Box volume and its relation to ‘depth’ of Bass.

- Box volume plays an integral role in the depth to the bass you hear. Smaller subs do not respond quicker or are more punchier than larger subs. It seems that way but not true.

Very informative. I was one of those who always believed the smaller the sub the more impactful. Keep teaching it's really helping.💯
Smaller the box the more punchy it is . Bigger usually means lower tuning 💪😎👌
MB what you are saying is so true!!! Cause my 15 was in a box that was really for a 12 and Bro I put that same 15 in your box....... Man my wife came outside and said turn that shit down!!! You is shaking the house!!! A huge difference in the depth of the bass. Speaker facing the back with the port up is the best. Straight up SQL. Thanks Man
What do you think about speaker up port back? I'm using a compact SUV.
I got a 2015 Chrysler 300S V6 in Granite Crystal. I'm gonna put either two 8's or four 8's in the trunk and see what I can make it do. I build my own boxes and do all my own installs too. We appreciate the honesty and the wealth of knowledge you are willing to share so that we can use it to help us build a system that we can be proud of. I salute you sir. MBE 💯
Great knowledge shared here, there more you share the more advanced we become. Thanks big bro.
You at 11k followers now! Congrats my brother 💯💪🏼🔊🎶🌪
Salute as usual big bro💯
Another great video!!
Excellent explanation
All facts again..great explanation...
I think what people are trying to explain or define is simply frequency response. I think this is also why ported subs are given that "slow" definition by those, not in the know. It's simple, lower frequencies ARE IN FACT SLOWER. Amplitude over time creates notes. The larger woofer moves more air and plays lower frequencies which are LARGER waves. The punch comes from the higher frequencies than I think most people realize. A kick drum has a frequency of 60 -90hz depending on size. That's where the punch (or kick) comes from. You do feel 20hz but it doesn't impact you like those higher frequencies. I bet if you were to lowpass the larger driver with the same source material they wouldn't say that the larger woofer or larger box sounds or feel less impactful.
Yes and no, listen to a 18"4th order horn like the ones they use for DJ or PA subs, those are loud and "punchy" because they have light cones and tuned in the 30s. Where as something like a sundown X8 with a heavier cone and geared for low tuning (even more with larger subs) will roll off on the higher bass. That's why they are called sub woofers. Not all boxes use the box to create bass if that makes sense.
@@subdynoman would still argue they are loud and punchy because they’re rolled off. 4th order is pretty dang steep. Also huge difference between 18hz (thinking of my ultimate um18-22 )and 30hz.
@@NakeanWickliff yes I will agree to that, I'm running 12s (destroyers) in a 12' horn blowthrough and it's both punchy and plays low.
It's all about perspective sometimes! Physics are facts indeed!!
Hello! Thank you very much for sharing your content, I have a doubt if you can solve it for me,
To generate higher SPL in order to compete, is a bigger or smaller box better? I know it will depend on the vehicle and its frequency, but there must be a difference between a larger or a smaller box in order to generate greater sound pressure.
Greetings!
so if i have a 6th order blowthrough and my low chamber is smaller than a recommended sealed enclosure but i have it tuned low with the ports (28 hertZ) will that not hit lows the same as a bigger box with shorter ports tuned also to 28 hertz?
thanks
I love 12" more than all i love and others 15 18 10 but the 8s have so sweet and fast bass
Most people ignore Vas because they want smaller inclosures but that's the volume you need if you want tuning at the woofers fs
Always been a bass head first time in trying to build and install a enclosure... Any suggestions on how to build a box for 15in L7 Solo any ideas on how big my box should be
I have a 5cf box for 4 8s. The box is made for flush mount. Which 8s would get me close to 5cf?
What you think about JL Audio?
Do you know when building a box when it calls for 0.7 cubic feet for a 10-in sub does it already calculate the displacement of the speaker? Or do I have to add that calculation?
I think smaller speakers are much more accurate. Bigger speakers can flex a lot more and they are slower since they are bigger and they have more air mass to move. I personally have ran 12-in subs and I find that 10-in subs are actually deeper and much more accurate. I will always run 10 8n a sealed box because of that. I like sealed because i dont like flabby bass from big speakers in ported boxes. Most of those huge speakers are meant for competition and sound pressure level and they're not as good as smaller ones for creating great sound. They are meant for just being really loud and they don't give the best sound quality. All those systems 145 db + are just for attention and showing off.
I heard a while back if you have two subs in a box you can get more output if they're not in separate chambers and are together. Is this true?
Im wondering why my 2 q class 8s in my 5th gen ram 1500 sound like they are falling off big time from 35hz to 45hz. Its like my subs arent even moving from 35hz to 45hz. Is it cuse i have them in pretty much there smallest recommend volume making it less musical?
How do you feel about polyfill? I always used polyfill when i built my boxes as i was taught it tricks the speakers cause it takes longer for the wave in the box to bounce back.
Polyfill is used to correct boxes that aren't the right volume for the sub which is the case with a lot of prefab boxes.
If the box is designed to the proper specs of the sub, you don't need polyfill.
I don't know about polyfill but I always take enclosure carpet and line the inside of the Box that really helps for me to dampen the sub
Poly-fil doesn't trick the speaker into anything. A lot of people say that but the speaker doesn't have any idea. Poly-fil works by slowing the sound waves, causing them to take longer to get across the box, which gives a similar effect to a larger net volume. You also need to put a lot in there for it to do anything at all. It needs to be stationary too, mostly. We're talking about half the box being filled. And not being blown out or interfering with the port.
