  • Well I made this video forever ago and I just realized I never made it public. I hope my viewers watch this one, as it goes over some very easy steps to test your hydraulic lines.

Quick question, I was trying to lower the stern and forgot to remove the trim and tilt lock covers....so of course was going down....its working fine but can you damage anything if your lowering the stern for about 10 seconds of those locks were in place...seemed fine, but also surprised it didn't bend the hydraulic cylinders or damage the pump

Thank for the info , i release the hydraulic lines on the same exact unit how do you fill it. Is it the red plug in the image that you’re showing?

It's the red plug, whatever you do, don't over fill it. The unit will explode and I've seen it happen. Keep the reservoir level.

Hi Michael, you mention a video at 3:08 on how to properly fill the cylinders. Do you have a link to that video? Thanks!

How does this help me if I want to fix a problem with my tilt/trim and get to the lake tomorrow? But I do know how to effectively use straps to hold up an outdrive now. Oh wait I already knew that!!! If I were you I would take Diagnosis out of the title and just call it how to suspend your outdrive for a week with a couple of 1/4" fittings!

If you can still find the trim pump repair kit, use that link I sent you. I haven't checked if they started making the rebuild kits again, but just in case they still haven't--buy one of these instead: www.sterndrive.info/id445.html

What is the correct hydraulic fluid to put into that pump I have the same one can you please tell me thank you so much??!!

You can hold your outdrive up it doesn’t weigh that much you just grab it by the end and hold onto it and then take your ratchet strap off and you should be able to hold it and then let it go

Hi Michael, thanks for the info! Unfortunately all my fluid leaked out after I didn't have the correct nuts for the hydraulic lines. I have the stern drive all the way up and supported. Is there a specific method to add the hydraulic fluid(different tilt angle)? Or just add fluid through the red cap? Also, how to ensure no air in the lines? Thanks!

mike, how do you feel about swaping a 5.0 volvo/pent out of my 96' 4winns 238 vista for an outboard.
i got caught by the early freeze and the core plugs popped out!

Oh no! What did you end up doing? I'm not a fan of an outboard swap.
