boat if you don't know what to look for. Maybe 1% or 2% at the most a boat owners when they selling the boat will be honest about all the problems do your research go online . Good luck. Boat stands for break out another thousand believe it the main thing is to have patience and you will persist

I just had a similar issue last night. Turns out the power to my hydraulic pump separated from the connector so it wasn’t getting any electricity. I’m guessing the connector end eroded away and the wire became disconnected, where all my accessories were also place on the engine block off of my battery cable. 97 Four Winns Horizon QX.
Hey Wayne. I just saw your site and am impressed with how many issues you’ve addressed. I have a question not related to the current video. I hope you’ll see it and give it some thought. I have 140 hp Suzuki outboard. For the last number of months occasionally it will stall out at speed. The fix four out of the five times has been to squeeze the gas bulb near the tank to give it more gas. The bulb is always soft. I then put in neutral and it restarts. The other time that didn’t work, and we were stranded out in the lake. I took it into the local marina guy. He looked at many many different things, including fuel pump, etc. etc. filters etc. and he said he couldn’t find any issues or anything wrong with it and just to try it again and keep my fingers crossed. We’ll, it happen again today. we did the squeezing of the bulb thing and it worked after I restarted. Is this a common issue with Suzukis and if so, do you know any Reason this is happening and any fix that will be a little bit more permanent? I’d really appreciate hearing back from you. Thanks very much Wayne.
Pro tip, have cash, shop for your boat in the winter on the coldest, worst days of the year just after Christmas when people need the money and no one is shopping for boats. Thanks for sharing. My Suzuki DF115A is not trimming up or down after a re-wiring / add-a battery ACR project, looking for clues....
My first inboard, they said, just put the exhaust manifold back on it’ll run exhaust manifold was cracked. Three engines later the boat finally runs right did it all myself had no idea how to do it thought this is a great learning experience and if anybody tries to give you the old man garage wall? It’s a boat motor. It’s different than a car motor. They’re out of their mind it’s the same thing Same thing started mine 10 years ago and I love my boat now last engine was put in five years ago got that many hours on the boat that I keep burning up engines.
thank you! an old timer told me the jist but now seeing this I'm about to go to the dock to actually accomplish the hot wire testing to see if it's the relay. Had to see it first to feel cconfident though, so THANK YOU!
I would check the switch to see if it's working when switching up (can you hear a click atr the relay?) and you can swap out the relays or switch the wiring at the trim motor. But there could also be a separate issue.
Take one side of the rams off you can pull drive up and green wire means go so down and blue is up .....hit the wire with 12v you can get them to work ....cheaper then replacing skeg
Hi Wayne, I love this video. Thanks for posting it..! I have the exact same tilt-trim motor with a stern-drive stuck in the down position. I'll be giving this a try and re-posting. QUESTION: Can you do something similar to lower the drive ?
@@WayneTheBoatGuy This worked like a charm Wayne.! By reversing the - positive and negative - contact points from the battery to the trim motor, I was able to raise and then lower the outdrive. Great video, thanks again for taking the time to post it AND respond to comments.
It looks like the previous owner anti-fouled the outdrive with the paint that he used on the hull.Somewhere in the back of my mind I think that is a mistake. Not 100% sure on that one but check into it. Another plus on inboard is you can run a bus style heater off the cooling system. Possibly more desirable in my climate than yours. When you get tilt trim working run it up and down often even in storage.
Yeah it is painted. I asked a few buddies about the outdrive being painted and they said it's pretty common around here when people pay to have it done. I am not a fan and it didn't seem to help keep barnacle growth from forming on the outdrive either!
What was the final fix? I have the same issue - Trim Switch up/down just makes a click in the engine area. I appreciate your video as I wasn't sure about the Trim Motor itself either. (Typical) Location, Electric, Hydraulic.
The last fix I did to this was to replace the relays with new ones and used a lot of electric connection cleaner spray and then a little touch of dielectric grease. That seemed to sort everything out.
Well I just got finished troubleshooting mine. Found the pump. I used to think it was a dedicated pump for one of the engine hatch lifts. I tried to just pull the relays off. No go! I reseated the power plug and tapped and kicked it a little. WA-LA! It started working! I'm guessing a stuck motor? I may post a pic shortly. I do appreciate all your videos as guidance. Love your simplistic approach and humor too!