So if we had a Box that that was too small for our subwoofer or the tuning frequency was too high , theoretically couldn't you use a 12" empty box and put a 10 " in it with a Mdf speaker ring adapter to achieve lower bass ??
It would take less power because it is in a 12 inch enclosure it would reach its mechanical limits very fast
I recently purchased a flat pack and assembled it incorrectly the slot port begins more narrow than it ends, how will this effect the sound and how can i tell where it is tuned at now?
You will be tuned lower and maybe have port noise.
What is hands down the best box for daily driving? Ported? 4th order? 6th order? Bandpass? Sealed? I wanna hit every note equally I'm tired of "finding" songs to listen to what do I need to do to have everything boom equally no peaks per say????
Sealed will have a flatter response, making it seem more balanced
The ending of the video killed me😂
How would a kicker rt 12" perform in a 2cube box in a challenger. I bought the down fire passive radiator box but now I want a little more boom
I went with the down fire too save space.
Why does my setup get louder when I let the passenger side window down
💯💯💯
Facts
I think that's my box you leaning on!!!!
It is bro
The last like 15 seconds of this video 🤣😁
What would be a good box volume for 2 Soundqubed HDS3.1 15's? Soundqubed does not list recommended box specs on their site:( With the space in my room lol, I can go all the way up to 9 cubes after all displacement:) I will tune it to 32hz but will 8.5 cubes be too big for them?
Nope that’s right around where u should be keep in mind most companies recommend smaller box volume then the subs actually require as a sales gimmick some manufacturers lie a Lil more others less few may be completely honest on a subs enclosure volume. So u could go to 10 cubes and still be doing them justice after that ur reaching the point of no return my HDC418 was exceptional in 9 cubic foot enclosure yes that sub requires more displacement but I’m saying this because all Soundqubed subs love larger enclosures. So u will be doing them justice and be able to run them on less power and have more efficiency…
@@djrockon5729 You and everyone else I asked said that should be good, so I'm going to proceed to build it. Thanks for the reply dude.
I know a guy who has 1 Memphis mojo 15 back from 2008 and a ma audio hk4400 in a 2000 Jimmy. The bass is so deep and loud and the box 4 qubes and the port is like 1 inches wide. It beat a truck with 4 15s. You could hear his bass from a few blocks with 1 15.
That would be tuned to like 80 hz 🤣🤣🤣
@@imfrom210texas lol the guy gave me the specs to the mojo it was 4.5 cubic feet and the port was 15.5 x 2.5 x 23 at 35hz. Man that thing hit every bass note deep and loud. All I can say is that bass was in a different league nothing average like most of the bass in people cars and trucks
Bass travels farther in a big box..in a small box the Bass is more responsive punchy
So what you saying is I can use 10 inch sub in a bigger cube for deeper bass
Yes, for example if a subwoofer manufacture recommends a 1 cubic foot ported enclosure (minimum), a 1.75 cubic foot ported enclosure (recommended) & a 2.5 cubic foot ported enclosure (maximum), then the largest enclosure size recommendation is the one that will always produce more bass output.
yes but u loose power handling
you trade efficiency for power handling, tho most manufacturers recomend way too small of a box as its better for marketing
I’d try telling people this but they “know more” then I do I guess even though I’m the one everyone goes to get a box made or system installed or to buy subs from cause they “know a guy that had....”. It’s all physics can argue physics but Macho guys try.
? Zo the bigger da box da better or naw
The funniest shit I heard :
Pull up to work one day, coworker hears me bumping my 2 8s…
“ damn bro what you got in there making all that noise I heard you from the back of the shop? 2 12s? 2 10s? “
Na bro 2 8s…
“ oh well no duh!!! 8s carry noise thru further distances !”
🤦🏻♂️ what?
😂
22 hz tuned box is too low i dint like it @ 27-31 is perfekt.
Never heard of the term Slower bass , unless thats the way the music was recorded.
I've only heard of low bass , and punchy bass .
Fast or slow is dictated by the song that's playing , not a way too describe Bass output . 😎👌
That's from 35 years of experience.
His designs and Kicker co-sign show he knows what he's talking about
Your assuming everyone uses ports. I only run sealed
I’m not assuming anything it doesn’t apply to you …. Ignore it. Not everyone has to do the same thing. And the channel is not just for you sir.
@@M.B.Enclosures totally didn't get my point but I understand. It's hard for me to get my point across in text. Have a nice day
Sealed in an appropriate good sized box should sound way cleaner and more accurate then a ported and play bass closer to what the producer intended the listener to hear.
8s all day... you play CRIS ADLER "lamb of god" drum solo on 8s and it will crush 15s everything equal 4 8s against 2 15s.......there's nothing like it....15s lag seems like no what you do, it's never a clean and accurate.......
I hear this a lot and hoping someone can help clarify, when building a box with a slot port, the port area is part of the overall box volume ? Correct or incorrect ? Example if the box is 2 cubic feet Teagarden of port length and with the box is still 2 cubes ?
I have a video on this because I made a big mistake for a long time. Box volume is calculated separate from the port. If the port took up 1 cube, and the rest of the box took 2 cubes, then the box is still a 2 cube box. You understand ?
@@greenbassboosts8872 yes thanks for your reply. I here so many folks out here including shops say it’s not or it is so wast sure what to believe. 👍🏽