@@WayneTheBoatGuy I forgot to ask you if the polarity of the "hot" wires from the battery made the outdrive go up and/or down? Seems like you just hooked them up and the outdrive just started going up. What makes it go back down? Flipping the wires around? Thanks Wayne!
Check your wires going through the transom to the trim indicators on each side of the outdrive. I don't know why it's a stupid design but the wires look like a damn lamp cord. They will get pinched and the insulation will get brittle and fall off will short it out and will nothing work up or down
You could have just unbolted the Rams from the outdrive and pulled it up with ratchet straps. As long as the Rams are hooked up you will not get the outdrive up. Good luck you know what boat stands for. Boat, break out another thousand haha patience my son patience
At the time, with the few people I had around to help and advise me, nobody could give me an answer as to whether removing the rams was an option. I was concerned I might get myself in a world of trouble before my boat was off the street!
Was waiting for the kickstand to fail while your head was inside the compartment… with your luck so far, I was expecting a bloody conclusion to this video! 🥹
on a used boat, the first and most important work is usually to rebuilt entirely the electrical system, unless it is a top quality boat, th e electric system is usually poorly built and is the first component to give trouble, for the inboard engine, it is usually the most reliable component as it is an adapted automotive engine whish have been sorted by use in many applications.
Hi I appreciate your help in your videos I tried direct cross to my motor and it does nothing my tilt trim looks exactly like yours have you got any advice about changing the motor out my boat is in the water at the marina outdrive is down does it need to come out of the water?
I had the same problem this year. What we did was lower the front of the trailer so that the outdrive didn’t drag coming out. We used an adjustable hitch in the lowest position. Good luck!
just replaced the entire unit and it still doesn’t work. I don’t know what else to do! Switch is good, relays are working, motor is new, sending switch is working. The unit the relays are plugged into works. What else can there be???
I think I found it on The Hull Truth forum - I was doing several different searches when I found it and immediately hit "print" so I would have something to work from!
Ok all he had to do was take the rod that runs through both hydraulic pistons as well as the outdrive. One nut loosened and the rod slips out, then you can tie the outdrive in the raised position with a come along strap or even good rope.
Boat owners can be very sketchy because they know it is a lot of cash and unfortunately a lot of first time boat buyers make the same mistake as you so do not fault yourself. I made a few when I bought mine
I hope others can learn from my mistakes and also what might be involved to tackle some tasks! Sometimes it's so simple and other times it's a handfull LOL
Wayne, where did you get the wiring diagram from? I really need an Owner's Manual for a 2002 Stingray Boats 240CR. So far I have been unable to find one. Even Stingray doesn't have them back that far.
Hello Wayne, I am suddenly having a similar issue with my boat and I think you may be able to help. I started de-winterizing my boat this past week and my tilt trim switch was working at the beginning of the de-winterizing process. I stored the boat with the out drive trimmed all the way down during the winter and this week I was able to trim it all the way up using the switch so I could swap out my impeller and drain all the gear oil. Yesterday after getting the lower stern drive back together I attempted to lower the outdrive all the way down so I could reservice the gear oil and the switch just made a clicking sound and the outdrive is stuck in the full up position. I suspect a bad relay or solenoid but for the time being I would like to figure out how to at least lower the trim all the way down so I can reservice the gear oil and get the motor running. Is there a way to jump the trim motor to get the out drive to lower? How do I troubleshoot the relays and the solenoids? I am hoping you or someone else can help me out here. My boat is a Mercruiser with an Alpha 1 Bravo 2 out drive but the tilt trim looks the same as yours.
If your setup is similar to mine - the problem might be the relays. I have another video showing how I bypassed the relay that might help you! ruclips.net/video/PHovzON-Ccw/видео.html
@@WayneTheBoatGuy Thank you Wayne for the tip. I was finally able to go out and do some trouble shooting today and as it turns out my system is different than yours. Mine has two separate solenoids, one for trimming up and one for down. I was able to verify that my actuator was working by bypassing the solenoids so I determined the solenoids were bad and replaced them and now the system is working as advertised. I appreciate your help and response.
Well, if it never worked, and he was not smart enough to understand it and trim that he was being honest towards me, I mean, you don’t know how intelligent the guy you bought it from was so that’s not a fair statement
At the time, removing and replacing the relays did the trick. But I have still been having periodic issues over the last year. It seems that some of my electrical connections are failing.
@@WayneTheBoatGuy ah I see. My boat is a 79’ and doesn’t seem to have any relays. I’m going to try hot wiring today. If the motor works is there anything else I could try to fix it?
@@WayneTheBoatGuy God bless you for this video! I already went crazy with it... Could you please tell me which relays you replaced? My trim motor works so I think I also have a problem with relays... Never thought before that I will spend my time repairing my boat's trimmer with my manicured nails ))) but this time came... So please, help, you are my best hope at the moment as I have nobody else who can fix it for me )))
If you aren't getting a click or anything, it could be the motor itself. But check for a fuse or any other interruption along the way. Sometimes these things will work one direction and not the other, or the wire connections might not be good.
@@WayneTheBoatGuy thanks 🙏 after checking and checking the problem was the solenoid that went bad and also the trim motor wasn’t working because of the battery was too low 🙏
I can't image working in that space with a boat that has been on the water it's whole life. The electrical is going to be a nightmare. I would do evey maintenance item regardless of what the previous owner said. He most likely didn't do anything because he couldn't do it himself or/and or was a cheap ass. I'm lucky enough to own a boat with 30" on either side of the engine because it has a sundeck and no walk through. I set up an emergency tilt trim switch using the hot wire method, a 15' 12awg extension cord and a 20amp momentary spdt switch. Comes in handy for maintenance so my old ass doesn't have climb up and down playing with the throttle trim switch.
They aren't too hard to do - if you can easily get to it. But usually the problems with these seem to be electrical (fuses, bad ground, relays, switches, etc.) try to check all of those as best you can before buying a new motor.
We replaced our motor on an 88 sea ray. The hardest part was the switch not working on the throttle. Had to make a new place for a new switch Bit the new motor was an easy install. There are lots of youtube videos ok how to do it.
Would be helpful to indicate at what timeframe you actually start doing what the title says. We look for help. Not looking for a casual conversation. Just want to get to the issues. Overall, thanks.
Yea that sucks the guy lied! I wouldn't lie to people who live near me for sure... I think you can still go ahead and trust people, you just need some better questions to sort out the assholes. Maybe not even about boats but some like FBI questions :)
Your repeting 1/4 way threw so far. Yur dummy 5 times.?? 😮 saws all would have made getting to pump faster. Over half way into video. N no info yet.! 😮should have taped a broom 🧹 to drive. Then you would see stick come up. Knowing it lifted. Lol . Mabey next time😮
Ok.. It’s actually way way way way easier to work on.. so much easier that a outbound.. It’s a car engine basically… Honestly you shouldn’t own a boat.. Without u tube you would be in trouble looks like
If im getting this right , you put a neg and a pos to the two wires coming out of the motor. If im correct does going up and down depend on which way you put the two wires to the motor..

I forgot to ask you if the polarity of the "hot" wires from the battery made the outdrive go up and/or down? Seems like you just hooked them up and the outdrive just started going up. What makes it go back down? Flipping the wires around? Thanks Wayne!
I have a 1992 5.7L duoprop as well. I may just need a battery jump though.
That would be ideal!
How's your hydraulic fluid level... It really do come up slow... Great video. Good job.
The level was ok - but the hoses were clearly not in good shape.
Check your wires going through the transom to the trim indicators on each side of the outdrive. I don't know why it's a stupid design but the wires look like a damn lamp cord. They will get pinched and the insulation will get brittle and fall off will short it out and will nothing work up or down
Good things to check! My problem ended up being just corroded connectors on the relay.
So if you reverse the wires in the terminal would the stern drive go down? How did you know the correct way to get it to go up?
I think I just touched the wires to the tilt-trim motor plug which has two wires, and then just switched them around.
That is a very nice boat
Thank you!!
I usually have two in place - because I expect it too!
Good job! Thanks.
Cron.
on a used boat, the first and most important work is usually to rebuilt entirely the electrical system, unless it is a top quality boat, th e electric system is usually poorly built and is the first component to give trouble, for the inboard engine, it is usually the most reliable component as it is an adapted automotive engine whish have been sorted by use in many applications.
That's a good point since there seem to be quite a few electrical connections that are no longer looking clean!
Thanks for the feedback!!
How would you get the trim to go down using this method? just reverse the wires?
Yes!
Good job, God bless.
Thanks, you too!
Good luck!
So those wires just came straight from the battery? I'm having a relay issue, and we just need to send the tilt all the way up.
yes I ran them straight from the battery.
@@WayneTheBoatGuy thank you!!

just replaced the entire unit and it still doesn’t work. I don’t know what else to do! Switch is good, relays are working, motor is new, sending switch is working. The unit the relays are plugged into works. What else can there be???
How about a fuse or circuit breaker on the circuit?
You could've Just disconnected the trim hydraulics from The outdrive To make it where you would be able to lift the outdrive.
Can you give us the link for that wiring diagram you were using? I have the same set up (and issue). Looks like a big help.
I think I found it on The Hull Truth forum - I was doing several different searches when I found it and immediately hit "print" so I would have something to work from!
Where did you find that schematic , thanks
Ok all he had to do was take the rod that runs through both hydraulic pistons as well as the outdrive. One nut loosened and the rod slips out, then you can tie the outdrive in the raised position with a come along strap or even good rope.
Buy a collapsible party tent while working in the rain
Boat owners can be very sketchy because they know it is a lot of cash and unfortunately a lot of first time boat buyers make the same mistake as you so do not fault yourself. I made a few when I bought mine
I hope others can learn from my mistakes and also what might be involved to tackle some tasks! Sometimes it's so simple and other times it's a handfull LOL
Wayne, where did you get the wiring diagram from? I really need an Owner's Manual for a 2002 Stingray Boats 240CR. So far I have been unable to find one. Even Stingray doesn't have them back that far.
I did a bunch of searches to find it. I have had lots of challenges finding info for my boat too!
Try ebay I found a manual for my 4 cylinder inboard 2007 there good luck 👍
My knees make that sound. lol

Were you the seller?
Hi I am having the exact same problem. What did you do to fix it?
So please, help, you are my best hope at the moment as I have nobody else who can fix it for me )))
15:05 victory!
Hey 👋 I just did this but it didn’t work what you think it should be ?
If you aren't getting a click or anything, it could be the motor itself. But check for a fuse or any other interruption along the way. Sometimes these things will work one direction and not the other, or the wire connections might not be good.
@@WayneTheBoatGuy thanks 🙏 after checking and checking the problem was the solenoid that went bad and also the trim motor wasn’t working because of the battery was too low 🙏
@@WayneTheBoatGuy thanks again 🙏
So what was the problem? Relay? Fuse?
Yeah I keep telling my wife this is our last I/O engine boat!
I think my motor is bad do you think it would be easy to just replace the motor
They aren't too hard to do - if you can easily get to it. But usually the problems with these seem to be electrical (fuses, bad ground, relays, switches, etc.) try to check all of those as best you can before buying a new motor.
@@WayneTheBoatGuy ok ill try that thanks
We replaced our motor on an 88 sea ray. The hardest part was the switch not working on the throttle. Had to make a new place for a new switch Bit the new motor was an easy install. There are lots of youtube videos ok how to do it.
You should have put a piece of wood under it two 2 by 4
Would be helpful to indicate at what timeframe you actually start doing what the title says. We look for help. Not looking for a casual conversation. Just want to get to the issues. Overall, thanks.
There are timestamps in the video description:
05:25 Bypass test of the tilt trim motor
it would be easyer to use a battery charger it clips on
Never buy a boat with out a mechanic even if you buying it from a dealer
Some have it ,some don't.
u r now boring me ... goobyyyyee
Can relate smh 🤦🏿
Without u tube you would be in trouble looks like
Guess what we used to do before RUclips….it is called reading and networking…looks to me like Wayne is doing a hellava job…
Less talking we dont need to hear your story
If im getting this right , you put a neg and a pos to the two wires coming out of the motor. If im correct does going up and down depend on which way you put the two wires to the motor..
Yeah - since it is a 12 volt motor that only has 2 wires coming off.
What was the fix for this. Im having this same problem. Just finished i stalling new engine and drive and noe this
all of the things you are talking about do matter .....it all depends on how much you paid....
Wasnt the first big mistake and the second big mistake the same mistake?
